You know, I (obviously) know nothing about the lord of the flies. But every time I listen to this I’m seeing Columbine and then the 10,000 (and counting) subsequent mass school shootings being portrayed and represented here.
Why does this artist need to write a song about an insignificant book or movie?
Who gives two craps about that?
The song is about mass school shootings starting with Columbine, and going all the way through the unfortunate historical reality to today.
That is very significant. The book/movie is not. |

Don’t misunderstand me: I can definitely relate with this belief. I’m hearing the same references that you are hearing. And I hope to God that they aren’t denying or refuting their faith in God through this song. It might sound like they might be doing this. But I feel it’s better to remain optimistic. |

This is one of my favorite Bob Dylan songs. And Bob Dylan is my all time favorite songwriter & musician.
I cannot for the life of me make any logical sense of these lyrics. However, one thing I can definitely say for sure: The reference to the White House being burned down by the British is an accurate account of an event which took place in 1814, during The War of 1812. James Madison (and his wife Dolley) were living there at the time. But they never resided there again after that, even though his presidency wouldn’t end until 1917 or thereabouts, when James Monroe would assume residency in the rebuilt White House.
Aside from this, despite this song being one of Dylan’s best musical efforts, the lyrics present a rather colossal mystery and enigma at best. |

I have to admit, I absolutely love REM, and I think this is one of their best songs ever.
But ……. Something kind of odd …… I was simply scrolling through the Comcast guide on my TV looking for something to watch just now. And I happened to see the unthinkable.
A movie from 1959 with this exact same title.
It doesn’t matter to me. This is and always will be one of REMs all time best tracks ever. Period. |

@[defunct:53143] It’s probably a somewhat veiled reference to what actually might be a harmonica, since I highly doubt that CCR would playing a kazoo (which is more akin to a childhood toy than an actual musical instrument). If I’m not mistaken I believe Fogerty can be heard playing a harmonica somewhere in the middle of the song, Graveyard Train. So he clearly knows how to play one. Maybe the work ‘Kalamazoo’ just happened to fit better metrically or rhythmically in this song (DotC), than the word, ‘harmonica’. |

Yours, and the other one I just read before yours (contrasting the Highlands with the Lowlands from Blonde on Blonde/suggesting the waitress might have represented Sara Lowndes. I might even take it an extra step by suggesting that both of these are factual in their own respective way. Was not Sara Lowndes the one who I initially introduced Dylan to his experience with Church and Christianity?
I can actually relate with his frustration. I went through this also, long ago. It all started out rosy ——— being welcomed with open arms into the neighborhood church. Then it wasn’t long after that, that it started becoming works based. If you weren’t there every time the doors were open, you were made to feel like you weren’t doing enough for the cause of (the) _____. As a result you should feel guilty for being such a failure. I was actually in a works-based legalistic church where you actually got the sense that if you weren’t involved in some aspect of ministry within the church, that God didn’t love you as much (as He loved those who were serving). |

I consider myself a huge fan of REM. But this song is really disappointing. It’s really crappy compared to so many others of theirs. I don’t know why it’s on this album. This song is not album material. It should never have made it out of the starting gate, IMO.
Just listen to the next song in the track sequence and you’ll see what I mean. Everybody Hurts is arguably the best song on this album. But this one right before it is a joke.
I will definitely replace it with something else, some throwaway track from the AFTP sessions.

Now, having said that …….
How dare the idiotic community for coming in here and telling other Believers that this song is some sort of “UN-CHRISTIAN-LIKE” item.
Being a Christian Band does NOT mean every single song is required to be a praise and worship item.
This song is awesome, because it is allowing the writer (presumably John Cooper) an opportunity to deal with his painful feelings and memories about the way his biological father physically, mentally and emotionally abused him growing up, by getting it all out into the open.
BTW, the song is not about a girl or a woman. It is about a young child (boy or teenager) who was being abused by his father. |

I always thought this was about young high school football players practicing in a park after dark (or near dusk).
I don’t know anymore. When I heard the opening line just now (after hearing this about a hundred times at this point), I’m more inclined to believe that he’s talking about a woman who had been awaiting her trial while she was sequestered in a prison cell. Then right before she was finally led back into the courtroom by her defense attorney, that’s where this song basically begins. She is told to put her hair back; she gets to leave now. She was found not guilty. The winners who paid were her wealthy family members who had hired the best attorneys in town to plead her case. The eleven shadows are the eleven jurors.
Kind of reminds me a little bit of Patricia Hearst. I don’t know. I could be as far away as the sun is from the Moon I suppose. |

If the song isn’t referencing child abuse then what on earth does the “howl of the rope” mean then? If this is referencing a bomb shelter then there would not have likely been such a sound? Am I correct?
The song is clearly about Stipe and his sister being frightened for their lives at the hands of their abusive father.
“It’s nine o’clock don’t try to turn it off’ ….. likely referring to the TV that he and his sister were watching downstairs in the basement, which may have been the sound of their saving grace at the time. As long as their father could hear the sound of the TV downstairs he would likely have delayed going down to beat the crap out of the two of them with whatever God-Forsaken sadistic ROPE-DERIVED inhuman pain-inflicting device that the father may have been using at the time.
As a result of my own interpretation I often feel guilty for liking this song.
The song reminds me of one by Skillet, called ‘Open Wounds’. Check it out if you’ve never heard it. |
