Goldfinger – Answers Lyrics 2 years ago
These lyrics are self-explanatory as it is in the present tense, but regardless I shall provide my
subjective interpretation to this legendary song. It seems to be about a persons struggle with their own behavior (mental illness) as well as the effect it has on their partner. For the sake of my own convenience, I will refer to the singer as (he/him) and the partner as (her/she). I'm not LGBTQ+, but if that is your gender orientation I'm positive that the song can be interpreted in that way as well. This song is about relationship struggles in general. **( (Team Avolition deserves ice cream btw!!!))**

"I searched for a cause
I climbed the highest mountain
I walked to the top
I stopped and then looked down"

He has tried to find a reason for his own mysterious behavior, until he eventually reached the point where he has exhausted all possible causes and now he is reflecting on the journey as a whole that brought him to the current mental state he is in.

"But when I stop the search
The answers always come
And when I help someone
I always help myself by helping"

Here he has discovered that not looking for a solution to his problem actively has allowed him to clearly see what his problem is. This problem is revealed in the next two lines, that he has indulged himself in too much selfishness and that, whenever he helps someone, it's for his own benefit (selfishness) rather than for altruistic reasons (selflessness).

"You tell me where your skeleton's hiding
Tell me all and I'll tell you
You think you have a real good fucking answer
A fucking answer I'll give you"

**"Skeleton in a closet" is a colloquial phrase that means "a discreditable or embarrassing fact that someone wishes to keep secret."**
This next verse is an argument with his partner over secrets he has kept in the relationship. The reason why I think this is the case is the verse that comes afterwards but I will discuss that later, this boils down to trust issues on account of the girlfriend beginning the argument (paranoia). For the first line, he turns the skeleton in a closet phrase on its head by stating that instead of asking him what his secret is (if it is that obviously revealed), his partner should instead tell him what her secret is as it is not easily revealed through standard conversation due to her own concealment. This argument concludes with him posing the deal that if she tells him every secret that she has ever kept, he will tell her his secret which makes it clear that this secret that he is hiding is extremely important and that it must not be revealed. Finally, the final two lines imply that even if she did tell all her secrets, he wouldn't believe them as it would likely all be a lie anyways and that he will instead give her a "good fucking lie" as well.

"I look toward the girls
And there I found no truth
I looked outside myself
It seemed I lost the good"

He used the relationship, and multiple others, to distract himself from his problems but it still did not help him overcome his own struggles and it likely led to many breakups because of these lies. He also tried looking at it from a different angle and he came to the conclusion that he could be completely irredeemable due to his actions.

"But when I turn my eyes
Out from my own head
That's when I realize
That I see what I'm really selling"

Despite all his struggles, if he looks at himself honestly from the perspective of another, that he tried all he could to hold his relationships together at the time and that he still has a lot to offer to his future girlfriend despite his own problems.

Hope you all enjoyed. I might be speaking into the void as the last comment was 2007, but I discovered this song again recently and instead of sharing my interpretation on Reddit I wanted to share it somewhere else as I don't like most social media including that website. Seeya, hope you have a great day.
