the name lost keys comes from an incident where Adam lost his keys during a late night jam session while the band was writing the new album... it probobly doesn't have any large signifigance...

it was originally meant to be the title of what became Wings for Marie and 10,000 Days so there's probobly no connection with Rosetta Stoned...

ok, this is a little bit out of contex, but bare with me... from may newletter on toolband.com

'Granted, these people (the people who didn't believe the conspiricies) of relative affluence might not 'know' that 10.000 Days is merely a decoy album like you do, or that "Wings for Marie", "10,000 Days" and "Viginti Tres" are meant to be synched (played together) to make a super 'hidden' track, or that a very limited number of copies of the live DVD were released on 6.6.06 but can only be purchased by those giving the correct password (or is it a special handshake?) to sales clerks in certain record stores, but still, let's not conclude that they're not TRUE fans.'

posted on toolband last week...

1) The first (question) has to do with the Ouija session in which 'Obelisong' replies to you with an anagram...

Q) "Can you tell me something about the 'terrible' secret that one of the songs on the new record speaks of?"

A) "A OR ET TESTS ON D" (Rosetta Stoned)

That's all fine and dandy, as long as you have no problem believing that 'other-world' beings care to code their answers so cleverly... but...

Q) "With regards to this same song, what does the letter "D" that you pointed to stand for?"

A) "DAVE" (and Dave drives a van.)

This doesn't appear to coincide with a certain recent news entry in which you explained that the 'protagonist' in this particular song is none other than MAYNARD JAMES KEENAN.

2) The second issue is that you had stated in a past news entry that there would be NO guests on this album... but, if you read the credits for "Lipan Conjuring" you'll find Bill McConnell's name, not to mention the doctor and nurse in Lost Keys.

3) In the February newsletter you make a few references to Danny's ****, which I believe you later revealed represented his gong.. but what I don't understand is that in the same newsletter you write...

"After we fired a couple up, I asked if he'd managed to get a gong on the new one? "Yeah, on *****" he said with a mischievous smile."

So, why was 'GONG' so important to omit 3 times when you end up making direct reference anyway?

Hopefully you understand the confusion. Could you clear this up for us a bit?

A: If you read the post again you'll see that I never said that MJK was the so-called "protagonist." I said that he would be the one who knew the identity of the individual in question (as HE wrote the lyrics). For all I know, it isn't an actual person at all, or perhaps it's a composite of several people. Most likely, though, the lyrics and concept were inspired by a story told by Maynard's friend Bill Manspeaker (see the March, 2006 newsletter). Although the strange experience described by Bill happened to some people he knew who were camping at Giant Rock in Landers, California (and not at Area 51, as the lyrics state), this might just be a case of Maynard using a better know setting – that of America’s most famous secret base. I know from email that a lot of people think that I was the "protagonist" sitting out at Area 51 that night, but this is very doubtful for many reasons. First of all, as I've said, I have never eaten a Krispy Kreme doughnut. But more importantly, I've never taken LSD or DMT or any psychedelic drugs while out at Area 51. In my way of seeing things, it's just not the place for such things (for many reasons, some that should be quite obvious by now). However, in thinking about any possible inspiration on Maynard’s part, I did find one thing that MIGHT be of some relevance. In the May, 2005 newsletter, in talking about a recent trip to Area 51, I wrote the following with regards to Ray Santilli's controversial 'Magdalena' footage (more commonly known as the "Alien Autopsy): "With its combination of strange alien symbols, classical Greek, [proto] Phoenician and modern English, did anyone ever consider that what 'crashed' was a Rosetta Stone of sorts?

All things considered, we might never know the true identity of 'Dave', but with all those Krispy Kreme doughnuts we sure as hell can't rule out Eric Cartman, even though he hates hippies. Incidentally, last Saturday I made my 51st trip to Area 51 (mainly just to cure the deficiency of Venus.) Unfortunately there was no activity to report on the moonless night other than the usual thing of being carefully watched by security personnel at the perimeter. Well, at least I don’t remember anything unusual happening.

ah thirdeyeopen- i wouldn't be a provocateur if i didn't have a reactionary... nice bill hicks reference... off the arizona bay routine right?

do i believe the DEA... well i believe that they probobly keep good records about international drug trade...for example, if they were to post on their website that a lot cocaine is produced in columbia, would you immidiately assume they're lying... or is it just the kind of information that's just kinda common knowledge...

i never said this song was about pot... as far as we can verify it's just about hypocracy in general. if there's a deeper, more specific meaning to the song than it's hidden in the more obscure lyrics... however, it definately uses references to 'pot' (reefer, marijauana, cannabis, grass, etc...) to refer to hypocracy... like stinkfist uses the metaphor of fisting to refer to desensitization...

anyway, yeah, so Saddam was a bad guy that we funded... know who else we were funding during those turbulent times we call the 80's... well for starters we were funding the Iranians... you know, the folks who hate us to this day... the folks that were fighting the Iraqis at the time.... maybe we hoped they would all just kill each other off... with our weapons no less... oh and let's not forget our good buddy Osama, who with the help of the U.S. military and CIA helped bring the communist Soviet army to its knees in afghanistan... hmm wonder if they used any of that great special forces, unconventional warfare training they got from the CIA or any of those nifty training campsfor any other purposes...

no specific references to this stuff anyway...

no actually, anti social, if you would have read more carefully you would have noticed that these are what the members of Toolshed's forums generally agree upon... it is from Toolshed, isn't it... don't lie...

these are not the confirmed lyrics from MJK... i would think he actually knows for sure what he said in certain parts of the song...

paulfynch- that may well be worthy of the most absurd interpretation of this song yet...

and for your information... heroin in america doesn't come from afghanistan. number 1 supplier of heroin to the u.s. is mexico, number 2 supplier is Columbia, number 3 is Thailand and the golden triangle region.

opium from afghanistan is generally sent to turkey where it is processed into heroin and sent into europe.

don't believe me? check the DEA's website...

an interesting sidenote is that since the u.s. invasion of afghanistan many afghan farmers have forsaken growing cannabis for hashish production for the easier to grow, less noticable, and more lucritive growing of poppies, destined to end up as heroin on the streets of europe... thanks america!!!

--During Ramadan, Muslims forgo food, drink and sex, and pray unceasingly from sunrise to sunset or vice versa (so it rhymes).--

not exactly... cause that'd be a rough month with no food or drink, don't you think? no, during ramadan muslims forgo food and drink during the daylight hours. convieniently enough this occurs in the winter months, when the days are at their shortest.

and the martyr part... generally the ritual of the (muslim extremist)suicide bomber includes praying all night to purify ones self the night before their 'martyrdom'...

otherwise, great interpretation...

well anti social... i've done acid dozens of times (probobly in the range of 30+ encounters of varying intensity) and DMT about half a dozen times...

i've smoked dmt in several of it's natural forms... i've smoked pure crystaline dmt... and i've drinken ayahuasca...

and i won't even bother going into my experience with mescaline, salvia, psilocybin mushrooms, amanita mushrooms... etc...

now, let me explain... if this song were to be about dmt it would have to be with ayahuasca because with smoking dmt, one would be coming down in a matter of 15 minutes after smoking ('will i EVER be coming down')... so if it's a dmt experience, it would have to be ayahuasca, being as ayahuasca last more like 3 or 4 hours...

do hear even the most thickly veiled reference to ayahuasca in the course of this song? i don't... i hear several references to lsd though. not to mention that the first line in the song makes reference to the character eating a 'box of krispy kremes'... this would not even be possible on ayahuasca as it causes the most intense stomach cramps, vomiting, etc...

so, without any references to ayahuasca it seems silly to jump to the conclusion that dmt is being referenced in this song.

especially when you consider that the effects of dmt and lsd are so similar that if one were to spend 5 minutes in the head of someone peaking on acid, and 5 minutes in the head of someone peaking on dmt, you would be virtually unable to distinguish the difference, even as an experienced tripper.

they affect the same receptors and cause the same kinds of hallucinations... so saying that the song has 'more of a dmt feel' is just kind of a niave statement...

i'm not saying that this song is definately about drugs... cause it's vague enough to go either way... but there ARE drug references, and lsd IS the drug being referenced...

^^ in addition to being a tryptamine, closely related to lsd and psilocybin mushrooms, dmt is also a naturally occuring neuro-transmitter in our brains... our brains manufacture and secrete the stuff...

that being said... i'm sick of arguing this point... but let me make this absolutely, positively clear... ANYONE WHO KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THESE KINDS OF DRUGS COULD TELL YOU FULL WELL THAT THIS SONG COULD NOT BE ABOUT DMT...

not to mention the fact that there's not a single reference to suggest that it is dmt... there are many references to lsd, but not a single one to dmt...

actually thirdeye ... you clipped out the part of that quote that makes it make sense... what i actually wrote was...

'for one thing, with opium especially, addicts generally live long and relatively healthy lives' ...

see ^^^ opium...

and the whole thing started over my response to this dude's quote which said...

'- Junkies (heroin or opium addicts), will eventually die due to the addiction, but ironically they're still alive while watching "clean" people die instantly on tv. (war casualties, criminals, ect.)'

i was merely correcting a grave misconception...

anyway... i never said that a large quantity of narcotics can't kill you. shit, you can die from drinking too much water. i was however stating that the popular assumtion that junkies are all sick and diseased people who have one foot in the grave is silly at best. and you know what happens when you assume right?

anyway, when i refer to a drug as 'toxic' what i mean really is what it does to your liver. for example alcohol is highly damaging to your liver... cyrossis isn't an uncommon thing in hard core drinkers. opiates on the other hand... you could be pumped full of morphine all day, every day for 10 years and your body would suffer no ill effects from it. no liver damage... etc... that's all i mean by that...

terminal patients eh? in the netherlands, terminal patients are often given shots of a coctail of diacetylmorphine (heroin), cocaine, and alcohol... in carefully measured doses, to keep their spirits up near the end. of course in the netherlands euthenasia is also legal, so...

my point is basically summed up in what you said here...

'Don't tell me i should quit drinking while you've got tracking marks all over your forearm...don't tell me to put down my hash pipe while you light your cigarette, don't spit on a homeless junkie then go home to a big bottle of oxycontin and valium...don't pretend your clean when you're sooo dirty.'

exactly... it's not what you use, it's how you use it that determines how bad off you're going to end up... all drugs can be used safely, and all drugs can be used very dangerously...

we're all hypocrites... we're just less so if we awknowledge the fact that it's unavoidable...

Tool – Vicarious Lyrics 18 years ago
yeah... a college kid. i should have known... only college breeds such arrogance...

the time junkies take between fixes can be anywhere between 2 to 15 hours. withdrawls DO NOT set in in a matter of 4 hours, how the hell would full blown junkies sleep (and trust me, they do a LOT of sleeping) if they had to take a shot every 4 hours. i take it you get your info... uh... out of thin air maybe... are you just guessing? or did you get bad info?

as for the whole cardiac/respiratory depression aspect... well yeah, so... all drugs do something to your heart and lungs... pot speeds it up, cocaine speeds it up, acid speeds it up, meth speeds it up, valium slows it down, heroin slows it down, alcohol slows it down... there's nothing unique about the fact that it slows down your heart and lungs. and one would have to take a truly massive dose to die purely from heroin... and it is next to impossible to do with sniffing or smoking... you're likely to pass out LONG before you get into dangerous territory... a majority of heroin related deaths occur when the user drinks alcohol with his heroin, falls asleep on his/her back, and asphyxiates on their own vomit...

let's take a brief look at the day of a hardcore alcoholic as compared to a hardcore junkie... under optimal conditions, of course...

the alcoholic wakes up sick... hung over. he must begin drinking as soon as he is awake, not just to fight off the hangover, but to stave off the shakes which are on their way. the drinker drinks until he feels alright, but since alcohol starts seriously losing it's effect about 2 hours after the last drink the alcoholic must continue drinking all day. alcohol being a drug that is difficult to control your high (blood alcohol levels) with, the equilibrium between being too sick to function and too drunk to function becomes blurred... the drunk drinks until he's fucked beyond his ability to maintain and then passes out, only to do it again the next day...

the hardcore junkie wakes up in the morning still groggy headed from his last fix the night before. eventually, he will take his fix, and depending on the size of his habit he will either go back to sleep or go on about his day if he has anything to do. it's not difficult, with heroin, to maintain a level balance of the high. even at his highest, the junkie can walk a straight line, speak coherently, not piss himself in public, not pass out in bad places, not start fights...

anyway, my original point was that thinking about heroin users as lepers or something is foolish. it's just another drug, less harmful to the body than alcohol is... they still use it in hospitals as a matter of fact...

if you'll read the original post in question carefully you'll notice that i never said junkies live long and happy lives... that's usually not the case... but i did say that opium smokers, historically, live long and relatively healthy lives. check out some mid to late 19th century chinese history if you feel the need to verify this. opiates are not poisons... alcohol is...

the most harmless of drugs can have a devistating effect on one person's life while the most heinous and vile of drugs can be safely used for years and years by someone else... an addiction has more to do with the person than the drug...

i can't be held accountable for other people ignorance... be that about drugs or music or whatever... Atreiu, you are a loud mouthed little dipshit... (wouldn't wanna hold back, lest you call ME a pussy too)... just get fucked man, we all get it... you're smarter than everyone else here... K... happy?...

now, to finish my point on the subject that i'm now being insulted for...

the ONLY reasons people die or get dangerously sick (AIDS, hepatitus, abcesses) from heroin are...

1. the most common.... improper needle use, even though a majority of heroin users don't use needles...
2. inconsistant levels of purity due to illegal drug trade... a common factor in overdoses...
3. mixing with other drugs such as alcohol...

beyond these dangers, one could in theory use heroin every day of their life without ANY health problems...

withdrawl is a different story, i worked at a detox clinic for about a year, you know what A(hole)treiu... you can die from alcohol withdrawls... you can't from heroin... ever seen someone with DT's... do you even know what that means? sorry should i slow down...

basically Atreiu, shut your mouth boy, you DON'T know more about drugs than i do. you can talk like you do, but you only come off as a recent DARE graduate...so just keep that foot stuffed in your mouth for a bit you little cocksucker... glad heroin's you're new health plan, but if you want a real kick, try injecting a solution of lye... it's a rush...

that being said, i was only correcting someone else's misconceptions when i mentioned heroin in the first place... in relation to this song... 'stare like a junkie' refers to someone staring without much interest or emotion...

Nihasa- once again, you're misinformed friend... Hofmann was the first to synthesize LSD, and subsequently the first to try it. this happened at Sandoz Laboratories in SWITZERLAND (aussie accent? what does that have to do with anything)

the condition you're referring to... the ergot fungus that grew on wheat and rye back in the day. it was just that... a fungus... and it didn't contain LSD because LSD doesn't occur naturally... it's man made... ergot fungus contains Lysergic Acid Amides (or LSA) which can cause LSD-like hallucinations, but the other properties of the fungus can cause you to contract gangrene in your limbs... this condition (the hallucinations and gangrene) was known as St. Anthony's Fire... LSA, Lysergic Acid Amides ... must be chemically altered in a complicated process to end up with Lysergic Acid Diethylamide or LSD.... so do a bit more reading next time...

Rosetta... in the context of this album is a reference to the Rosetta Stone... i'm sure you learned about it in like 6th grade... didn't you? i know that's well over a decade ago for me, but i still remember...

time to throw out another idea that may have escaped a few people posting here...

so Maynard has had a beef with God for some time now... he made no secret of it in the song 'Judith' ('fuck your god')... how he was clearly angry with what had happened to his mother, despite her faith...

so now, that his mother suffered for around 10,000 Days.... and she finally dies... now suddenly Maynard's going to accept and love God?

no, this song might be the most cynical Tool songs ever in respect to religion... it seems he's demanding (from god no less) satisfaction for all his mother's faith and suffering... basically, that if anyone deserved the eternal reward that she did...

anyway, just couldn't wrap my mind around how he would get all soft and mushy on god now that his mom finally died...

'- Junkies (heroin or opium addicts), will eventually die due to the addiction'

you got it alllllll wrong friend. for one thing, with opium especially, addicts generally live long and relatively healthy lives. heroin is not toxic to your body, like say alcohol for example...

the word junkie in the context of this song only refers to someone camped out on their couch, devoid of emotion, watching the tube....

note the line 'stare LIKE a junkie' ... and junkies stare bored, emotionless, and comfortable... ties into to the whole living vicariously through the tradegy of others theme...

Blindrider-what makes you think that 'dave' couldn't have taken a ton of acid and imagined this experience... is it possible?

because the physical side effects of acid, as thirdeyewide noted would be dialated pupils, and a SLIGHLY elevated heart rate... nothing noteworthy. nothing life threatening.

how 'bout lines like '...my heart is pounding, cause this shit never happens to me' ... what do you think is implied by that? cause i know... i know exactly what he's talking about... it's about taking way more than you can handle.

this song is about a common theme in psychadelic trips, that one has recieved a 'key' or a secret of some kind (be it from the cosmos, or aliens, or your dead uncle bob... i've heard them all)... and then being unable to use/remember this amazing secret when you come down...

in this case it seems 'dave' took too much acid, imagined an experience with aliens giving him 'the message' , came too in a hospital and tried to tell his tale to the doctors...

unless you believe that Tool would write a serious song about an aquaintance of theirs being abducted...

do abductees normally 'shit the bed' hours after they've been returned to earth... cause i know acid victims do...

the only way to interpret this song as a serious recounting of an alien abduction is to ignore about half of the lyrics...

Rosetta Stoned... so stoned (high, frying, tripping, etc..) that he almost had the Key to decypher the secrets of the universe... but he forgot his pen... pretty simple.

yep, azmodon is right... you're overanalyzing to the extreme if you think this song is about anything other than a mad acid trip...

hints that it's about acid (for the billionth time)
-intro title (Blame Hofmann)
-intro theme, the 'patient' is catatonic in a hospital yet his vitals are stable... fully in line with what would be happening to an acid victim
-the line 'it's gotta be, deadhead chemistry'... an obvious acid reference... unless maybe the protagonist only thought he had taken acid?
- the line 'cause this shit never happens to me' ... boy have i heard this one a few times in my day... most commonly from friends who have taken way more acid (or shrooms) than they should have...
-the line 'will i ever be coming down?' anyone who's done lots of acid knows this feeling quite well...

so basically, you can take this song as a clever and amusing song about an acid trip gone wrong...

or as a corny (yet so deeply vague in any sense of seriousness, that one most overanalyze the entire song, while ignoring many important lines, answer me this, what about this song makes you think the protagonist DIDN'T take any drugs?) song about an alien abduction... while baring in mind that Maynard doesn't take alien or occult matters too seriously (as has been stated in countless interviews... while we know full well that he's written songs about psychadelics before...

take it as you will...

thirdeyewide- what's your problem man? quit riding me...

so, my opinion is 'uncalled for' ... well then, if any muslims, or christians, or jews, or hindus, or any other subscribers to organized religions are offended by the fact that i think they're wasting their lives believing the lies of some mad fool who's been dead for thousands of years... well, they can rest assured that i'm offended by the fact they think i'm inferior, or that i'm going to 'hell' because of the way i live my life...

let's just say that calling Islam a 'cheap ripoff' was about as friendly as i'm willing to get with orgainzed religion... and i don't play favorites, they're all guilty as hell as far as i'm concerned... they're the devisive ones, not 'non believers'...

Atreiu- if you think Tool has gotten into writing topical material... about pot legalization, no less... well, i just hope that aneurysm you're suffering from doesn't leave you facially disfigured...

he's using references to pot (cannabis) to talk about hipocracy, nothing new... think Stinkfist... or did you really think the song was about how to fistfuck someone?

what a dipshit...

Pink Floyd – Comfortably Numb Lyrics 18 years ago
**oh yeah, btw, that whole being pushed onstage while on muscle relaxers part doesn't sound too nice does it, certainly not comfortable. and this, if nothing else should make it easy to understand that the meaning of 'Comforatably Numb' isn't about a happy drug experience***

Pink Floyd – Comfortably Numb Lyrics 18 years ago
Put Quite Plainly- this is how the song ties into the storyline of the Wall...

' In the original scenario for the making of the album there were people banging on the door going 'Come on, it's time to go.' The idea is that they come to get him to take him to the show and he's in no state, so they get a doctor in so that they can actually get him standing up and wheel him out...and wheel him on stage.'

and this is the real life experience of Roger Waters' that inspired it...

'I had one guy (a doctor) once who thought I'd got food poisioning for an upset stomach. And he thought I had stomach cramps...he wasn't listening to me at all either. In fact, I discovered later on that I had hepatitis. He gave me this tranquilizer, it was in Philadelphia, and boy that was the longest two hours of my life. Trying to do a show when you can hardly lift your arm. If he'd just left me alone, the pain I could have handled. It was no sweat. I could hardly lift my arms or move any of my limbs. God knows what he gave me, but it was some very heavy muscle relaxant.'

-both quotes by Roger Waters

hope this clears it all up... this is really all there is to it... pretty simple

sorry thirdeyewide... i must have been high (snicker)...

get this guys... new symbolism found... and you heard it here first...

the color indigo ('weep in shades of chosen indigo') is the part of the visible spectrum that falls between 440 and 420 nanometers in wavelength... another pot reference? ...

'The human eye is relatively insensitive to indigo's frequencies, and some otherwise well-sighted people cannot distinguish indigo from blue and violet' ... ? ? ? signifigant? beats me... but it's an interesting conincidence otherwise...

Tool – Intension Lyrics 18 years ago
Intension (or "connotation") refers to the meaning or characteristics encompassed by a given word, often expressed by a definition.
Intension is often discussed with regard to extension. Intension refers to the set of all possible things a word could describe. By contrast, extension (or denotation) refers to the set of all actual things the word describes. For example, the intension of 'car' is all possible cars (including mile-high cars made of chocolate). But the extension of 'car' is all actual cars (past, present and future), which will amount to millions or billions of cars, but probably doesn't include any mile-high cars made of chocolate.
Intension is an essential part of meaning. The meaning of a word is the bond between the idea or thing the word describes and the word itself. Useful here is Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure's concept of the signified -- the concept or idea that a sign evokes. We can contrast the signified with the signifier -- the "sound image" or string of letters on a page that one recognizes as a sign -- and with the referent, the actual thing or set of things a sign refers to. Intension is analogous to the signified; extension, to the referent. The intension thus links the signifier to the sign's extension. Without intension of some sort, words can have no meaning.

i agree... pink floyd and led zeppelin weren't appreciated by all during their time, but they'll be listened to as long as music is listened to.

history will prove Tool to be of that calibre... our children will be buying these albums on whatever new meduim carries music in the future and asking us about what it was like to see them in concert, with envy in their eyes...

treasure this time, fans of great music, for one day Tool will be over and that will be that... fuck people who can't appreciate it... i'm getting 10x the value and enjoyment from this music than any of them get from the trash they consider worth listening to... fuck them if they think Tool fans are obsessive freaks... fuck all those too cool for school mofos...

sometimes there's a damn good reason certain bands get so popular and arouse such a cult following... Tool sold Pearl Jam under the table... 10 years ago it was the other way around... what does that tell you? these guys age like a fine wine... rant over... peace...
