Caveat emptor...before continuing, consider first, that like most forms of great Art, the interpretation is as individual as the listener and/or l could be full of shite... Wishing Well is like much of Bob's craft, a poem. As such, or in this guise, it creates a powerful message, that for me, someone of a similar age and life experience to Bob's, is painfully clear. To clarify (or repeat), my ears hear Wishing Well in a way that someone half or twice my age might hear distinctly differently. It is a warning. A warning of the high costs of desire or of wishing for more, different, better, etc. One might go as far as to suggest that it is a criticism of a materialistic lifestyle. It begins with a description of how painful it is to have suffered some of what he then warns will be too costly. When the Wishing Well runs dry, as they always will, it leaves one broken, in tears and "screaming" to be heard. He then goes into how one reaches this point. When one wishes for things...homes and trains and the greenest of plains, i.e. greener pastures, then even when these dreams come true, then one remains where they began. This quenchless thirst leaves them forever hungry for something that can never be reached. Worse still, he continues, is that this endless desire is costly, with each wish costing a part of one's life and if not avoided or resolved, will cost one their whole life. Caution all that suffer the perspective that the grass is always greener in their neighbor’s yard. |
