Dropkick Murphys – The Fighting 69th Lyrics 21 years ago
Wow, no comments? OK, here's my input. The Fighting 69th was a company of all-Irish soldiers whose first claim to fame was their refusal, at Colonel Corcoran's orders, to serve as the Prince of Wales's honor guard on one of his visits to the colonies and Canada. By doing this, they became a symbol to Irish immigrants that they need no longer serve England like dogs. Their leader, Corcoran, and the company itself, became even more famous when they bravely fought for the United States just days after spurning England.

Nirvana – Pennyroyal Tea Lyrics 21 years ago
I think it's a very clever play on words. Its references to his recurring stomach problems are obvious, but there are deeper meanings.

The line "Distill the life that's inside of me" can mean a LOT of different things. If you understand the word distill, it means to purify and strenghten (such as distilled water, or wine distilled into brandy). That line CAN signify that he is becoming more purely and clearly himself - a depressing notion, because he obviously doesn't like who he is becoming.

Then there's the abortion aspect. Personally, I don't take this one literally either. He is referring to suicide, as if foretelling it, a theme occurring in many of his songs and inferred from his contact with the press. He is not aborting a fetus; he is little more than a fetus, and feels helpless to control his environment, emotions, even his actions.

"I'm anemic royalty" probably refers to an insecurity or deep-rooted belief that he is much less than his Holy Icon in the public mind makes him out to be. And the wordplay on the antiquated term "penny royalty" seems to reinforce this - he is a worthless figurehead, more powerful as a symbol than as a man.

This is just my take on the song, and maybe a little over-analyzed, but I can't believe this is simply a song about stomach pains.

Modest Mouse – A Different City Lyrics 21 years ago
Whether or not "Cassanova" is a myth, this song is about self-imposed isolation. Someone felt ignored by society and even his closest friends and family, so he's basically saying "Fuck you guys, I don't need you anyway." But then the sarcastic tone implies that isolation is no better than being ignored, and that he's just being petty and childish. I think EVERYONE has felt like this at one point or another - "If you don't need me, I don't need you."

Modest Mouse – Alone Down There Lyrics 21 years ago
To me, this song has always seemed to imply that god is fallable (flies, they gather 'round me and you too), and subject to human law, though somehow better. I thought it was saying God gets lonely, and that he isn't as high and mighty and powerful as we thought (the devil's apprentice, he gave me some credit, he fed me a line and I'll probly regret it). He's needy and dependant, too.
Basically, God was created in our image. He's not much better off than we are.
