Hüsker Dü – No Promise Have I Made Lyrics 2 years ago
@[Yer_Ma:41752] We aren\'t meant to interpret the three colours as part of tricolour flag.\r\nAccording to Wikipedia:\r\nhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Ireland\r\n\r\nPresented as a gift in 1848 to Thomas Francis Meagher from a small group of French women sympathetic to the Irish cause, it was intended to symbolise the inclusion and hoped-for union between Roman Catholics (symbolised by the green colour) and Protestants (symbolised by the orange colour).\r\n\r\nIn the song, I think the three colours represent the persona\'s hope for the best in life for the target of the song:\r\n* green - health and physical wellbeing\r\n* white - purity or being untarnished by the world around them\r\n* gold - financial riches

Ryan Adams – Harder Now That It's Over Lyrics 5 years ago
From https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/ryan-adams-abuse-me-too-songs-lyrics-796686/
Last week, New Pornographers singer A.C. Newman explained how he ended up a “character” in Adams’ Gold track “Harder Now That It’s Over,” after he told the singer-songwriter to stop mistreating Adams’ ex-girlfriend. “When I threw that drink in that guy’s face/It was just to piss you off,” Adams sang in 2001.

“Didn’t like that I told him not to be a dick,” Newman wrote, “so he went and bought a drink to throw on me.”

@[aldo1980:27840] I think a lot of Bruce's songs are about both cars and something else.

For examples, "Racing in the Street" where the persona does works on his car and does car races after work each day. But it's also about the emptiness of the working-class life. His wife/girlfriend is a shell of the person she was when he first met her at the races.

@[PGH91:24657] The Byrds aren't the only musicians who were interested in outer space. So you're going to need to be more specific.

Off the top of my head, other musicians with outer space include Parliament' with their "Mothership Connection" album. Sun Ra claimed to be from Saturn and had songs such as "Rocket #9" and "Love in Outer Space".

Yo La Tengo – Pablo and Andrea Lyrics 6 years ago
@[uhhhclem:22195] I did a little Googling.

https://jwa.org/encyclopedia/article/frank-mary claims:
"On December 28, 1974, Mary’s twenty-year-old daughter, Andrea, was killed in a plane crash in the Guatemalan jungle near the Mayan ruins at Tikal. One year later, in 1975, Mary’s mother nearly died from cancer, and within a year of his sister’s death, Pablo developed Hodgkin’s disease."

https://www.vanityfair.com/culture/2008/04/frank200804 :
In Home Improvements (1985), he picks up the scene, this time outside a Bronx mental hospital on his way to visit his son: “Pablo, I promise you, I won’t give up,” Frank says in voice-over. In the hospital, Pablo Frank is unresponsive, borderline insane.
"His daughter, Andrea, died at the age of 21 in a small-plane crash in Guatemala. His son, Pablo, lived a life of drug addiction and mental instability before killing himself, in 1994."

Hüsker Dü – Up In The Air Lyrics 6 years ago
This is one of my favourite songs.

A friend of mine said that she felt it was uplifting. There is a sort of fist-pumping jubilant sound to it. However, it's lyrics are really the opposite. The chorus is about futility.

"Picking petal offs a flower...Is love another way to count the things you haven't got?" From childhood to adulthood, it's a question that can plague some people.

My favourite lines sound really optimistic "Well, you can have anything you like" but is preceded by a condition that can never ever happen "When the dust has settled in the sky" - dust never settles in the air since it only ever settles on surfaces.

@[elrem48:7539] I don't know why you're so upset about this then. Everyone's entitled to their opinions even if they are completely wrong. My interpretation is they are idiots for making some rubbish up and believing in it. I also think Charles Manson is an idiot for misinterpreting "Helter Skelter" as a prophecy about race wars.

@[elrem48:7499] It is true that everybody has unique experiences and can interpret things differently. It doesn't mean that everybody is correct.

Look. Let's say I chose to interpret this song as about some belief that extraterrestrials are impregnating the population of earth by poluting the oceans with pink coloured flowers. Am I right? Am I wrong? Someone with a brain would ask what supports that crazy theory. What would back up my opinion? Is there anything in the song that mentions flowers, aliens, impregnation? Is there something substantial that indicates that the song writer had any fascination with such topics?

There is nothing here to support the World War I or II theory except the vaguest of connections. Look at the context: nothing about war, bullets, trenches. etc

Hüsker Dü – In A Free Land Lyrics 8 years ago
This is one my favourite Hüsker Dü songs. I find the lyric "The only freedom worth fighting for is what you think" very profound.

I'm not sure how the verse and the chorus relate to each other.

The verse is clearly expressing cynicism about officially endorsed sources of information. "Stars and Stripes" is a good use of double entendre since it's both a newspaper for the US Armed Forces and politicians who surround their podiums with the American flag.

The chorus is what is the best part.
I like to think of this chorus being more relevant than ever today and ahead of its time (like how "Divide and Conquer" was ahead of its time since it was written before the Internet became ubiquitous).

The world has changed a lot. In the past, the recognized authorities on subjects had to be qualified in their fields. eg doctors had to go through medical school before they could practice, journalists do a journalism degree and/or start working for a newspaper (etc) and build up their reputation etc. Let's not forget that things needed to be proven scientifically and recognised by a body of peers.

In the 80s, there was a huge self-published zine movement with people using their photocopies etc. In the 90s, absolutely anybody could publish their own opinions on a website or email. These days, there so many people who read unqualified and unproven information on the Internet and feel they are experts in something. eg Spending a couple of hours reading about the "harms" of vaccination and voila - they have done their "research" and will rant on about the alleged dangers of vaccinating children.
There are also the frauds and crackpots on social media who claim they cured their cancer from healthy eating and coffee enemas eg Jessica Ainscough and Belle Gibson.
Offline, there are people who played a little bit of roller derby and suddenly become coaches for a league and people look up to their from the little experience.

So to me, the chorus is cynicism at the everyday person who claims to be an expert without earning it. People go to them instead of those who spent time being formally educated and reading up on things.

The Replacements – Portland Lyrics 9 years ago
I really love this song. It's so melancholic. I don't really know what it means.

I'm surprised nobody has pointed out that it's one of the few instances where Westerberg reuses lyrics - specifically "It's too late to turn back, here we go" was in "Talent Show".

Anyway, recently, it seems that a few articles have been published about The Replacements and Portland. The short version is this:
* the Mats had a particularly infamous drunk and/or awful show in Portland at the end of the PTMM tour on Dec 7 1987 supported by Young Fresh Fellows,
* later wrote the song "Portland"
* and etched an apology to Portland in the run-out groove of "Don't Tell a Soul".

These articles have more details and actual first-hand accounts and even an adorable comic:
http://www.aquariumdrunkard.com/2013/04/23/sevens-the-replacements-portland/ is an older article from 2013

More recent articles from April 2015 when The Replacements returned to Portland for the "Back by Unpopular Demand" tour and with Young Fresh Fellows as support act again:

Ha ha ha ha! Maybe I enjoy snarkiness too much. There are various accounts online of the Tom Petty/Mats as support tour being troubled including The Mats stealing and wearing Petty's wife's clothing onstage.

http://www.avclub.com/article/paul-westerberg-13838

O: Did you mind Petty swiping your "rebel without a clue" line? [That line, from The Replacements' "I'll Be You," turned up in Petty's "Into The Great Wide Open." –ed.]

PW: It miffed me a little bit, but it's all... I'd steal something back from him, if I could find something I liked.

1) "Bastards of Young" was not the blacklisted video. MTV wouldn't play "The Ledge" video because the song dealt with suicide and there was a hysteria that even discussing suicide would increase the likelihood of people committing suicide.

2) There's no song called "Here Comes a Replacement" - it was "Here comes a Regular".

3) Each to their own but I love this song. It may seem too commercial to some and Westerberg may not like the multitude of chorused guitars at the start but I think it gives the song a memorable intro. The video is pretty cool, capturing various antics such as Tommy regurgitating water like a fountain, some sort of disagreement over Chris' drumming and Paul trying to walk on top of the drum kit before inevitably falling.

Here's a link to a reference http://dag.wiee.rs/debaser/lyrics/Manta_Ray.php that has a little bit more about his limited experience (he sounds disappointed by that).

On a side note, since there are a lot of comments about UFOs and underwater here, I feel like I should mention there's a lesser known phenomenon called USOs - Unidentified Submerged Objects. These incidents are like UFOs but the objects are underwater. In some cases, the object is seen flying then entering the water or leaving the water then flying.
The Shag Harbor Incident in Canada 1967 may be the most famous case of a USO.

+1 The vocals have those feeling.

Strangely, the first time I heard this song was a cover by Yo La Tengo, their label-mates from Matador Records and who Times New Viking portrayed in one of YLT's music videos.
That version is a quiet serene version and come across as more mournful.
I love both versions.

This is incorrect.
1) It's a conceptual album of a boy who runs away from a broken home, finds he is more dissatisfied and disturbed by the great big world and returns home.

I've read the entire Bible. A lot of it can be explained when read in context but there are parts that are not loving and challenging. The book of Joshua is particularly hard as God demands genocide of the occupants of the Promised Land. Even looking at the Bible as a Reformist, that everything points towards the redemption offered through Jesus, how does that show love to the dead Moabs etc?
