| The Flaming Lips – Do You Realize?? Lyrics | 20 years ago |

This song has taken on an especially deep, emotional meaning for me. The other night I was driving with my girlfriend, and this song came up on the playlist, redone by The Postal Service. I ended up sobbing. Here's why. The words "do you realize" portray a sense of unknown truth. It implies that the phrase following it is true, but something that not all of us acknowledge. We're floating in space...just a rock among the millions of other rocks. Happiness makes you cry...anyone who has experienced happiness that intense is blessed. Everyone you know someday will die...so sad, yet so punishingly true. And then that you have the most beautiful face. It's TRUE, it's just not something you realize, and you need to! And instead of saying all of your goodbyes, etc: this, I think, is a rehashing of the old cliche "don't say goodbye, say 'see you later'". It's like saying "don't tell people you're going to leave them; tell them you tried your best, and you'll see them the next go around." "The sun doesn't go down; it's just an illusion caused by the world spinning 'round." I think this is a statement about reincarnation, and the passage of time in general. We may think that time is careening on at a billion miles a second, but in actuality it's just looping. People live, they die, and then they are reborn and the world spins around to allow the sun to rise again. I love this song, but I gotta stop listening to it now. Getting misty. Download the version by The Postal Service if you haven't heard it. |

They DO write about girls, just not frequently. Anesthesia? 1000 Memories? "You were the one, you were my everything", however, is not your typical relationship song lyrics. Writing songs about girls is not inherently evil, in and of itself...its boy bands and Avril Lavene that make it that way. Bad Religion sings about meaningful relationships...not skater boys or thong-thong-thong-thong-thongs. Athiest does not mean loveless. |

| Interesting to note that this song was quoted in You by Bad Religion. Their lyric: "Cause there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend, but baby I'm amazed at the hate that you consent and you..." | |

| Also, Bad Religion quotes The Beatles' song "We Can Work It Out" (The Beatles' lyric: "Life is very short, and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend. I have always thought that its a crime, so I will ask you once again") | |

The “place where everyone can be happy”, I interpret this as anything that a person can seek. The way it is described is used to impress upon the listener how important it would be to reach this place, whatever it may be. Think about something that you have always wanted, or you wanted for a long, long time. That feeling when you think about it, how perfect it will be, that is what the singer is trying to impress upon us. “The meanest little boys, the most innocent little girls” could be a sexual metaphor, which would change the interpretation of the first part (making it a sexual fantasy instead of a lifelong wish). This could also be that everyone has hidden wishes and dreams, even the meanest little boys and the most innocent little girls. The “dear” he is referring to is the listener (he frequently changes pronouns: you, dear, baby, and my friend, though “my friend” may not be a reference to the listener, but instead people as a whole). “I wish you the best of luck” should be taken literally: “in your quest for your goal, I hope you have good luck”. “Drop a card or letter” could just mean “keep in touch”, or it could mean “don’t forget your friends on your journey”. Or just “don’t forget about me”. In the line starting “baby I’m amazed at the hate” the lyrics change pace. I think this might just be a real generic “people are stupid” punk sentiment. The part about painting, considering it was preceeded by the hate comment, might mean that “you stomped all over my dream”. Also, I think the lyric is “…at the hate that you consent”, not “can send” Towards the end, I think it is actually talking about heaven….and that is all I will say now. It is late, my eyes are hurting, I am seeing little floating things…ciao, my swizzles. |

| This is a song about unrequited love, something that all of us fear in a relationship, whether it be our first love, or our 30th. Thinking that all of your love is not returned, it's a sense of insecurity in the deepest sense. That's what I think it's all about. The singer loved "her" too much, and she just couldn't return it. | |
