Coldplay – Violet Hill Lyrics 4 years ago
I believe this song could be the over throwing of the monarchy. Monarchy is a big theme present in Viva La Vida and the Death of All his Friends. I believe the line "From the windows they were watching | while we froze down below" could be an interpretation of the King and Queen; being thrown into a frozen lake; as the setting does talk about snow. The people watching, could be their kids or loyal advisors/maids of the household.
"Carnival of idiots on show" could be the perception that the public had of the royal family, so that's how they decided to overthrow the monarchy.
"And the fog became God" could be a line referring to the fact that monarchs are meant to represent God.
"Who the captain of some sinking ship" could be referring to the fact that the King would be failing his Kingdom; so yet again the civilians decided to over-rule him for the better.
Just a thought.

Sorry to say, Arthur Davies stated that he thought of the lyrics of this song when he was at a topless beach in NSW Aus. When he went on the beach he actually thought of an 'adult' film that he saw in NYC. At that moment a lady was coming towards him, he lost his train of thought and didn't know what to look at. Either her breasts or her bright blue eyes. Luckily he looked at her eyes and thought of the song.

While people interpret it in different ways, this is just how Davies made and interpreted his own song.

Empire of the Sun – We Are the People Lyrics 5 years ago
To me most of the speaking, and emotional thoughts came from the chorus. "I can't do well when I think you're gonna leave me, but I know I try, are you gonna leave me now, cant you be believing now." This gives me the story, of lets say to best friends. One of them, to me, has severe anxiety, or fear of death/loss. So this best friend, is constantly paranoid that he/she is going to lose one of the most significant people in their lives. So he/she says to their best friend, "I cant do well without you, especially if I think you're going to leave me. I know I try to get these stupid questions and overthought thoughts out of my head. But are you going to leave me, can't you believe me?" Hence giving the chorus. Someone is so afraid they're going to lose the one person they love so much in this world, but yet with this same love, they're slowly pushing them away...
