Nazareth is a town somewhere in the southern U.S. There's a Martin guitar factory there - i think thats what they're referring to |

I think the 'girl' in this song is just Rock and Roll in general. Knopfler might be talking about how he lost track of the real music because of the crazy, glamorous, money-soaked life he leads (and in the roar of dust and diesel I stood and watched her walk away/i could have caught up with her easy enough but something must have made me stay). |

this song is on the Central Park Concert CD - I believe he played this with Warren Haynes. Originally composed by Neil Young. Obviously refers to Hernando Cortez, the Spaniard who conquered Mexico, but on a deeper level it refers to a loss of innocence ("Hate was just a legend/And war was never known" until Cortez arrived). Not typical Dave, it almost has a Guns 'N Roses ring to it, but a great song. |

It's despicable that this song has 20 comments and all the others have none. Clearly not one of Van's best, if any of you can bear to think about it. |

um, no, not about anal sex. Van's singing about childhood love and his first sexual experience (hence the 'new game'). Van said that it's not what everyone thinks it is because it's supposed to be purely sexual, not sentimental and washed out like everyone interprets it to be.
and word to Sweet Thing. Definitely the best Van song ever. |

Jelly Roll Morton was a famous blues singer and a major influence in Van's music. His music was so good that it 'stoned' Van. |

go check out david dodd's annotated grateful dead lyrics (http://arts.ucsc.edu/gdead/agdl/#songs). It has a lot about Casey Jones that i'm not gonna bother explaining.
Jerry did say this about the tune: "I always thought it's a pretty good musical picture of what cocaine is like. A little bit evil. And hard-edged. And also that sing-songy thing, because that's what it is, a sing-songy thing, a little melody that gets in your head." |

Astral weeks is the best album Van ever created.
This song is obviously about love, but he's singing to a lover that has brought him back to plain and simple innocent childhood ("And I'll be satisfied not to read in between the lines"). He promises that he'll never return to his previous state of adulthood. The whole song rings with innocence and purity and hope that only a child could feel. |

first off, word to songmeanings being back
van said that he wasn't even sure of the lyrics to this song. it could be "misty" instead of "mystic" at one point of the song. Also "younger than the sun" could be "...son", "born" in the first line could be "borne", and "Ere the bonny boat was won" could be "...one". At this point Van was writing lyrics placing the sound above content. This song was meant to be interpreted as the listener chooses to. |

The solo is technically hard, but worthless. It's just patterns. Solos, in my opinion, should be creative, powerful, but most importantly, IMPROVISED. That's what makes the Dead so damn cool. And don't argue with me unless you play guitar.
I'm sure there was improv in live versions of this song, but the studio version, with the solo everyone knows, was written beforehand.
I do like the song, tho. |

I'm gonna suggest something that no one has thrown out for a while - what if the song is just one bad trip (i'm talking about acid here)? |

Okay here's how it is:
1. If you hate the Dead, why are you here in the first place?
2. Hippies don't exist any more. No one has the right frame of mind. You can still act and think like a hippie, and I respect that, but they really don't exist these days.
3. All you cynical fools, calm down. Chill. And smoke some weed if you want to - it might do you some good.
