It is hard to determine exactly which time period Maiden is referring to, mainly because of a small error in the lyrics.
The Cree, I believe, lived in the Dakotas or somewhere else on the Great Plains, so to them the Europeans would not have come accross the sea. If Maiden had changed the lyrics to leave out any reference to the sea, it would make more sense.
I think the song is just about the conflict between the Native Americans and Europeans in general and spans different regions, time periods, and povs. |

They already have quit. This song praises metal music and tells of the never-ending metal spirit of the band. Sadly these words have proven false. |

I'd say this is either about a pyromaniac/arsonist or about a god (in one religion or another) destroying humanity for their sins. I don't see quite as much evidence for the second one, though, since it says nothing about the sins of the people. "to burn the planet Earth", though implies someone of great power, perhaps a god or political leader, since one arsonist cannot destroy the whole world. |

A prisoner escapes from prison. If this is referring to any particular prison, it's probably Alcatraz, because that's the one they show in the music video. |

I always did think that it was about marijuana. The cigarette thing is probably true, but I'm guessing that that explaination was used to make the song more politically correct. Think about the crap Sabbath would have to deal with if they explicitly said that the song promoted marijuana. |

This is about a drug dealer (the wizard). Like most Sabbath songs it portrays drugs in a positive light ("He turns tears into joy"). |

It could be a love song, but a love song seems kind of out of place in Sabbath repertoire. Most of their songs deal with the negative aspects of humanity, evil, or drugs. However, on SBS they seem to change the subject of their lyrics to more positive thinking (A National Acrobat, Spiral Architect) |

At first, I thought that this song was contradictory to Under The Sun (well, the other way around since AF was released first), and in a way they are, (pro-religion vs. anti-religion), but they both tell listeners to be independent thinkers and not to believe only what others tell them.
P.S. I know this isn't lyric-related, but I think the use of pedal point during the refrain is cool. It creates an organ-like sound, another connection to church. |
