| I think this song is about waking up one day and just wondering what the hell you are doing with your life. It is very "Fight Club" almost... in the way how the person describes the cars and the city. Its like wondering what happened to your dreams and aspiration. You fall alseep and all of a sudden your working 9-5 in a job you hate and living for very little. Am I crazy to want this kind of life? The line about drifting off is the person trying to feel alive again... it is a beautiful song and it is very interesting how some of the lyrics about the boredom and the ideas the mind comes up with (Imagining the cars falling into a wall of fire...). I don't know what this song is about... but that is how I feel it. | |

| This song is very interesting indeed. I love the timing signature.. very complicated timing. I think yrogerg77 is pretty much right. Sting also spends a time jealously rambling on about the possible new man in this girls life. The lyrics are very good at telling the story, and Sting does it in this song one of the most gracefully he has ever done, which is quite an accomplishment considering the songs strange time structure. | |

I feel that it is both... a passionate moment... perhaps with no regrets. But I'm not sure... many mixed messages in this song... alot like the situation it could be very well describing. I am not going to pretend to know what the song is about, because I don't know, but I do know that the song sounds like love. Probably my favorite song on this CD. | |

There is only one question I can think of when I hear this song... and that is "Is there anyway this song could be any better?". No. This song is an example of why U2 are one of the greatest bands in the world. From the orchestra loop that enters the song, to edges slide guitar and the rhythm section knowing exactly how to set the mood even further. I swear if I just heard each word Bono sings in this song alone, I would probably be moved. The amount of emotion and feel in his voice is incredible, and when he is singing "I want you to know that you don't need me anymore", I can't help but almost cry. I don't know what this song is about, but to me its about losing someone... or being the one who is being lost. He is almost saying "Everything will be alright... I can't tell you why I know it, but it will...". This song is one of the most beautiful and meaningful songs I have ever heard. Although almost every song by U2 makes me feel this way, some are special, and this is one of them. |

This song is just another little peace of the genius that Sting and the Police laid out for us. The music in this song literally floats along... very slowly and hauntingly. This is really brought out by how Sting chooses to sing the lyrics - almost in a wave like motion between the notes. The music stays this way until the bassline and drums start moving in the last verse - this change of feel combined with the strong final lyric ("then you will find your servant is your master"). As far as the meaning, I can only guess it is about being with a married woman and lusting for her. And she lusts for the narrarator too. In Greek Mythology, Scylla and Charibdes are female sea monsters who lived in caves opposite of each other and devoured sailors. I think this is a representation of maybe the narrarators girlfriend, and the married woman he is seeing. The Narrator is constantly staring at the ring, which is almost taunting him as he can't have her. The 'destiny sold' is her life almost. She is now stuck forever with one man(her husband). It is now all reflected in that ring. Mephistopheles is a devil who Faust(a magician and alchemist) sells his soul to for more power. This is representing that The Nararratorwill sell his faith(in his girlfriend) for power(the chance to be with the married woman). The lyrics "I'll be wrapped around your finger" means that the Nararator will do anything for her(for the time being). The final verse, is kind of where the married woman wants the Nararator, but everything has happened already, and he is out. He will 'vanish' and she'll 'never find' him. He will turn her face to stone(Alabastor is a type of limestone i believe). The final line "Then you will find your servant is your master, and you'll be wrapped around my finger' is saying that she was basically used. Kind of long and over the top, but its the best I could do. ANd for an awesome song like this, it deserves it. Awesome song. Sting and The Police rule. |

First off, it should be said that thing song is from the motion picture Top Gun(also known as one of the best cheesy action movies of all time). It should also be said that Kenny Loggins was reluctant to do the song for that scene(you know, the one with Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer playing volleyball...shirtless), but he said someone had to write the song so he did it. Even though this seems like a highly homoerotic song, I really don't think it is. It was the 80's. Who needs meanings in your songs? Damn catchy and well crafted song if you ask me despite its overall cheesiness. |

Sting's version makes you feel like you are standing in a golden field on a warm day. His voice is like a picture flowing through you. You can feel this song so much better in the ORIGINAL version done by Sting. Beautiful. |

This is just a love song. I don't think there is a big secret meaning. It is just a simple love song, and those are usually the best. The introduction of the song starts off with some wierd sound effects and echoing, with I think sets the mood of the song. Distance... silence... calmness. The piano is gentle and sweet, adding to the already set atmopsphere. When Tom starts singing, it sounds perfect, because the reverb has given him a "can you hear me?" feel... perfect for the song. The choice of having no drums for this first verse makes it calm and sincere. As the song progresses, the bass comes in patiently, and leads into a surprisingly loud and jaggy chorus, with drums. The second verse is much like the first, except the drums and bass are added. Due to their chugging style though, it keeps the song in the same feel. Perfect. There is a calm pause in the middle of the song where a soothing piano piece is played, and then we are kicked back into the loud chorus with repeats the hook of the song until the end. For a long time. About 3 minutes! A surprise ending is the frantically rolling drums that last for about 40 seconds. The entire song is soaked in reverb and distortion, which perfectly fits the "dreamy" like feel of the song that was set in the first place with the effect. It ends the song too, because after the drum solo we hear some quiet feedback until the end of the track. The lyrics are sweet, and almost begging the other person to care for the him because he needs her. He is... lost... without her. Sorry if my review is kind of long, but thats what I like doing. I love this song and it means alot to me. Goodbye. |

This song is absolutely beautiful. Just the chords and interpicking and everything changing. Rayne's voice is just perfect, and the feel of the song is breathtaking. Although this song is about a brain tumour, it can be about any illness that is causing pain and suffering to someone. I know someone with Depression who has tried taking her life several times and this song still fits with it. It is a stunning song and the video is perfect. Its almost like, the feeling you get when something like this is happening...its just amazing. This song should have blasted this band to fame, because it is a masterpiece. |

This song is legendary. How could no one Comment? Alrite, well the song starts off with some thick and chunky guitar work from God(Eddie) and then leads into an all out rocker as the Rhythm Section joins, as Dave does a few of his trademark shouts. Roth starts "singing"(it is more like shouting on key for this part) with some slightly Busy guitar work in the background, but nothing too distracting. It leads into the Pre-Chorus where the whole band sings some backup vocals, and then leads into the Chorus. "Change" and "Unchained" are sang by all of the band members, as Eddie plays the Intro beneath it all, this time with the Rhythm Backing him up on vocals and instruments. The solo in this song isnt some of Eddie's BEST work, but it is simple and fits the song, which is fine. With some odd articulation, he makes the song kind of jolty. Another run through the Chorus leads into a small Bridge part, where Dave is shouting at someone(at the recording studio?). The "someone" shuts Roth up, and "one break" comes up. Leading back into the Chorus until the end. THe last chorus has a bit of simple(as far as Van Halen goes) soloing, and it ends off with another little lick. Not sure what the song is about, im assuming maybe about leaving a girl(ball and chain) and now he is free and wants to get back to being himself again(Hits the ground(breaks up) and starts running(back to his old self). Amazing song. Classic. |

If you didnt know, Davey was influenced by Poison and Motley Crue(believe it or not, its in an interview from 94'). Jade loves the 80's as well(Someone asked him to say what he liked about the 80's, and he said "I'd have to write you a book" or something), and his guitar work even in AFI songs shows it. Ever notice the huge, anthematic, layered vocals on alot of AFI songs? Although the Misfits(a huge AFI influence) did this too(to a small degree), AFI's Harmonies are much more similiar to that of Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, and Motley Crue. Ahh, sorry for going Nuts. AFI did an amazing cover of this song. Davey's voice is alot like Axl's too(not quite as skilled, but also not quite as whiney) and he could nail this song where all the other bands on the "Punk Goes Metal" couldnt dream of emulating Axl's voice. Jade nails the guitar Solo, and in fact, due to the better mixing, I like listening the AFI version of the Song More. The Rhythm section is tight and Hunter plays Duff's basslines almost with more feel than the original artist himself(Although it could be due to better mixing). All in all this is an amazing cover. They nail it perfectly. |
