theres something about this song that i just find really saddening. sure it's half-novelty because of the goofiness of it. but these lyrics are very telling. everyone else has commented about how this guy is a loser and scum... but even the narrator hates himself. he's defeated. "i hate you... talking to myself" "i'm only bleeding" "you don't feel it after awhile, you take a beating" those lines just show how he feels helpless and no one notices... and after a while of dealing with this he just went numb... just accepted being nothing. he's given up on what he once desired and now his outlook has become pessimistic/nihilistic. he still thinks he's worth something ("would anybody tell me if i was getting stupider?"). but due to whatever he's lost hope. i love the last verse: "Where are the kids? i dont know... Maybe getting pregnant or on drugs or on welfare on top of the world on the honor roll on parole on the dodgers on the backs of milk cartons..." it just feeds his hopelessness. showing that everywhere he looks he just sees these pointless or erroneous things people are doing with their lives and feels lost in the bigness of it. feels he can't change the machine of the world and so just carries on the family traditions of defeat. |

i had to add my $0.02 since i love this song and it totally resonates with me... to me its about a breakup (obviously) where he's just been devistated by the loss. and the memory is holding him back, and holding him down. its a memory he doesn't like to even speak about. and nightly he just sees her when he closes his eyes, and thinks about their more intimate times. the memories are vivid and haunting. but every day he gets farther from the time he was with her, and the memories of who she is fade. and as they both fade into different people he'll always wonder who she is. when at one time he thought he'd be there to see who she was to death, now he knows they'll die without having a clue about who the other is. "and i think about you dying years from now..." really gets me... cause i think that about an ex... and it bums me out to think that the things in life she'll go thru wont be shared with me... and i'll never be able to share in her joys and sorrows. every day, shes just a little more inaccessable, a little less of the person i knew, a little farther off the path we were on together. all the while wondering if this distance could be a big mistake... |

alright, i had to put in my $0.02 about this song. i dont think its about an easy girl. i think its about him remembering an old relationship at the time when the passion was the highest... when they couldn't keep their hands off each other. and looking back he remembers all the passion... and how if he would've just slowed down he would've realized that he really loved her in that moment and that he was just so into her. but now its over... and he wishes the transition from being with her to being without her was "seamless" and that there was no pain in having to remember it all. thats what i've always gotten out of this song... |

i think this is about a girl leaving him... thinking she can handle things on her own... thinking she's the wiser one. he's none the wiser because he doesn't understand why she left and why she won't listen... but he thinks he can help her (hence hooking the cables). she's beholden to him because he helped her become what she is... but she's still lost or something... and he's urging her to come back. i love the line "the rain soaks up the sun"... because the sadness of loss kinda taints all the good memories... |

as someone said above, i like to think about Jesus being the protaganist in this song. its a plea, or observation He's making about the state of people these days. and the only thing that doesn't work is if the lyric is "cold hearted boy"... but i like to think it's "gold hearted" and then it perfectly fits Jesus. I think its about Jesus wanting everyone who's lost to just see and remember what He did for all of us. "my affection, well it comes and goes" - meaning people believe and then they dont... people lose focus on Him and He's asking to "help him out" - He doesn't want people to put him on the backburner... make Him a priority in your life because He wants to help... He came to help, but people reject Him. its kinda like the whole "help me help you" thing. "while everyones lost the battle is won with all these things that I've done" - perfect way of saying everyones lost... everyones trying to fight there fight without realizing the battles allready been won by Jesus dying for us. |

i'll have to disagree with above. God was never the devil's apprentice. i think this is more about personal stuggles... and how we all do things that we'll eventually regret. we all prolly at one time or another become the devils apprentice for the sake of personal interest. but MM does seem to knock God a lot... kinda makes me like them less... |
