Ashnikko – Invitation Lyrics 2 years ago
@[Zinetha:45903] I forgot to mention, how the "I could be lickin' on a lolly / Dolled up like a dolly / Short skirt, lil' hottie" part also could be about a woman or it could be about a pre-teen girl, just like the "cruising on my bike / summertime, my t-shirt tight" part. It even says "lil' hottie", like she's petite or young. Very gross, but that's how some men would see her. I.e. a thirteen year old could easily start to rebel against her parents with strong makeup and "skimpy" clothing and then pedophilic men (and others) would see that as an invitation and call her "jail bate" or groom her, or worse.
The word choices on this song are just *chef's kiss*. Except Kodie Shane. Unless someone really cracks the code on her lyrics and explains them to the rest of the world.

Ashnikko – Invitation Lyrics 2 years ago
The song is an empowering anthem against sexual assault and objectification of the female body.

Here's my interpretation on the lyrics:

"He said he needs it or he'll die
Touching on my inner thigh"
This is about how some men try to guilt women into sleeping with them. Claiming it's a need instead of a want. Some even go as far as saying men have the right to have sex and therefore women should give them sex. Those people are called (and they call themselves) incels, or involuntary celibatists.

"Dirty seedy kinda guy
His castration would be nice"
Castration is the medical procedure of removing the testicles. The narrator is being sexually assaulted and coerced (says he needs it or he'll die, touching on her inner thigh) and has a brief thought that men like these should be castrated (so they can't use their penis in the assault) and that she feels so much anger towards him she would enjoy castrating him.

"And I'm just cruising on my bike
Summertime, my T-shirt tight"
Some men (and some women) blame the sexual comments/assault a girl or a woman receives on what she was wearing. In reality, what they wear has nothing to do with it. 100% of sexual assault is the assaulter's fault. It is perfectly normal to wear thinner and smaller clothing when it's hot outside. Also, even if she was naked, it would not be an invitation for sexual comments or assault. I would also like to point out her word choices. She's cruising on the bike instead of driving. She's on a bike rather than on a car, or jogging. My first thought is a pre-teen girl. I think it's intentional. It's supposed to make you feel grossed out by these kinds of men, to emphasize the message this song has. Also, sexual assault is rarely about sex, it's usually about control. These men want to control what a girl or a woman can or cannot wear, and if she doesn't, she "deserves" to be assaulted. Even if his clothing choices for her would make her uncomfortable (like warm, covering clothing when it's hot outside).

"He say I'm the type he like
Like I'm a biscuit he could bite"
These kinds of men also often objectify women - they either directly compare women to inanimate objects or indirectly talk about them like they're objects.

"I can't even wear my skin
Without them asking where I've been
Without them asking for a spin
This is not an invitation"
Like I said, it doesn't matter what she's wearing. A woman cannot even exist in her own body and not get comments about it. They ask her "where she's been", like has she been in a bar, drinking, which is another not-invitation to assault her, or has she been sleeping in a stranger's apartment after a one-night stand - this means she's "a slut" or "a whore" and again, this is used as an excuse to "ask her for a spin" aka ask her for sex. But even a girl or a woman existing in her own body is not an invitation.

"This is not an invitation
Fuck you mean you need it?
Fuck you mean you RSVPed?
I don't need a reason
This is not an invitation
Fuck you mean you need it?
Fuck you mean you need it?"
The same message as previously, but also stating that she doesn't need a reason to say no to you.

"I could be lickin' on a lolly
Dolled up like a dolly
Short skirt, lil' hottie
Don't you comment on my body"
A girl or a woman can eat whatever she wants, even things shaped like a penis or things that when eaten, can resemble giving a blowjob, like bananas and lollypops. She can wear as much makeup as she wants - "dolled up" or "dolly" means that someone has a ton of makeup on, to the point they kinda look like a doll. She can wear however skimpy clothing she wants, and this is still not an invitation to comment on her body.

"Put a jiggle in my titties
I can giggle like I'm silly"
Breasts don't have bones or muscle in them, they jiggle when a woman moves around, when gravity affects them. A woman can also move the rest of her body in a way that she makes her boobs jiggle. Neither of these is an invitation. A girl of a woman can laugh at your jokes and it's not an invitation.

"Call me prudish, call me bitchy
Knock you out with all that's in me"
These kinds of men call women "prudish" and "bitchy" if they refuse to have sex with them.

Kodie Shane:
"This is not an invitation
She like to talk a lot, when I pull up, can't say shit
I don't want that girl because she can't be patient
Come with me right now, we about to switch locations
So fuck with me, you need it
I ain't fucking with these boys I got my reasons
Diamonds on me just like lights they change the seasons
I think you gotta do way more if you wanna please me
Diamonds look like water on my girl, it look like Fiji
Diamonds freeze me now forever diamonds 3D
She can see me, VVS just like the TV, just me and AZ
You know it's not debating, you can't replace me"

Kodie Shane's part of this song are the only ones I don't get.
Lines 2-4 (She like to talk a lot --> switch locations) sound like they're a man talking. But I still don't understand anything except "switch locations", which is something rapists do - they kidnap a woman from location A but take her to a location B to rape her. This makes it harder for them to get caught.

Then she goes on about diamonds for the rest of the verse - Genius has pretty good explanations on them: https://genius.com/Ashnikko-invitation-lyrics
I think AZ = Ashnikko.
I think she's trying to say women are as valuable as diamonds (comparing them to inanimate objects...) or that a man has to court a woman with riches to get her (which is also problematic - woman are not objects you can buy, with money or diamonds!)
I hate her portion on this song and without it, this song would be perfect.

Ashnikko – Cry Lyrics 2 years ago
Ashnikko has told that the song is about her best friend sleeping with her ex, here's a quote from her Instagram: "This song is about my (now ex) best friend who slept with my (now ex) boyfriend behind my back. I was so heartbroken and mad at her for so long for betraying me. It wasn’t even about the boy anymore (he was dispensable lol). I write songs to help me get over things, and writing this song a year and a half ago did just that."
I think the friend and boyfriend probably started dating after this, because there's a reference to their sex life in her other song, Halloweenie.

Like many of her lyrics, these are also pretty self-explanatory once you know what they're about, but I'm gonna deep dive into them anyway. I also wrote some thoughts on the music video under the lyric interpretation.

"I'm a tough bitch, but I'm sensitive"
If you look at her other songs, you really get the image of a tough bitch, who cannot be hurt by anyone. But she is still human and has feelings, and her (ex) best friend had the power to hurt her.

"Coulda, coulda, coulda quick fuck be a sedative?
It's relative 'cause you were pushing me out to the fucking edge"
Someone on Genius wrote that she's talking about herself in the first sentence, but my first thought is the best friend... It could be interpreted as her needing some sedation, something to numb the pain and anger her friend is causing her. Or it could be interpreted as her friend is gonna need to be sedated, because she's really pushing Ash's buttons, but deep down inside, she doesn't want her friend to feel the pain she's about to cause her. This would also undermine the sex that happened, calling it "a quick fuck".
Also, my dirty mind saw the words "fucking edge" and thought of the sexual act of edging (bringing someone to the verge of climax and then stopping, repeatedly). But it doesn't make sense in the context of the song, so it's probably accidental.

"I'm about to rip all of my hair out 'cause I'm madder than I've ever been"
Have you seen Ashnikko? Her hair is a gorgeous, vivid blue color and pretty much floor-length. It's gorgeous and expensive. She must be VERY mad to rip all of it out.

"I just wanna call you, but I know I can't
Fuck a fuckin' fuckboy, fuckin' up my plans"
Who do you call if someone sleeps with your boyfriend/ex? Your best friend, so you can trash talk the bitch. But what if your best friend is the bitch..?
On Genius, someone said the next line of "fucks" she uses is called a semantic satiation, "where a word is repeated so much it starts to lose all meaning". As much as I like those fancy words describing a literal line of fucks she gives, I disagree. I think they hold multiple meanings.
First "fuck" is a verb, like "fuck him", expressing anger.
as is also the second "fuckin'", but that one is also describing how he was literally fucking (having sex with) Ash's best friend.
Fuckboy is a slang term and it means a man who only wants casual sex with multiple women and doesn't want to commit. The type who sleeps with you, but also sleeps with your friend.
And the fuckboy is fucking up aka messing up her plans to call her friend.

"Lay another finger on me, you could lose a hand
You could lose a hand, you could lose a
Bitch --"
Do not touch me or I will lose it,
but also, the last "you could lose a" is missing the word "hand" and the sentence combined with the next line becomes "you could lose a bitch" - if you sleep with your best friend's boyfriend, you could lose her. She calls herself bitch twice in this song - in the beginning and now - and I feel like this kinda softens it when she calls her best friends a bitch.

"Bitch, are you tryna make me cry?
Are you tryna make me lose it?"
Not "you are making me cry" or "you are making me lose it", but asking, are you trying to do so. Did you sleep with him just to hurt me? This isn't about the actual sex that happened, that's not the point. Ash is hurt because her friend betrayed her. What she did is irrelevant. Why she did it, the intention behind it, is relevant.

"You win some and lose some"
The best friend won him, or at least some sex with him, but lost Ash.

Grimes wrote the next parts herself, so I'm writing "Grimes" on top of all her lines to signify it's her and not Ashnikko.
Also, I think that in this song Ash is saying what she's saying out loud, and Grimes is what she is thinking but not saying out loud. The music video supports this theory, in my opinion. I wrote about the video in the end of this comment, since I have many thoughts about it.

Grimes:
"This is the winter of my discontent
Everything else is irrelevant"
The first line is a Shakespeare reference. Gloucester’s monologue from Shakespeare’s Richard III starts: "Now is the winter of our discontent" and in modern times, it is used to describe the rock bottom, the lowest point in your life.
Ash's best friend betraying her is the winter of her discontent, her rock bottom, her lowest point. Her best friend caused her to hit rock bottom and nothing else matters. He doesn't matter anymore, the best friend doesn't matter anymore. Nothing else matters when you feel like you've got nothing left. All reason and logic go out the window, as you're consumed by your own feelings.

Grimes:
"Are you trying to make me cry? (Cry)"
Even in her mind, she's thinking this same sentence. Did her friend hurt her on purpose?

"This is the winter of my discontent
This is the winter of a never end
It'll be fine if you just repent"
You feel as if this winter is never going to end, you'll never get up from this again.
But it'll be fine if the best friend shows remorse and repents. Then Ash might be able to move on and rise up again.
At this point of the song, I wasn't sure if she was being serious, though, or sarcastically saying "it's all good, just say you're sorry".

"Careful with me
I'm volatile (this could get gruesome)
Careful with me
I'm homicidal (this could get gruesome)"
English isn't my first language, and so I googled these words (volatile and homicidal) to get the full meaning of each word. What I found was:
Volatile = "liable to change rapidly and unpredictably, especially for the worse"
Homicidal = "capable of or tending towards murder; murderous"
So, neither of these words suggest that Ash IS going to be violent towards the friend, just that there is a potential in the situation for it to go that way, potential to get gruesome. But if the friend repents, they might be able to move on.

Interpretation on the music video:
It's an animated video, where a three-headed Ash has parts missing from her body. She is chasing a green-haired girl, the best friend. Best friends tries to shoot Ash with a gun, but Ash just gains power from this. The friend has one of those half-a-heart necklaces. Ash rips the friend in half. Ash almost cries a tear, but not quite. Scene cuts to Ash being inside a robot-shaped (mecha) spacecraft in space, crying her eyes out when she sees her half of the heart necklace. Scene cut to Grimes, who is a hive-minded set of fairy characters in a forest, crying even harder than Ash (tears running down her entire body). She sends a ball of light up to Ash, exploding the spacecraft. Crying Ash is floating naked in space. Huge Grimes character touches her with a finger, Ash goes through a magical girl (anime reference) transformation into the monster we saw in the beginning, and approaches the friend. Ash's body grows extra heads (Grimes' heads) that come out of her head like the snakes on Medusa's head.

Three heads could be a reference to Cerberus, the three-headed dog in Greek mythology. He guards the gates on Hell, letting people in but not out. The three heads represent the past, the present and the future: obsessing about the past, overwhelming in the present and fear of the future. (Source: http://extraordinaryconversations.com/thought-leadership/2014/4/16/the-three-headed-dog) In the video, Ash is letting her friend enter the hell she's about to unleash, but is not going to let her leave before she's done. Ash is also obsessing about the cheating that happened in the past, overwhelmed by the present feeling (the winter of her discontent) and fear about the future of the friendship.

She has parts missing from her body, which I think represent how the events have made her feel not quite herself, like she missed parts of herself in the fall of the relationship and friendship. The parts she is missing are a huge chunk of her right pelvis/stomach/back and parts of her chest (above the boobs). I think she's missing a heart, and is not missing any legs or arms she needs for chasing and ripping, but otherwise I think the parts are pretty random. She might be also missing parts because the friend has shot her before the video starts (when the cheating happened and when Ash found out).

Green hair is probably the hair color of the friend in real life as well, but it could also represent jealousy she felt towards the relationship, which caused her to go after the boyfriend? Idk, I might be reading into things, but I think it's just an awesome coincidence if something was not meant to be an artistic choice and it turns out to be one anyway.

After Ash rips the friend in half, she's literally half the woman she used to be. Just like sleeping with her friend's boyfriend made her figuratively be half the woman she used to be.

I don't know why Ash is in space (maybe this represents her mind?) but the mecha is clear - it's the touch bitch exterior we see, under which she is sensitive and crying.

Grimes is Ash's inner self, her thoughts, where she is crying even more than in her private spacecraft. Grimes is also kinda like a literal fairy godmother, looking after Ash and giving her strength. But in reality, fairies don't exist and we need to seek that strength from within by ourselves. That's how Grimes is also Ash's innermost self.

Ash floats naked, because she's exposed and vulnerable.

In some anime shows, there are these characters called magical girls. They're the main characters of the show and they are usually teenage girls in real life, but for a magical world or magical protecting purposes in the real world, they occasionally go through this transformation into a magical girl, spinning in air while they change into a more mature, more powerful version of themselves. Ash has that transformation and comes out as the Cerberus monster instead of a beautiful young woman, like in magical girl anime.

The Medusa heads are Ash's inner self, all sides of her persona, out in the open. And all of them done crying.
In modern feminism, Medusa represents female rage, which is very appropriate when you think of the song. You can read more here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medusa#Feminism

In This Moment – Whore Lyrics 2 years ago
To me, the song is about society's perception on women.

"I can be your whore / I am the dirt/dark/girl/whatever you created / I am your sinner / I am your whore / But let me tell you something baby / You love me for everything you hate me for"

Society "creates" women - not really, but they create the public perception and expectation on what a woman is supposed to be like. They control and photoshop models' bodies and the bodies of women on magazine covers to dictate what a woman's body and face are supposed to look like. They design and sell the clothes women buy, dictating what they wear. They make porn to dictate what a woman is supposed to be like, sexually. Overall, the image of a woman is very controlled, objectified and sexualized. She's a whore to the man - a sexual object he can control.
But what happens when a woman actually becomes what is expected of her and behaves like this ideal "whore" they created? She is slut shamed, she is ridiculed, she is looked down upon. Sometimes even hated and killed. "You love me for everything you hate me for."

The men expect her to be a whore who submits to them:
"You probably thought I wouldn't get this far / You thought I'd end up in the back of a car" - the last line could mean a few things - she could be sitting in the backseat, instead of driving, as in she's taking a passive, submissive wife role in life and letting the man lead her OR it could be her having sex with men in the back of their cars, like being easy/slutty, having sex with a lot of men OR my worst interpretation, where a man has killed her and she's in the trunk ("you thought I'd end up in the back of a car" is someone saying to her, that her slutty behavior is to blame for her death if she ends up dead in someone's trunk).
"You probably thought that I'd never escape / I'd be a rat in a cage, I'd be a slave to this place" - escape the expectations, maybe? If you don't know Maria and just see an image of her, someone might think she looks like the ideal woman image and is therefore a rat in a cage, a slave to the patriarchy, looking like she does for male validation. But we know she's not. She's owning and reclaiming her own sexuality. She's reclaiming the word "whore" and using that power over the men it affects. She could also be giving a voice to the ideal woman image, talking as if she is her...
"You don't know how hard I fought to survive / Waking up alone when I was left to die / And you don't know about this life I've lived / All these roads I've walked / All these tears I've bled" - She's a human being who has been through a lot, and is telling that you shouldn't try to condemn a person you don't know. "Waking up alone when I was left to die" is especially grim and makes you wonder what happened - did someone literally leave her to die?

The phrases "I'm the girl you've been thinking about / The one thing you can't live without" are interesting...
On one hand, it's a very toxic male kinda phrase, that she's exactly the ideal girl he's been picturing in his head, and the THING he can't live without - not a person, a thing. On the other hand, she continues:
"Yeah I'm the girl you've been waiting for / have you down on your knees / I'll have you begging for more"
She IS the ideal image he has in his head and Maria is reclaiming her power through that. He's going to be addicted to this perfect girl and that gives the girl immense power over the boy. This, again, could be the fictional character of the perfect woman talking, and not necessarily Maria herself.

"I'm the one that you need and fear / Now that you're hooked, it's all becoming clear / That all your judgements that you placed on me / Was a reflection of discovery / So maybe next time when you cast your stones / From the shadows of the dark unknown / You will crawl up from your hiding place / Take a look in the mirror / See the truth in your face"
You need the whore, but you should also fear the whore, since she has power over you - as we already discussed.
Before you slut shame her again (figuratively cast stones, like the Bible metaphor "he who has not sinned should cast the first stone" or something like that), especially anonymously (from the shadows of the dark unknown), you should show yourself (crawl up from your hiding place) and discover your reflection in the mirror, as in see that you are to blame why she is the way she is - you created the ideal woman to be a whore. Also, if a bunch of "whores" sleep with you, that means you also sleep with a bunch of "whores", which makes you a "whore" as well... I'm using air quotes, because I think the "whore" in the title does not refer to a literal whore, a prostitute, who sells sexual services, but more a "slutty" woman - revealing clothing, lude behavior, multiple sexual partners, etc.

That's about it. A great song about the toxic masculinity, patriarchy, feminism and the problematic term "whore" Maria decided to reclaim and use the sexual power to her benefit.
