Eagles – Doolin-Dalton/Desperado (Reprise) Lyrics 19 years ago
Amazing song, but whoever posted it, posted the verses in the wrong order. It starts with "Well the stage was set, the sun was sinking low down...."

When a local boy was murdered by another boy at the end of 2003, I listened to this song alot. I didn't know him, but some of my friends did, and it was such a tragedy.

This song will always make me think of him.

The Smashing Pumpkins – 1979 Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm 14. It's raining outside. My best friend and myself are sitting in my room making mix tapes. He's my love, my life, my everything. We're talking about our band. We're going to make it huge. We are. We'll get out of this fucking town.

Thats what this song reminds me of. Just being young, bored, stuck in suburbia. Wanting to get out, not knowing how. Making plans for the future. He's still in that town. I'm a 20 minute drive away, but I'm still tied to that town. We're both 21. We're both still planning our great escape.
Some things just don't change.

1979 will always be the theme song for our plans.

Midnight Oil – Blue Sky Mine Lyrics 19 years ago
A Blue Sky Mine is a blue asbestos mine.
http://www.asbestosdiseases.org.au/asbestosinfo/wittenoom_tragedies.htm
It's a bit lengthy, but a good summary of the Wittenoom tragedy which Chrisb1 mentioned above.
The protagonist, is just an ordinary man, trying to feed his family, but knows that his job is killing him and there's nothing he can do.

Midnight Oil – The Dead Heart Lyrics 19 years ago
Its the plight of Indigenous Australians from their point of view. The song brilliantly captures not only their plight, but their use of English as a pidgin language.
If you've ever heard an Aboriginie speak, especially one from the centre of Australia (more so than the cities), you'll know that they speak in an interesting way. "White man came took everything", not only a great lyric, but a very accurate representation of how an Aboriginie would communicate in the English language.

Hooray for Midnight Oil!

Midnight Oil – Beds Are Burning Lyrics 19 years ago
I made the trip from Melbourne to Sydney on January 29th, 2005, to go to the Wave Aid concert.
It was there that I got to see Midnight Oil play live, for the first and most likely last time in my life.

They played this song, along with a handful of others, and it was an amazing experience to just shout out the words, along with 50,000 other Australians.

Peter Garrett and the Oils, always saying what everyone else was thinking, but too scared to say. Lets hope his political career won't muffle him too much.

What a group of Champions the Oils are.

Cheers!

Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros – Redemption Song Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this is Joe's epitaph. This song was released on his posthumous album Streetcore, and to me, it's Joe having his final say. He didn't know he was going to die, but hearing this, it doesn't matter. He's left us with something to think about.
He wrote protest music when he was with The Clash - he was always politcially minded, but this song feels like the words of a man who knows he's too old (or in Bob Marley's case, too sick) to stomp around angrily, but who hasn't finished saying what he wanted to say.

They should have put these words on his gravestone:
"Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom
'Cause all I ever had
Redemption songs
All I ever had
Redemption songs
These songs of freedom
These songs of freedom"

And so now it's up to everyone else. Keep singing the songs of freedom. Keep fighting the good fight. Continue Joe and Bob's (and everyone else's) good work.

Cold Chisel – Bow River Lyrics 19 years ago
It's pretty straightforward - he's picking up and leaving town, going back to Bow River. He's sick of slogging it out at work, reckons he's worked long and hard enough to go. So he's going. And he's telling his girl that if she wants to come, she had better decide now, cause he's going, with or without her.
It's a great Australian ballad about running to paradise - leaving the city and retiring to a warm, tropical place. An extention of the Great Australian Dream, if you will.

On a personal level, it will always make me think of my Dad. My Dad went back to his Bow River a few years back. I didn't want to move interstate with him, but he asked me to listen to this song, and I did. After hearing the song and reading the lyrics, I understood his reasons for wanting to move to Queensland, and I respected them. We don't live together anymore, as I moved back to Melbourne, but I think that one day I'll go back to Bow River and be with him again.

Cold Chisel – Flame Trees Lyrics 19 years ago

I think it's about reminiscing with your mates - over the girl that got away, over the old antics, and watching all the young people embarking on their lives, all the while remembering the old days.
Such a richly evocative song.

Midnight Oil – Truganini Lyrics 19 years ago
"I see the Union Jack in flames, let it burn"

A very risky and ambitious statement to make. Hope this doesn't come back to bite Peter Garret in the ass, now that he's embarked on a political career.
Should be noted that I think it's a great lyric - and I'm glad someone was brave enough to say it. But I guess thats why Midnight Oil are so important. They say what everyone else is thinking.

Jackson Browne – The Load Out/Stay Lyrics 20 years ago
I adore this song. It's one of my Dad's favourites, and when it came on in the car while we were driving, we'd turn it up real loud and just sing our hearts out.

I think my Dad always secretly wished he was a musician - he lives vicariously through this song.

I'm going to see Jackson Browne on Friday here in Melbourne, I'm so excited.

Queen – Bohemian Rhapsody Lyrics 20 years ago
It's about nothing. The more I listen to it, the more I am convinced of that. It's just a bunch of operatic nonsense. Genius nonsense, but nonsense all the same.

If that's not enough proof, witness this section from the musical We Will Rock You.

Pop puts the tape into the player. The opening harmonies of Bohemian Rhapsody start playing.
TAPE: IS THIS THE REAL LIFE?
IS THIS JUST FANTASY?
CAUGHT IN A LANDSLIDE,
NO ESCAPE FROM REALITY?
OPEN YOUR EYES, LOOK UP TO THE SKIES AND SEE... POP: That's all there is. The rest, unfortunately, is an episode of something called "The Flying Doctors"
GALILEO: Wow. What we heard was so beautiful! But what does it mean?
POP: Isn't it obvious? Is this the real life, is this just fantasy-y-y-y-y?
SCARAMOUCHE and GALILEO look lost.
POP: Cyberspace! The scroll speaks of a soulless, virtual world where the kids will be caught in a landslide of computer recorded anodyne pop. C, R, A, P-
GALILEO: Crap!
POP: Exactly! The text predicts a time when crap would dominate the charts. It begs the kids to open their eyes-
GALILEO: Look up to the skies-
BOTH: (singing, out of tune) And see! SCARAMOUCHE: Wow. So you really think that's what it meant? Ha. And there's me thinking it was just a load of pretentious old bollocks!

Queen – Radio Ga Ga Lyrics 20 years ago
I disagree - I think the point of this song is that despite video and all the other junk coming along, radio will still be the original form of live media.
This part is why I think that:

"We watch the shows-we watch the stars
On videos for hours and hours
We hardly need to use our ears
How music changes through the years
Let's hope you never leave old friend
Like all good things on you we depend
So stick around cos we might miss you
When we grow tired of all this visual
You had your time - you had the power
You've yet to have your finest hour"

The other reason I think this is because of the song's use in the musical We Will Rock You. I've recently spent 5 months being involved with the musical, so I feel that I'm qualified to comment as such.

Nine Inch Nails – The Perfect Drug Lyrics 20 years ago
There's no way this song is about actual drugs. It would be far too obvious to write a song about drugs and then call it "The Perfect Drug". Trent is smarter than that and so are his fans.

The Ataris – So Long, Astoria Lyrics 20 years ago
I love this song. It totally reminds me of my teenage years. It never snowed in winter where I live, but the concept of someone standing in the middle of my street is very real.

My best friend and I used to play his guitar in his bedroom, and talk about starting our own band, a dream that never happened for us. I also first saw The Goonies at about age seven with him - as soon as I heard this song I had to call him, because I haven't seen him for ages and love him to death.

It makes me want to be 14 again. 21 is just too old.

Argh. Why does everyone think that every song is about drugs?

Just because drugs are linked with rock and roll, doesn't mean that every musician is writing about drugs. Give it up, people.

Ben Folds Five – Don't Change Your Plans Lyrics 21 years ago
I'm going with Tropicalia 3 as well.
It seems to be about a man who's moved cross country with a woman, but needs to move back home, to where he belongs.

When I moved with my family to a different state, I hated it, and decided to move back home, without them. This summed up perfectly how I felt about it - I love my dad and sister, but I need to be where my heart is, and thats in my home town.

Foo Fighters – A320 Lyrics 21 years ago
I read so many comments on this site, about different songs by different musicians, that say songs are about drugs, and I say it here once and for all NOT ALL SONGS ARE ABOUT DRUGS!!!. Especially Foo Fighters songs. Dave doesn't use drugs. I am so sick of reading that hoary old cliche.

That said, here's what the song is about:
An A320 is a passenger plane, similar in size to the Boeing 767. It's built by the Airbus company, in Toulouse, France, hence the A in the model number. It seats 150 passengers in a single aisle, two class cabin, and can travel average distances of 3000 nautical miles or 5550 kilometres.

Apparently, Dave has a slight fear of flying, hence the imagery in this song, and others, like Learn to Fly. However, Richenback's explanation is also extremely plausible.

To me, it's about the financial collapse of the airline my father and I worked for, Ansett Australia. Towards the end, they were only using Airbus A320 aircraft for their domestic services, and the lyrics in this song really describe the way the airline just suddenly collapsed, and no-one who worked for the airline knew it was coming, or had any way of saying goodbye. We all dropped from a great height of working for the greatest airline in the world, to the ground, and didn't know what to do with ourselves afterwards but feel incredibly sad.

I think it's great - so much energy and power, and you can really hear Dave's love of metal, it just makes me want to leap around the room.
As for the song, I think it's about Jesus. I suppose the kiddies on the Pink Floyd discussion board would have more thoughts about it than I do.

Foo Fighters – February Stars Lyrics 21 years ago
Lyrics are incorrect, and I only just noticed. Here's the correction:

hanging on
here until I'm gone
right where I belong
just hanging on
even though I watched you come and go
how was i to know you'd steal thel show
one day I'll have enough to gamble
I'll wait to hear your final call
Bet it all

hanging on
hanging on here until I'm gone
right where I belong
just hanging on
even though, passed this time alone
somewhere so unknown
it heals the soul
you ask for walls, I'll build them higher
we'll lie in shadows of them all
I'd stand but they're much too tall
and I fall
february stars
floating in the dark
temporary scars
february stars

Jimmy Eat World – Bleed American Lyrics 21 years ago
This is my favourite on the Bleed American album.

I'm not sure what it's all about, but one line in particular stands out.
"Sign up, its the picket line or the parade"

That makes me think of the Vietnam War.
Sign up, it's the picket line - the anti-war protests
or the parade - the military service. When you join the army, you march in parade.

Thats just what stood out for me.
