| Taylor Swift – Evermore Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| The title track of Taylor Swift’s album evermore starts slow and shaky, but with the voice of Bon Iver, the song picks up speed and changes tone. While some things end, we can still hope the person, opportunity, or whatever it was will come back, and we can always wait for it. Swift sings, “I close my eyes but she’s still there/ I let her steal into my melancholy heart/… Waiting by an open door/ I’ll fool myself, she’ll walk right in/ And be with me for evermore”. Swift here knows that even if she is gone, she can still wait for her again, no matter the pain it will cause. What may have been may be painful, but Swift is “Waiting here for evermore.” Perhaps the most powerful and moving song on the album, ‘evermore’ is a tribute to perseverance and love that knows no time or boundary as people wait “evermore” for their loved ones in the great beyond or in the here and now even if we know they are never coming back. This is a song of hope that we can all be reunited again in one place or another. | |
| Taylor Swift – Marjorie Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| Taylor Swift’s ‘majorie’ is the most sentimental as it was inspired by Swift’s late grandmother, Marjorie Finlay, an opera singer who encouraged her to pursue music. Swift stills like her grandmother is “still around” and still feels like she is “talking to me [her] now.” While she may be gone, Swift still feels her presence and give her advice of “Never be so polite, you forget your power/ Never wield such power, you forget to be polite.” These important words are what she remembers of her grandmother, and though she wishes she had kept even the grocery receipts she had from her, we are all touched by the sentiment of the song. We each have someone we wish we could have back even for a second, and who we wish is listening to us, so this is a nice reminder of that person during a trying holiday season. | |
| Taylor Swift – Ivy Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| ‘ivy’ is one of the more abstract songs of Taylor Swift’s evermore. It is a song of mystery and intrigue and is a slow love story between Swift and another. This tumultuous marriage has the woman in love with another, but she is married. “My pain fits in the palm of your freezing hand/Taking mine, but it’s been promised to another” shows that the woman may be in love with him, but her hand is spoken for already. No matter how she tries to fight it, “your ivy grows,” and she is now “covered in you.” This is a story of forbidden love and what happens when one woman loves another. While it may not be the right thing to do, the reality is she cannot change her heart. | |
| Taylor Swift – Coney Island Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| Taylor Swift's 'coney island' features some of the album's best callbacks as it features The National. Swift here faces a relationship at its tail end. This song features several different lines from her previous work, both verbally and in spirit. This is a nod to her previous albums and lyrics. 'coney island' has some of the most mournful lyrics of evermore. Swift laments, "Break my soul in two/ Looking for you, but you're right here/ If I can't relate to you anymore/ Then who am I related to?". She remembers all the great memories they had together but does not want her lover to face a lifetime of regret. Wondering, "What’s a lifetime of achievement?/ If I pushed you to the edge/ But you were too polite to leave me”. ‘coney island’ is a song that mourns what once was. Still, in her lover's interests, Swift is willing to let them go and not face the regret of staying with her when they become older. | |
| Taylor Swift – Dorothea Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| 'dorothea' by Taylor Swift hints toward a young, gay romance. The song mentions being younger and wonders if Dorothea ever thought about the singer again. The song laments about a time long past, and "it's never too late/ to come back to my side." Though Dorothea has moved on and found "shiny friends" since she "left town," the singer has "nothing but well wishes for" her. While Dorothea may have become famous, the singer is still hoping that she remembers what they had and hopes that she will find her way back to her. While things change, they will never forget each other, and it will be like nothing has changed. This is a story of a romance where hope is found that Dorothea will remember her young love and come back to her again. | |
| Taylor Swift – Happiness Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| If you are looking for a song about happiness, 'happiness' is not it. Taylor Swift's song is one of the saddest sounding on the album and is more of a breakup song than one about happiness. While things may have been good at one point, this eventually changed. But the singer here instead redefines happiness comes from inside, and she "found the love in me" and found herself again. No matter what, this man will not "rain on… happiness". While the relationship may be over, in the end, Swift sings about finding happiness inside herself and being happy to find herself again. This is a song to listen to after a breakup, and you need to rediscover yourself again and love yourself. Becoming stronger by loving yourself is the only way to get over the pain and find happiness again. | |
| Taylor Swift – No Body, No Crime Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| 'no body, no crime' is Taylor Swift's version of a Lifetime movie, featuring HAIM. This is a song about true crime that includes details of a devious plot to murder the husband of Este. "Este's a friend of mine/… it smells like infidelity" shows that Este's husband is cheating on her, but she lacks the evidence he did. Eventually, Este went missing, and "mistress moved in." However, she is not going to let this pass and swears, "I ain't letting up until the day I die." With her plan in motion, she sets out to solve the problem, and with "nobody," there has been "no crime." This is a song that showcases the plot we have all thought about before. If you are a fan of true crime, it may seem a bit similar to other cases you have seen before. | |
| Taylor Swift – Tolerate It Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| Taylor Swift's 'tolerate it' is a story of a tragic romance and how one woman is wondering how her partner can tolerate their relationship any more. All she can do is sit by and wonder how her partner can handle it day in and out. She sings, "I sit and watch you/…I sit and listen/…I know my love should be celebrated/ But you tolerate it". This shows how the woman in the song keeps faking it, hoping something changes, but it never does. On the other hand, she also wonders what would happen if she just left, "Took this dagger in me and removed it?/ Gain the weight of you then lose it/…But you tolerate it". While she keeps wondering what would happen if she left this relationship, she knows that her partner does not feel the same as he sits by and tolerates the situation. This is a song whose melancholic story makes you wonder how love could make you feel so numb and why the woman has not left an apparently loveless relationship. | |
| Taylor Swift – 'Tis the Damn Season Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| 'tis the damn season' is Taylor Swift's ode to reconnecting with an old flame over the holidays. This is a song of heading back to your hometown and finding the passion you once shared. As she sings, "I'm staying at my parents' house/ And the road not taken looks real good now/ And it always leads to you in my hometown," we see that she is drawn to this person because of their shared history. Even if you run away from your hometown, you can still find your way home and take the road not taken. This is the person who knows the true you as the "only soul who can tell which smiles I', fakin'," and while it may only be for the weekend, it is still worth it to be with the person in your hometown. Swift here helps us all to remember our hometown during this holiday season and remember fondly our loved ones there, particularly our old flame that may or may not still be single. | |
| Taylor Swift – Gold Rush Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| 'gold rush' is Taylor Swift's ode to a handsome man adored by women. This is a song about a woman's obsession with this man before, at the end of the song, realizing that it could never work in the real world. 'gold rush' takes place inside a single daydream where you get lost in thought, then snap back to reality. With the lyrics, "digging for gold in my neighborhood/ …all I see is a long goodbye…/I never stopped losing you", we see what the woman wished could be, held in place by her mind. The end of the song, "Gold rush it didn't used to be this way," makes us believe that though she wishes the outcome may have been different, it is not meant to be. This song is about losing yourself for a moment in a daydream and being pulled back out as fast as it started. | |
| Taylor Swift – Champagne Problems Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| Taylor Swift pulls on your heartstrings for the song' champagne problems.' This is a song that shows the emotional dynamic of Swift, along with her storytelling capabilities. You are drawn into the world of 'champagne problems' and may never find your way out. Swift's lyrics, "Your mom's ring in your pocket/ My picture in your wallet/ Your heart was glass; I dropped it/ Champagne problems," perfectly sums up the song. This is a heartbreak song and a crestfallen man who is left with shattered dreams of a denied proposal. Listening to this song makes you feel the devastation left behind and hope the song's inspiration can find some closure after such a painful, brutal rejection. | |
| Taylor Swift – Willow Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| Taylor Swift's song 'willow' is the lead single of evermore and included the release of the accompanying music video alongside the release of evermore. Swift uses the willow tree as a metaphor for life and compares it to casting a spell to make someone fall in love with you. The song uses guitar, glockenspiel, flute, and strings to create a longing that we did not know we had. Swift sings that she is hoping you "Wreck my plans, that's my man/ Life was a willow, and it bent right to your wind…/ Wherever you stray, I follow". 'willow' makes you feel nostalgic for a love that was more in your head than your heart. This song helps you overcome something you hoped to be and something you ope to be potent as a willow. | |
| Pharrell Williams – Entrepreneur Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| Pharrell Williams and Jay-Z have teamed up for a new song, “Entrepreneur”. The song focuses on systemic injustices Black people face in the United States, and how tough it is to be an entrepreneur as a person of color. “Entrepreneur” showcases the systemic disadvantages and blockages people of color face in health care education, and representation. The song opens with the lyrics “I am black ambition/ I am always whispering/ … But my will won’t listen”. While it is harder for Black entrepreneurs, they will rise to meet the challenge. The song reaches its power peak with the lyrics, “If you want to fly take the leap/ You gotta risk it all”. Through economic empowerment, marginalized communities will rise. Circulating money within your community is how people of color will continue to help one another. By supporting other Black ventures and businesses, Black people will continue to gain opportunities. “Entrepreneur” is summed up with the line” For every one Gucci, support two FUBU’s.” | |
| Drake – Laugh Now Cry Later Lyrics | 5 years ago |
|
Have you ever wondered what Drake would look like playing Drake...baby? Well, I haven’t...but that is what I got from his latest hit “Laugh Now Cry Later ft. Lil Durk. Don't be mistaken, the music is alright but it isn’t anything special. And I won’t lie, I actually liked the video - was a little flashy and a little down to earth. Without doing too much thinking or researching about what Drake has been up to lately or the deep meanings in the song, I’ll give you my raw thoughts on the song and video. (...baby) Drake loves his down-to-earth activities done with money. Wanna play basketball? (...baby) Sure, we can shoot hoops and have our ankles broken by Kevin Durant. Maybe go toss the pig-skin around ? (...baby) Let me get my boy Odell Beckham, Jr to play catch. Wanna get fit like a pro? (...baby) Lets go boxing underwater in what seems like an olympic size pool and run with what looks like a spirometer (checks how well your lungs work) like the pros do for training. Wanna go shopping? (...baby) Sure, lets have insta influencer Aggy Abby shop for a mountain of Nike products. Wanna swing a bat? (...baby) Sounds good, but it’d be better off of Nike’s headquarters in the middle of the night. Did I mention he seemingly had free reign of Nike’s facilities? (...baby) He’s doing everyday stuff we could only dream of, while still seeming to stay regular like the rest of us. This song and video is saying something, and I’m actively trying NOT to know it right now. Did his music get his message across to an average, 30-something mom who likes to remember her athletic days? I don’t know, but I know he’s been doing some heavy emotional lifting in his life and he seems to have come to a clearing with this. I’m sure he’s not done, but it was important to him to be seen as Drake but also Aubrey. Getting the sh!t knocked out of him by Marshawn Lynch mid-video (pretty funny) makes him reachable unlike other artists. When Drake is crying in his light pink, heart stitched puff jacket and he’s confronted about it, he doesn’t hide. (...baby) Bye toxic masculinity, men can have emotions - and show them too! (...baby) I sometimes laugh at Drake’s songs, but I’m okay with this one because it has a good bounce and seems to be showing personal growth for Drake (and Aubrey) which I always like! Regroup, Drake, and someone better keep some tissues for you...baby! |

| Billie Eilish – My Future Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| Billie Eilish released her new single, “My Future” today. “My Future” dropped on her brother and collaborator Finneas’ 23rd birthday. The song was written at the beginning of the quarantine. It is a song of hope, excitement, self-reflection, and self-growth. “My Future” resonates with listeners in a way it could not otherwise. The song sounds like many of Eilish’s other songs but stands apart in the lyrics. It shows how Eilish has grown up and has developed as an artist. Eilish sings about how she is growing and developing and she “can’t wait to meet her” new self and she is “in love/ but not with anybody else”. The song starts out lonely and melancholy, but as the song goes on the beat picks up and is like sunshine clearing away the clouds. “My Future” is a song that truly showcases how Eilish has developed as a person and an artist. While the pandemic continues, Eilish shows that she is capable of creating powerful music that moves both her and the world around her. | |
| Taylor Swift – Hoax Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| “hoax” is the type of heartbreak that completely guts you. This is a song that wrecks you completely leaving you empty inside with nothing left inside. This is a song where Swift feels that she is broken and beaten. This is the point where Swift reaches her breaking point and hits the bottom of the barrel. With the pandemic taking its toll on everyone, it is here where Swift’s pain is most evident. She keeps wanting to find a reason to go on, but it is hard. All the best laid plans are shattered. In the end though, all she wants is the person that has caused her so much pain. | |
| Taylor Swift – Peace Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| Swift’s penultimate track “peace” has a single repeating tone that sounds suspiciously like a heartbeat. “peace” is both loving and hesitant, with something lurking underneath the surface of the harmony. This is a high-stake love story. Swift knows that her fame is a risk to any relationship, but she feels like she herself has wrecked many of her own love conquests. “Danger is near”, and this is felt throughout the song as the heartbeat of the song never goes away. This is the thud of Swift’s heart as she worries whether her next love will ever bring her “peace”. | |
| Taylor Swift – Betty Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| “betty” is from the perspective of “James” who is explaining to “betty” rumor she might have heard from “Inez”. This is an apology from an unfaithful 17-year-old boy to the young girl who is his high school childlike. Swift uses her country roots and her southern accent rings true throughout the song. This is the first song in a while that has a twang and rustic guitar. This is a song that people can sing along to and is a highlight to her older musical style. | |
| Taylor Swift – Epiphany Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| “epiphany” is a song that feature her grandfather Dean. With the lyrics, “landing at Guadalcanal in 1942” and “Keep your helmet, keep you life, son/Just a flesh wound, here’s your rifle/Crawling up the beaches now”, these are references to World War II where he fought. This is a song that haunts you and you can feel the spirits in the room with you. This is a song from another’s perspective and something that most people today will never understand. This is Swift’s ode to her grandfather’s experiences and try to commemorate his service in the best way she can. | |
| Taylor Swift – Mad Woman Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| Swift uses this song to reference her battle over her album masters. This is where Swift means business. With the lyrics, “What did you think I’d say to that? Does a scorpion sting when fighting back?”, Swift is here to stand here ground and fight back. This is the powerful piano ballad we are looking for and the rage anthem we come to expect with a hit Swift song. This is a song that Swift sings through gritted teeth. “mad woman” shows how Swift is portrayed like she is mad by the men in her life, but she will not sit by and let the words thrown at her keep her down for long. | |
| Taylor Swift – Invisible String Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| “invisible string” is a distant song that is hazier with a simple background beat and harmonics from Swift. Swift here sees an invisible thread between her and her partner. Over time, their paths cross again and again. Eventually, this thread becomes entangled. With the words, “Wool to brave the seasons/One single thread of gold/Tied me to you”, this is the invisible thread that shows the unique and valuable connection between them. In the end when paths continue to meet again and again, there is an evitable connection. | |
| Taylor Swift – Illicit Affairs Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| This is one of the songs that Swift has mentioned as a teenage love triangle. This song is from the point of view of the girl who the boy cheated with. “illicit affairs” is a song of how an affair and lying can kill you “a million little times”. This is a song that shows the attraction of cheating without the moral superiority found in many other songs. “illicit affairs” is a pensive song where the girl knows she was the other girl, but she cannot reason why to continue the relationship. She knows what has happened, and she wants no part of it. | |
| Taylor Swift – This Is Me Trying Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| “this is me trying” is a song that offers insight into Swift’s new reality in the pandemic. Swift “…had the shiniest wheels, now they’re rusting”. What was once shiny and new is now old. Like the rest of us, Swift shows that she is just as over the pandemic as we are, but it is still ongoing. We cannot give up, but we are all fed up. We will continue to try and do our best, and at this point it is the best we all can do. | |
| Taylor Swift – August Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| Swift in this song examines what is like to lose someone that was never really yours from the beginning. “August slipped away into a moment in time/’Cause it was never mine”, shows how something can be lost without really every having you be a part of it. This is a song that explores Swift’s deepest corners of her mind. This song is one of the most influenced by the pandemic as her memories dissociate. It is what she is trying to get back, but never will. | |
| Taylor Swift – Seven Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| This is a song about how innocent childhood friendship is. This is a song of remembering how innocent childhood is and how imaginative. It is an ode to a time when everything was pure and untouched. This is a song of Swift’s nostalgia for childhood. This is one of the more emotional songs on the album. While it is a sweet, simple song, the feelings of Swift’s youth being ripped away are palpable. | |
| Taylor Swift – Mirrorball Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| “mirrorball” is a song about someone having many different sides to them. No one sees every side of the person, but only what they want to see. Though Swift sings, “I’m a mirrorball/I’ll show you every version of yourself tonight”, this only showcases that she is trying to show you only what you want to see. While her gaze is only on you, she is “Shining just for you”. This is how Swift needs to be so many versions of herself. The person that the public, her friends, and her family knows. | |
| Taylor Swift – My Tears Ricochet Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| This was the first song Swift wrote for the album. She also wrote the song alone. This the most heartfelt ballad on the album. “my tears ricochet” opens only with haunting chords, and Swift’s simple voice rings true throughout the song. Swift sings “And if I’m dead to you, why are you at the wake?”. This simple lyric shows the powerful nature of the song. The loss, the sadness, and the heartbreak are palpable in this song. With her own “death” she was hoping to be free, but the person she left is still there looking for her waiting. Swift wonders how that can be and what right her love has after leaving her. | |
| Taylor Swift – Exile Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| “exile” features Bon Iver. The song opens with Bon Iver’s deep voice. This is one of the most powerful and melancholic lyrics on the album. Iver and Swift in perfect unison and harmony deliver a ballad that shows the end of an era. Iver’s power lyrics, “I think I’ve seen this film before/ And I didn’t like the end”, shows that the end of a love story is near. It is the end of a relationship fraught with problems, but though it is ending both do not want “exile”. | |
| Taylor Swift – The Last Great American Dynasty Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| Swift references her own home in Watch Hill, Rhode Island. This is a song about home and trying to understand where Swift comes from. She mentions the singer’s home previous home, composer Rebekah Harness. She died in 1982. The passing of the “last great American dynasty” is an ode to Swift’s own origin and the story of her home. It is the song of a girl reminiscing on her roots. The chords even hint at longing with its slow and methodical progression. | |
| Taylor Swift – Cardigan Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| “cardigan” is an ode to another lost love and romance. Young love is imprinted onto your mind with this track. This is the type of love that leaves its mark long after it is gone. With Swift’s lyrics, “And when I felt like when I was an old cardigan/Under someone’s bed/ You put me on and said I was your favorite”. Love in this song fades with time, but old things are still familiar and once upon a time you loved this person. This is a love ballad that shows how love changes over time and the longing of what once was. | |
| Taylor Swift – The 1 Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| “the 1” opens with a loud piano chord that rings through your ears. It is a song that sets the tone of the album as it is melancholic and longing of what could have been. Swift here reflects on what could have been with a lost love. If only the one had not slipped away from here. Here she wonders if only one thing had been different would they have still been together. The most profound lyric is “But we were something, don’t you think so?”. | |
| Kid Cudi – The Adventures Of Moon Man & Slim Shady Lyrics | 5 years ago |
|
The song is about tribulations that come in our way as you go through life. All that we face, including huge authority figures trying to help, undermine, and sometimes enforce what they think is right upon us. Sometimes the decision is taken out of their hands by natural pandemics. Other cases, it is the public and most importantly, people who have identified their weaknesses years ago, rehab’ and now, it’s all good. He is figuring out a new plan. He says there is nothing that can beat time, but he is hoping that time will change it all, and he will be the first one to do it. There is nothing more inspiring than having a hero figure in this life. No matter what people throw at you, you get to fight back and ascertain your position. Stand tall and protect yourself, don’t mingle with the wrong crowds as you will find yourself in a ‘fuckin’ casket from coughin’. The song fights for the rights of the few and reminds officers of the law that their goal is to protect and not harm. They plead to be heard before the harmer comes down. He implores that they work together against the common enemy and not against one another as it creates panic, spreading like wildfire. The solemn note in the song endears many, but the rap quality is off the charts. |

| Juice WRLD – Come & Go Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| Juice WRLD has melded his pop-punk with Marshmello’s EDM style to produce a new track, “Come and Go”. The track will appear on Juice WRLD’s first posthumous album, Legends Never Die, that is dropping July 10th. “Come and Go” shows how Juice WRLD has evolved as an artist and is trying to be a better man. This is showcased by the use of guitar pushed to the brim with the drumbeat laid behind. At the drop of the song, Juice WRLD sings “I don’t wanna ruin this one/ This type of love don’t always come and go”. The drop shows how Juice WRLD has evolved as an artist, even posthumously. Marshmello highlights Juice WRLD’s work as a tribute to the great artist he was and stated, “He is one of them most talented people I have ever met.” While Juice WRLD may be gone, his music continues to evolve and shows how great and diverse an artist he truly is and was. | |
| Juice WRLD – Life's a Mess Lyrics | 5 years ago |
|
This song shares the struggle of loneliness. It’s a portrayal of the search to find that person who brings life and color to a world full of pain and hardships. The desire to share our lives and experiences with another person is something that everyone has felt. We all have a desire to be seen, to be heard. It hurts when the person who we thought cared about us walks away. But if we keep on searching, eventually we will be able to find someone who fits us perfectly. All the pain, all the setbacks, they shape us into who we are. I think that the artist wants to show us that there is someone out there for us. To give us hope to keep on searching. Someone will love all the broken pieces that life as shattered. That person will see beauty and light in what we can’t. In return, we will do that same thing for them. Love like that is a two-way street. It needs both people to search and to try and find that perfect fit. Life gets messy and we all make mistakes and fall. Its lonely and discouraging. But beauty is there even in the darkness. This song is a beautiful take on love and the journey to find it. Writing a song like this takes understanding and experience. It unites us all and gives hope during the journey. |

| Jason Derulo – Savage Love Lyrics | 5 years ago |
|
Jason Derulo’s Savage Love is alluring and the lyrics bring tears of pity and joy for the subject at hand. The guy tries to tell his story and the woman he loves but who does not love him back. He keeps repeating that he would welcome him back even if she is just using him to get back at her former lover. To me, the story is an everyday life reality. Getting a heartbreak, trying to hurt each other in return is an experience every one person in five has undergone. Most of the time, we never let go and we keep trying to impress, go back and the repercussions are what Jason clearly depicts. ‘We start using one another.’ However, as the chorus goes, that isn’t always the case. Being ‘madly in love’ or what he calls ‘Savage Love’ opens your eyes to the lies and the cheats. It still blinds you to wanting the same person regardless of the knowledge that they are not into you! It’s a pity but it is life and I for one, are proud of the song and absolutely love it! |

| Kanye West – Wash Us in the Blood Lyrics | 5 years ago |
|
Kanye West’s new song, Wash Us in the Blood featuring Travis Scott gives vibes that bring us back to the yeezus days. What’s different about it is that it’s a lot more spiritual or holy as some may say. His loyal fanbase is absolutely loving it. To them, this song gives hope that old Kanye is still in there. The mashup between Yeezuz and Jesus is iconic and brought many people back to a different era. The release of this song was Kanye’s first statement of the movement for racial justice and a lot of other problems happening in America right now. He refers back to gospel samples as he expresses his opinion on things like the death penalty and how it contradicts the sixth commandment “Thou shalt not kill”. In my opinion, this song is a smooth mashup of Kanye’s old form along with his newfound faith, politics, and big problems going on in this world right now. It is a motivational boilerplate that could open up the eyes of many listeners to what is going on. |

| Justin Bieber – At Least for Now Lyrics | 5 years ago |
|
The singer wants their partner to be more intimate again with them, giving them many open opportunities to do so. However, frustration also comes through when they bitterly talk about the unfairness of their partner’s behavior. They’re taking the relationship one day at a time (“One finger at a time, I turn the pages, yeah”). However, they’re losing hope with every one, alternating between that frustration and love, intimacy and distance, seemingly in an attempt to induce jealousy. The “right leg crossed” could symbolize the partner’s closed-off attitude. The camera on the couch, a reminder of the couple’s past, a piece of nostalgia haunting the singer as they occupy the same space as their partner. They are desperately trying to get them to connect and see how much the singer loves the, though they also openly admit to their sins within the relationship (“stripes on my shirt’). The partner sipping champagne could symbolize their celebration of their distance, while his grief is reflected in his consumption of red wine. They now that the situation isn’t sustainable, but they’re willing to keep it going for a while longer. |

| Beyoncé – Black Parade Lyrics | 5 years ago |
|
On June 19th, also known as the holiday Junteenth, Beyoncé dropped BLACK PARADE, her newest song that vividly talks about black pride and the importance of black heritage and culture. After listening to the song once, I couldn’t think of a better day to drop the song than Junteenth as the topic fits hand-to-hand with the day of celebration. The Beyhive, as she likes to call her fanbase, couldn’t hold in their excitement as Beyoncé sings about her hometown, African roots, and hints of her womanhood in her new song. Throughout the song, she uses words such as “Baobab” which is a sub-saharan tree in Africa. A line after that, she sings “Ankh charm on gold chains, with my Oshun energy, oh. Drip all on me, woo, Ankh or the Dashiki print” which contain words that are unfamiliar to those that don’t know much about Africa. Ankh refers to an ancient symbol from Egypt, Oshun is one of the Orisha goddesses from Nigeria, and Dashiki refers to a colorful African shirt. While rhyming and flowing, she puts together words that can be linked back to African culture which is creative- she could’ve just said the word “tree” instead of the specific tree of Baobab or taken the words “Ankh” and “Oshun” out of the sentence, but she decided to use them to make her audience want to look up what those words mean and why they’re important to the African culture. This effort shows her emotions and how she feels about her true roots from Africa. All around the song, from the chorus to different verses, items that lead to the African culture can be found hidden within sentences- this is important because there aren’t that many songs out there today sung by A-list celebrities that mention anything from the African culture. For Beyoncé to be singing about her womanhood and her roots from Africa is inspirational to many that are from Africa and that don’t have a favorite singer that represents their home country and origin. Many are thankful and happy that Beyoncé has, yet again, blown the minds of many by combining current social issues, national issues, and worldwide issues- such as COVID-19, police brutality protests, and woman’s rights’ movements- into a catchy song that speaks “a thousand words” in just a couple of minutes. |

| XXXTENTACION – Skin Lyrics | 5 years ago |
|
The song “Skin” by the late XXXtentacion was one that stood out to me as something interesting. It tells the story of a female in an abusive relationship and the speaker in the first verse seems to be a friend or loved one who feels they have to take care of this abuser. It starts right in the first two lines when the speaker of the song says, “There she was, with the blade in her hand/Scars on her skin replace the kiss of a man.” To me that sounds like the loved one has walked in to find the girl after a physical altercation with her abusive significant other clutching a blade for safety after being beaten. Then it goes on to say, “Regret fills her heart as her love leaves her home/She's learned to be passive, but such is a loss/Accepting defeat when I foreclose the cost/For her, this was needed to be rid of the pain/You play the victim and I'll play insane,” which, to me, sounds like after reflecting on her past and this situation, she knows what the next course of action has to be. Which is basically that this abusive person needs to die. They even go as far as to think of a way to have her get away with it. She would play the victim who just lost her loving boyfriend and the speaker would plead insanity hopefully for a lesser sentence, if they got caught. The song then seems to switch perspectives in the second verse when it says, “Offense or defense, passive or violent/I'll cut my wrists 'til my heartbeat is silent/With the shell in my hand, I'm equipped with the pump/Shots in her body until she is a stump” This to me sounds like the perspective of the woman in the relationship getting the breaking point and saying she is going to shoot him and then kill herself. The next verse says, “Stomp out that fucker, his death will be slow/You made me do this, just as far as you know/If you don't exist, then my pain can be rid/So I gut the fucker then eat like a pig.” As violent as this imagery is you cannot ignore the raw emotion behind the sentiment. After being abused time and time again she has been forced to make him feel the same pain that he put upon her. The song then goes on to repeat the second verse, which to me represents the back and forth battle both mentally and physically during this altercation. Ultimately, it ends with the line “I am the heart marksman,” which to me is a great play on words. It makes a play on cupid and his love arrows when, in reality, he probably just means they shot him in the chest. |

| Lady GaGa – Sour Candy Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| Returning to her roots, Lady Gaga’s new song, Sour Candy, is set to be a hit. Lady Gaga dropped Sour Candy from her upcoming album Chromatica, and her Little Monsters have gone crazy over the track. Sour Candy was initially to be released April 10th, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was set to drop May 28th instead. Sour Candy rings true to her earlier hits like Bad Romance and Poker Face. Her new single will be a staple in any DJ’s arsenal and will be sure to hit the club floors as soon as the doors reopen. The unmistakable beat combined with Lady Gaga’s sultry voice will make Sour Candy an unforgettable tune. The collaboration features the super popular K-pop group Blackpink. Blackpink’s rapping make the opening lines of the song a little sour to the ear, but as the sourness is removed with the candy, so does Lady Gaga’s sweet voice ring through. The next time you have a sweet tooth, pick up some Sour Candy, you will not want to miss this beat! | |
| Billie Eilish – No Time To Die Lyrics | 5 years ago |
|
“No Time to Die” just Killed Me. The next Bond film coming out is Daniel Craig’s fifth and final outing as the most famous spy. It shares its title with Billie Eilish’s offering for the theme song “No Time to Die.” Though the basics are known about the film with the trailer that dropped in December, the theme song was just released. Multi-grammy winner Billie Eilish co-wrote the song with her brother and main collaborator Finneas and lent her soulful and haunting voice to the lyrics. If the combination of Billie Eilish and James Bond has you scratching your head, you are not alone. Many people were having a hard time understanding the pairing - then Eilish dropped the song. As the song opens and the typical gentle musical intro leads into Eilish’s opening, “I should have known/I’d leave alone/Just goes to show/That the blood you bleed is just the blood you own” 007, shaken martinis and the ultimate ladies man are not the things that pop into your head. In Eilish’s genius way though, she leads you there. Fans of the movie series will hear familiar strands of music underlying with the rest of the song, kicking in as the chorus plays “That I’d fallen for a lie/You were never on my side/Fool me once/Fool me twice/Are you death or paradise?/Now you’ll never see me cry/There’s just no time to die.” As the song plays, it encompasses everything Eilish is known for - beautiful composition and lyrics, gut-wrenching emotion and a melody that will stay with you long after the music stops playing. Where it truly hits you that Eilish is singing for the heart of an older and exhausted retired MI6 agent is in the second verse “I let it burn/You're no longer my concern, mmm/Faces from my past return/Another lesson yet to learn.” Yes - I imagine that a man who has faced down every enemy you can imagine, lost loved ones, given up his entire everything to make the world a better place would be emotionally spent. Anyone who has ever felt the pressing in of loneliness as they simply try to live will have found their own personal theme song upon listening to “No Time to Die.” Not only do the words nail how isolation feels, but the melody weaving together with a slowed-down version of the well-known Bond chimes is also truly on of the most haunting and revealing pieces of music released in a long time. You can feel this song in your bones, not just hear the words. The song can take you to places you didn’t even know you could go when listening to a James Bond theme song. Instead of imagining death-defying stunts, eye-popping effects and beautiful people in bathing suits, you truly feel the loneliness of this man for the first time. The only thing he knows is sacrifice, living alone. The past haunts him and no other song can make you feel it the way this one does. Every past person, every past mistake, each one is with him every day. With her ability to reach into you and pull out all the feels, Billie Eilish “No Time to Die” does so about one of the most enduring fictional characters ever created. It is clear with this theme song, the Bond franchise will never be the same - and neither will anyone who truly listens to, not just hears, this song. |

| Halsey – You Should Be Sad Lyrics | 5 years ago |
|
I think it’s pretty obvious by the title that You Should be Sad is a breakup song. Halsey had a highly-publicized relationship with G-Eazy and I think this is her goodbye anthem to him. In the lyrics she says she’s not angry, but I don’t think that’s true. She says he’s not half the man he thinks he is and she’s happy she got away from him. “I’m so glad I never had a baby with you” is a particularly strong lyric that resonated with me because I have felt like that after a recent breakup as well. You can’t fill the hole inside of you with money, girls and cars is an obvious shot at G-Eazy’s fast, Hollywood lifestyle. I too relate to that in my recent relationship, I was dating someone with money, who was always looking for the next shiny object. After a song full of shots at G-Eazy, Halsey ends the song with “you should be sad.” When you see the title of the song and start listening, I thought it was going to be about an ex-boyfriend not caring they broke up, but after listening to the lyrics, I think it goes deeper than that. I think it means he should feel sad for his lifestyle choices and that he let a real relationship go, something again that I too have felt. She also talks about trying to put a broken man together and now he should be sad because he’s on his own to cope with his issues. |

| Halsey – Alanis’ Interlude Lyrics | 5 years ago |
|
It seems appropriate that the song “Alanis’ Interlude” from Halsey’s new album Manic, stirs memories of a certain hit song from Alanis herself nearly 25 years ago. No, “You Oughta Know” tackles different situations from “Alanis’ Interlude”, but the female empowerment element is definitely there. “Alanis’ Interlude” is full of innuendo and language that you should know are not safe for work. Halsey, and Alanis, as she is credited top songwriting credit for this song, delve into a world of high school same-gender attraction and gender-bending roles. But to me, the underlying point is that she doesn’t want any labels attached to it. She sings “Cause he is, she is her/And her and he are love/ Towering all these labels.” For me personally the chorus comes off a bit cringey. I know I will be in the minority of this, but the straightforward crudeness and explicitness of some of the lyrics left me feeling a bit blah about the song. Being vulgar doesn’t equate to being empowered and bold. |
