I'm sure all of you know that this song is about Marilyn Monroe's life. It's about all of the difficult things she had to go through as an actress. The world made it hard for her to live, and she died because of it. "Your candle burned out long before your legend ever did" means that she just couldn't take it anymore and she died, but she will always be remembered. |

I really like andshedied's interpretation. I feel the same way, and I can definitely relate to this song. Being raised in a catholic family, I always found religion very hard to swallow myself. Whenever bad things happen to good people, we often blame God, which is a completely understandable and human thing to do. I like Tori's line: "You make pretty daisies pretty daisies love.
I gotta find what you're doing about things here", because God makes nature beautiful, but what about(as andshedied said)murder, rape, and abuse that people endure every single day? I think it's a terrific song that most everyone can relate to. |

I think this song means that people have different perceptions of what love and life are all about when they're children as opposed to when they're adults. When we were children, we saw love as a fairytale, hence the line: "Moons and junes and ferris wheels, the dizzy dancing way you feel, as every fairytale comes real; I've looked at love that way." But when we became adults, we realized that love is NOT a fairytale, thus the line: "But now it's just another show. You leave 'em laughing when you go, and if you care, don't let them know, don't give yourself away." Love and life can be painful, and children don't see that. They see love and life as a fairytale. |

That's right, she does. That must've been a typo in the lyrics on this page. Good observation!
The most powerful lyrics that speak to me are: "Years go by will I still be waiting for somebody else to understand. Years go by if I'm stripped of my beauty
and the orange clouds raining in my head. Years go by will I choke on my tears till finally there is nothing left." I think this song is about her rape, and I can definitely relate. In that part of the song I just typed, she's talking about how nobody understands what she's been through and nobody ever will. She's been "silent all these years" about the pain she's been in. It's such a beautiful song. I feel like this song is the story of my life... |

When I bought "Little Earthquakes" almost 10 years ago(that was when I started to become familiar with Tori), I really admired her lyrics to this song. I thought it was incredibly brave and I could never have imagined what it must have been like for her to go through that...until 3 years ago when I, myself, was raped. This song was what kept me going and made me realize that I wasn't alone. I wish I had the opportunity to thank Tori for writing this song. This song is what saved me, and while CJF may call this song "boring", Tori is a very talented and amazing musician who is very successful and brave. I could never have gotten through my life without her music, especially this particular song, and there are no words to describe how grateful I am to Tori for writing this song. |

I think this song is about how people don't think that the big things in life are a big deal. For example, when Tori says, "Just another dead fag to you that's all; just another light missing in a long taxi line", she's saying that when a minority(like a homosexual, or "fag" as homophobic bigots call them)dies, some people think it's as insignificant as "another light missing in a long taxi line". Also, the line where Tori says, "You think you deserve a trust fund just because you want one; sure you talk the talk when you need to; I fear the whole world is starting to believe you", I think she's saying that the world is starting to get spoiled. Some people think they deserve certain things without even earning them. To me, this song is about all the problems in the world. Even though we think we've come so far in the world, there are still a lot of things that need to be fixed. I really love this song. It's everything I believe in, and it's one of Tori's best songs. Anyway, that's just my opinion! |
