Pretty much right :) though I should add that "Charlie Big Potatoes" here is like the phrase "Billy Big Bollocks"...i.e. someone who goes around being boastful, arrogant and callous. The sort of person who might ruin someone's childhood with sexual abuse, for example. |

| Skunk Anansie – We Love Your Apathy Lyrics

|
Yep, it's about how the people of the western world just blindly sit by and indulge themselves in their own little lives with minor problems, rather than look beyond it. The song is a sarcastic statement by the government/authority, praising us for being indifferent and malleable, allowing them to get away with what self-serving bull**** they like. |

| Serj Tankian – Empty Walls Lyrics
|
I think the answer is something of an amalgamation of a few ideas people have thrown out so far.
Basically, it's about mistrust in the government, media and social authority. Not JUST the Bush administration, but the Turkish government during the Genocides, the Third Reich and its supporters, even Mugabe and the old Khmer Rouge, if you think about some of the references in the song.
Serj is challenging us as society to try to see things beyond our own individual lives and the unimportant things we concern ourselves with, when far bigger injustices are being committed in the world. It's also a verbal challenge to the self-serving types in power, to step out of their own arrogance and consider their actions; according the album notes, the correct lyrics are:
"I want you to be left behind those empty walls
I TAUNT you to see behind those empty walls"
So he's suggesting both that the government should put themselves in their victim's shoes, and also that people in society should open their minds up to what's going on around them, not just seeing the images the media chooses to show them (the empty walls being television sets perhaps...an idea similar to the story of BYOB's video).
Could "empty walls" also perhaps relate to see-through fences such as those at Guantanamo Bay? |

| The Manhattan Transfer – The Offbeat of Avenues Lyrics
| 18 years ago
|
|
Why haven't more people commented on this? :S I believe the lyrics are basically just snippets of conversation that one of the band heard when walking around the streets of New York (or a certain venue perhaps), catching little pieces of conversation here and there, and cut them roughly together to make a song that vaguely rhymed :) pretty interesting way of doing things, especially as it makes you wonder what the rest of each conversation consisted of. The song is delightfully confused yet also has a sense of structure, rhythmn etc, as if it's one meaningful collection of words rather than a rough assemblage :D eh maybe I'm just rambling. Catchy tune either way. And the harmonising still makes a little hair stand up on my neck, so perfect it is at times. |

| Kansas – Carry on Wayward Son Lyrics
|
Erm...everyone linking it to Jesus seems to have some very skewed idea about the definition of "wayward" :S allow me to quote the dictionary;
1) Given to or marked by willful, often perverse deviation from what is desired, expected, or required in order to gratify one's own impulses or inclinations. (Also see Synonyms at unruly.)
2) Swayed or prompted by caprice; unpredictable.
Neither of those sound like a very laudable version of Jesus, do they? :) If the guy's so religious, it's not going to be tongue-in-cheek. Some of the lyrics would infer that he's also both greedy, arrogant, and mad/ignorant ...so chances are this song is NOT about him.
Sorry I can't offer a positive interpretation, but at least I've hopefully helped in terms of deducting what it's NOT about. |

Prodigy aren't "drum & bass" as such, I used to think that too...they're technically "Bigbeat" electronica.
As for the song...bloody awesome. I saw them do this first at Isle Of Wight festival, and it's the best version I've seen since...something about the live energy when they do it, just adds to the power of the song. |

I'm pretty sure the lyrics are "L.A. food-store Cabernet"...as in very cheap Cabernet Sauvignon that he's getting totally hammered on, and which he wakes up from with this godawful hangover. Cheap wine is the worst for this and quite rightly so...it should act as a just reward for anyone stupid enough to bother drinking crap like that...for a mere three pounds more, you could probably get a rather good mid-range equivalent, with ten times the flavour. |

To all those who wish to call Miss Clarkson talentless...do try downloading her live acoustic version of this song. I'm not a fan of reality TV talent shows, and I'm VERY particular about my music (it's my life and passion, life's too short to listen to crap music)...and I can honestly, objectively tell you that, if you take away any prejudices you have and listen to that version of the song, you can tell she has a genuine talent. Any schmuck can sound good on an edited album, but it takes real skill to sound good acoustically. |

| Cake – Comfort Eagle Lyrics
|
This song *is* about religion and how it's becoming more commercialised in an attempt to stay alive; people are turning to reason and rationality, and the only way they can keep their religious followers is to "modernise" by dressing it up in an accessible and hip way. I think it's also making a satirical dig at televangelism, much like Jesus He Knows Me by Genesis (go look it up if you don't know it). If you think I'm wrong, sit back and have a look at the place around you; how many of these new huge arena-style "New Life" churches do you see popping up everywhere? Christianity actually buying out poster space all over the place for flyers and billboards advertising Rejesus (www.rejesus.co.uk). So to summarise: religion is whoring itself out just to stay alive.
Incidentally, modern rap as we know it IS a "white boy"'s invention...the earliest known musical "rapper" is in fact Sage Francis, a white dude with a beard. However, it does originally have its roots in the "urban beat poetry" of people like Langston Hughes and Allen Ginsberg. I don't see why we have to have this ridiculous "blackittude" surrounding Afro culture, especially rap; so only white people should be allowed to sing classical choral music? And surely, if we're really thorough about it, all rock, jazz, blues, r'n'b and...well, just about every modern form of music, should be performed only by black people, as they're all rooted in very much black jazz of the 1920s? Have some bloody consistency at least, if you're going to try making some throwaway insult at a great band like Cake. |

I think From_Dust has hit the nail on the head; it's about the relentless consumerism and "reality" television we have on our screens nowadays. But, it's also occured to me; Serj uses TV as a COMPARISON...so what is he referring to that reflects the television? My best guess would have to be organised religion, or more specifically the prejudices of the Old Testament...in there, if you read carefully, it mentions sinners in hell being sodomised, abuse of women to be acceptable, and rape actually being CONDONED in some circumstances! |

Awesome song, and the lyrics are pretty self-explanatory; it's about the cigar-smoking "bourgeoise" administration (I'm not communist, so don't accuse me of it just for using the phrase), and how all they do is indulge in a cycle of mutual back-patting and macho poseuring (my cock is bigger than yours! etc) that they present across the world stage. Just look at how they're dealing with Nort Korea if you really want a good example of what I mean. |

Fantastic song, probably the gem of the entire album! At first I found the style pretty jarring, but once you get into it...it just flows like water and you appreciate the range and smoothness of it.
Lyrics-wise, it's pretty obvious what it's about...SOAD, quite rightly, are known for being very much anti-war pacifists, and it's good to see more bands are able to address these sorts of issues with the satire that they do (though they're accused of "Michael Moore tactics", I'd disagree...music/poetry-based political criticism has been around since Herodotus, and SOAD simply refine it). I love the line "you depend on our protection, yet you feed us lies from the tablecloth"...for me it just sums up the administation's offhand, almost disdainful attitude to the voting public, feeding them what they want to hear for more votes and not for the genuine greater good. "Where the fuck are you" is probably the question on every last dying soldier's lips as things fade to black, dying for a debased cause they don't even realise they're fighting for. |

Ok people, lets not let this become a political diatribe, it's a site for commenting on music. I very much enjoy political debate, but perhaps this is not the best place for it. But just while everyone else is throwing in their two cents, allow me to comment.
The fact of the matter is, if you ask absolutely anyone that hasn't bought into the Bush administration's jingoistic bullsh*t, they'll tell you Bush, whether he's well-meaning or not, has done nothing but help ruin America, put it even more at risk of attack and has massively increased anti-American sentiment. It's really disturbing how anyone that realises this and speaks it is branded "anti-American". Eminem clearly realises this and is attempting to target his audience; young voters, students and the black minorities. As we can see from the huge rise in voting in 2004 from these minorities, politically-inspired music does make an impact, and that includes Eminem.
Have none of you pro-Bush people realised that never in modern history has a sane major recording artist released pro-establishment music? Music is a big medium for dissent, and Eminem is very much one of the more outspoken examples of this (though even I admit I'm not a huge Eminem fan, though he still has a lot of correct things to say).
Peace. |

Oops, pressed send before I wanted to finish! I didn't mean to specifically target you so much, more people that call them sellouts.
I was just going to quickly add that yes, their sound has altered. However, I don't think their music is any less complex. The simple matter of fact is, they as artists felt that they hadn't found their true sound at the S.C.I.E.N.C.E stage. On the Fungus Amongus album booklet, Brandon even writes an apology, asking forgiveness for their uncultivated and less tight (though by all means excellent) sound.
I also very much agree that their latest album (Crow Left of The Murder) is far less consistent in quality than their previous ones, but every band has to slip up every now and then. Despite the average nature of many of the songs, there are some gems within the album, such as Megalomaniac, Pistola and Agoraphobia. |

Jimbobjoe; I really don't understand why you and other similar people instantly leap to the act of crying "Sell outs!" the moment a decent band actually has a major label realise they have huge talent. Tell me, on what grounds would you deny accepting an offer from a large label, assuming they were offering something superior to your current label? Sadly it's the way the music business works...one must sacrifice the ideal of not going slightly corporate with music in return for people hearing the music. As long as they don't compromise their musical integrity by not performing their own instruments, miming, not writing their own songs or doing everything their label/company want them to, it's fine by me. |

People, please. Can we NOT assume every Incubus song is based around either drugs or this Mayan prophecy? This is a song about not being complacent and letting life pass us by. Brandon urges us to get up and do something to make the world a better place (which admittedly would help avoid the "end of civilisation" that the Mayans mentioned, but I doubt he had it in mind when he wrote it). Brandon and I both share a love and respect for Gandhi, and this was very much the sort of message he used to spread too. |

Sorry all, but there is a very obvious meaning to the song. He's addressing an ex-lover or possibly a friend who wasn't there for him/dumped him. He's taking pleasure in pointing out to her/him how "what goes around comes around", and now that she/he mistreated him, the same is happening to them. "Reciprosity" of treatment is the key here. |

Quite simply, it's about indecision and procrastination. The "green" he refers to is that of a traffic light. I hate to disagree with most of you guys and correct you, but this is generally how I interpret the song: He wakes up thinking about the girl he's broken up with and is torn between whether he wants her back. He feels great loss about losing her as a companion, but then he steels his resolve by thinking "but then again" and listing her flaws. This indecision continues until the last line when he ends with a very final "the day has come, and I WANT off that ride". It's a song about him making that difficult decision, whether you give the relationship a second chance, or whether you move on and try to find someone better. C'est facile :oP |

I agree that it's about childhood and the transition between that and becoming a man (though it'd take me an age to explain each and every line and every possible meaning to support it). While the whole Jesus/spiritual interpretation is perfectly possible, it's unlikely, bearing in mind SOAD aren't Christian and oppose organised religion. I know I've already posted, but I have to make this clear: THIS IS NOT ABOUT DRUGS! Snowblind, SOAD's cover of the classic Ozzy song (it wasn't actually Sabbath, but Ozzy's solo work), however IS about drugs. The reference to snowblind in this song is NOT referring to drugs or the cover song, rather it's trying to suggest how there's a metaphorical barrier, a snow blizzard in this case, which prevents him reaching his love or being reunited with her. I'm thinking it could be a metaphor for cold, dark death. |
