I think I have understood this song in a more literal way. NYC is/was an entertainment capitol and as such is full of artists of all kinds trying to get a break and make it big. The song seems to me to allude to these people living the bohemian lifestyle who by necessity work at night and when everybody else is not working. These two groups of people generally do not understand each other and each side thinks they are what normal should be. The people of the night have more situational ethics. They run in the dark and are hidden away from the daytime people. They don't like conventions or rules. The daytime people are the bosses, the money people, the rule makers, and the 9 to 5ers who go to work in a traditional job and get a salary. Then there are the people who try to spill over into both worlds who see the conflicts and the hypocrisy in both sides and in themselves. All this adds up to resentments and spills over into cultural and political thinking in the Big Apple where greed, avarice, and every kind of social and sexual deviancy along with drugs and booze meld into a giant freak show day after day. And each person is trying to find a way to survive in all the craziness and there are ruthless clashes, cruelty, and competition. And in the midst of all this insanity to discover an oasis of friendship or perhaps even collaboration well, that's what it's about to me. |

Enough said about the song meaning here, but what about the BASS PLAYER on this album???? Whomever it was he was the the overlord of this entire project. He's so very melodic but powerful. Anybody know who it was?
Summer Side of Life is my favorite Lightfoot album although it was very poorly recorded and desperately needs to be remastered and remixed and sonicly salvaged however that occurs. Send the source tapes to Geoff Martin, I guess. He did a brilliant job with all the 50 year aniversary Beatles recordings. There are many of my favorite tunes on here but two of the songs capture him at the very peak of his creativity - Nous Vivons Ensemble and Cabaret. Sure wish I could compose and write like that! |

| Gordon Lightfoot – A Tree Too Weak To Stand Lyrics

I wonder if this isn't a song about the shallowness of finding lovers on the road who vest themselves in him even though he knows he's moving on? Perhaps he says whatever they want to hear to get them in bed when he knows he'll hurt them emotionally. I interpret the women as "the tree(s) too weak to stand" and they get crushed but he also gets crushed because of the long term damage he"s doing to his soul by lying time and again.
Plus he might get herpes...ha ha ha |

| Jethro Tull – Witch's Promise Lyrics

First of all, the song is written in the first person, and it seems to me the person doing the speaking is the witch himself. He (the witch) is speaking to his victim - the fool - which could be a female whose virtue and innocense he stole with beguiling charm. Only, the whole time the fool was so confident that she was was fooling the witch, she was too blind to see that the witch was on to her scheme. \n\nFor damn sure, a twisted story this is. In the first place, what is a witch\'s promise? A lie! Every promise he or she would ever make would be a lie. If you think about it, these two characters could be Hillary and the Donald. |

Life is a struggle, but it\'s all you\'ve got. Sort of like life\'s a shit sandwich, you eat it or you starve. And you sort of like it sometimes but either way, you die. |
