Here’s my thoughts- First time I heard this song, I proceeded to play it on repeat all the way back to my house (Yes the one where I grew up even), and it really resonated with me. I see lots of differing views as to whether it’s about a dog, a sibling, or even a romantic partner, but I believe there’s a different overarching theme here. I believe the song isn’t necessarily about Harvey, but that Harvey represents a feeling of nostalgia, purity, and the inner child. Then this is put against this very grown up feeling of striving for and achieving success, a process of which you have to leave behind that comfort of childhood and familiarity. The character (Alex G) is out there making a name for himself, and proving he’s grown up (“success for my buddies, success for my friends, success is the only thing I understand…. I wanna prove that I got the balls”) and a thriving adult. But at the end of the day, he goes back home to where there is still reminders of his childhood, and this reminder could be a family pet or younger sibling who still has the same sense of wonder and purity that he left behind (“he doesn’t understand what big boys do”). He “gives his medals” to his family, most likely meaning showing off his pride and accomplishment, but Harvey sees in him the same little kid he always saw growing up, and that doesn’t change. Alex G’s character comes to peace with these conflicting feelings, ending it with “I love you Harvey I don’t care”, meaning that he doesn’t care if Harvey is different, or hasn’t grown up like he has, because he’s happy being the same way he always has. Anyway, that’s my opinion at least. |
