I think this song is Gavin wishing he wasn\'t bi/didn\'t have to hide because he\'s famous.. but really when people don\'t feel safe coming out it\'s almost always because of negative conditioning during childhood. In their mind, coming out = annihalation.\n\n/\n/\n\n\nfirst verse is the struggle of carrying internalized homophobia/biphobia, gaslighting yourself about your own sexuality, wishing you could just be straight... \n\n/\n/\n\nHe\'s confused how strong his attractions for women are. Lots of bi/gay guys go through this, usually because they were conditioned to pursue women by external forces rather than purely external desires. Thus, there\'s a risk that I\'m exaggerating my attraction to them in order to minimize my homoeroticism. \n\n/\n/\n\n"And it never seems enough" basically implies that he might prefer men sexually/romantically. \n\n/\n/\n\n"Splinter left focus right" is his attempt to suppress/shatter/ruin his homoeroticism in favor of heterosexuality.. Gay/bi people are more likely to be left-handed, and similarly there\'s been a long tradition of prejudice against left-handers. \n\n\n\nI think the whole "mortal" part is him being a guy, and feeling existential terror because growing up being gay was associated with being hate-crimed or otherwise bad outcome. By convincing himself he\'s straight he has a false sense of security, as there are people who wish violence on non-heterosexuals.. |

I think this is about Gavin\'s ex-boyfriend Pete Robinson (aka Marilyn), or just about another ex-male lover. Gavin is essentially calling himself out for allowing internalized homo/biphobia to cause him to act this way.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n"A simple prop to occupy my time" is Gavin discounting how important this person is to them. \r\n\r\n <br />\r\n\r\nFire can be associated with sexuality but also homosexuality (flaming homosexual, the "sun" will "come out") \r\n\r\n\r\nFinally, "so far away from home and I feel fine" is his cognitive dissonance because this person felt like home... if he is fine it\'s really Fearful, Insecure, Neurotic, Emotional. \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nWon\'t post links but Gavin denied the significance of the relationship with Pete the whole time he was married to Gwen Stefani. After their divorce he admitted they were boyfriends/lovers. This song seems like Gavin\'s guilty conscience. \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nI went through something similar myself. I see similar shame/pride/denial themes in Glycerine, Swallowed, Communicator, Straight No Chaser. |

This song shows an unhealed abandonment wound poisoning the singer\\\'s life and relationships. A common one is growing up receiving a lot of abuse/neglect from family. The experience was so acutely painful and shockingly unexpected that the singer rationalized that "Nothing Lasts Forever" as a simple fact rather than being able to understand they were victimized (which a parent who is consistently abusive would deny/gaslight to no end).\n\n-\n\n The first stanza they meet someone but they unhealthily idealize the other person and relationship immediately. They "need to live in dreams today" because they have lived their life largely avoiding intimacy, and thus to "change" they do the (bi)polar opposite and idealize "the relationship" like a fairytale. \n\n-\n\n"And I want more than I can get"... in other words, they will leave me and I\'ll probably never recover. So like clockwork they dissociate from the pain of this uncomfortable "truth". Notably they "forget" succesfully by "performing" but it\'s all fueled by feelings of inadequacy.\n\n-\n\nThey self-sacrifice in "love" to th e point of anonynmity. They "hide" the fact that they carry a sense of worthlessness, living in fear that they will betray themselves... but of course they lash out in insecurity and are always "on their knees" apologizing and agonizing despair at awareness with lack of faith/guidance. Speaking of which, the chorus: This time they can\'t forget that "Nothing ever lasts forever", which could represent a significant period of regression or depression into self-abandonment ("why bother?").\n\n-\n\nIf this is a relationship, then this verse is the last chance. Frustrated, their beloved repays them with less-clear communication.. but more likely it\'s very clear but the singer can\'t see through his own blinders. They even see them "running in" toward them but still feel like the rug will still be pulled out from under them. \n\n-\n\nChorus comes again and they dissociate, letting the beloved down and prompting the end of the relationship as he knew it.. The singer has a chance to face his demons, likely regretting having avoided his issues instead of facing them. |

This song is about shows an unhealed betrayal wound poisoning the singer\'s life and relationships. @[criminal_incognito:40230] last line could also be a double of "right", as in "upright" or "he was upside down but he righted himself". First layer is the chest metaphor of tipping the king over at defeat. There\'s also the layers of height. \r\n\r\nThis just seems like her lion\'s roar for having probably been like her own worst enemy in her own mind and seeing herself as nothing or a pawn, but have found a way to conquer their patterns.\r\n\r\nNot that it needs to be said but it certainly helped finding massive financial success. Of course that has it\'s challenges but generally if you can hold onto your soul in the arts you\'re going to be OK in the end. |

This song is relatable of anyone who ever courted/dated a trauma survivor and didn\'t realize what they were in for. In the extreme, it can be like the relationship was never what it seemed to be and the other person\'s behavior makes no apparent sense. Effectively, the person doesn\'t know how to be in a relationship but DO know how to obsess over a person and efffectively that\'s how their time is structured, with lots of overanalyzing word choice and etc.\n\n\n\nLet\'s go line-by-line. First some assumptions that I\'ll prove:\n\n\nSinger (Nina) has worse self-esteem than their paramour ("Ricky") and they\'re in a "will-they-or-won\'t-they" non-labeled but "real"-ish relationship. Tragic case of self-sabotage and miscommunication/spiral of silence. Nina is likeable and loveable but just can\'t accept/believe it. This is key.\n\nFirst verse. Nina is really wondering if it\'d be possible for someone "like her" to date someone "like him".. basically he\'s higher class in some way and has all the confidences/benefits that come with that. Because of that, he sees the world fundamentally different than a child who experienced home insecurity, abuse etc... so they could never be together.. but Nina is imagining if she had been fortunate enough to have the $$$ to have grown into that person. \n\n\nNonetheless, lines 3-4 show how Ricky doesn\'t see her as inferior to some other potential friend/date even if she is different. I think what happened is that they flirted in some small way, with Nina tripping on her words and being adorable. Ricky playfully calls out their shyness while trying to assure them that they are enjoying and want to continue. Nina has probably experienced someone pretending to be their friend in order to get something from them and thus is overly-paranoid about it happening again. Nina is working on this and eventually realizes that they are being overly-cautious but the moment has already passed and they act like nothing happened. \n\n\nVerse 2 is all about HOW Nina\'s dysfunction works. Many abused children develop complex beliefs/patterns in order to make sense of their abuse. The mental gymnastics get very elaborate! For a abuse survivor, being shown mature love and regard can be painful as it makes one realize that they had no idea what love felt like. \n\n\nWith that in mind, Nina simply must ignore "what\'s real", AKA the genuine love and appreciation Ricky demonstrates, because acknowledging that she is worthy of it and always was would destroy her current identity/belief system. \n\n\nVerse 3 is Nina essentially trying to ignore the fact that she is at war with herself. She is spending more time with the guy under some other pretense and acts like she doesn\'t know that they\'ve been flirting the whole time. |

This song is about a likely-doomed romantic relationship between two people of the same sex. "Gabriel" has been comfortable with their sexuality for some time but has his own baggage, while the singer "Rick" has struggled with accepting themselves and valuing themselves.. They fall in love but can\'t act on their feelings due to the engrained belief that it is "not safe". \n\n"I try to remember a kiss and I only get sorrow"..\n\nThe singer is reevaluating their past given these "new" gay feelings for Gabriel. They are facepalming/cringing at how they unknowingly led on people and also mourning that they won\'t get to kiss those guys.\n\n"and yesterday\'s faded away\nnow there\'s only tomorrow\nand everything passes and changes\nand comes to an end i know\nbut nothing is written but old news\nagain and again"\n\nEven though they are more aware now, he repeats old patterns of toying with/pushing guys away in order to "protect" himself. There is part that wants to believe that their relationship is "real" and that he is "good enough" for more than just a roll in the hay, but an inner skeptic who only sees the bad, like Morrisey\'s "Yes I Am Blind", which is about a similar failed newbie relationship and what the newbie learns from it.\n\n\n"now i see a face in your eyes\nbut you don\'t remember my name\nwe\'re always a step out of time\nnow ain\'t that a shame\nand you\'ve been alone for too long\nand nobody cries\nif you want to see all of my tears\ntake a look in your eyes"\n\nIMO, both parties think that the other person has much higher self-esteem and fears being used/played/hurt. Both people put up false fronts due to indirect communication and assumptions. Gabriel has been single for a long time and Rick kind of feels bad about that, but deeper down he\'s sad that he was closeted against his will and has internalized homophobia that tells him that Gabriel is just using him.. The last line refers to the mix of love-and-hate, hope-and-regret, for how Rick has treated Gabriel. He realizes that he essentially sabotaged the relationship many times, only for Gabriel to forgive him... \n\ni know that it\'s true\n"believe it or not\nbut angels don\'t cry\ni know that it\'s true\nthere\'s too many tears\nbut angels don\'t cry"\n\nDeep down, he knows how he feels, even if he sometimes lies to himself. The difference between feeling love in your heart and denial in your throat. Basically his defense mechanisms are kicking in and they are strong.\n\n"i could walk away\nor i could walk on by\nor make it all come true\nor say it\'s all a lie\nthere\'s no more tears\nwhen you\'re out of time\nand i might fade away tonight\nif you close your eyes"\n\nThis is it. It\'s now or never. He can blow it off like it\'s nothing and "just friends" or actually make a move... Part of him acknowledges that it\'s a waste of time to cry when you have the opportunity to act, referring back to the first line of the song. He doesn\'t want to repeat the cycle.\n\nBut the last line reveals his heart: he still fears Rick ultimately rejecting him and ultimately having "tricked him" in a game that was "rigged from the start". |

The song is about someone pursuing a person with (perhaps covert) low self-esteem and probably who falls under BPD/CPTSD umbrella.. oh the tortured artists and lovers! I make a lot of "guesses" but there is a lot of overlap with other songs by CT.\n\nWhen he said, \'You are full of love\' \nShe fell down into this dirty mess \nSome people see me laugh and tell us,\n\'It\'s wrong to make fun of me\'\n\nLine 1 is said privately between the two and is just him being open that he admires her as a person and wants to continue to know them., but "she" can\'t accept the compliment/attention healthily because EVERYTHING seems like a red flag due to past abuse, so now any kind of attention is highly suspicious and so she self-sabotages as a protective mechanism, likely doubting the presumably "platonic explorations" for some sort of "sexual seduction countdown plan"...\n\nLine 3-4 characterize the singer\'s lack of boundaries. Someone has witnessed the singer "passively" laughing along at a jab/joke made at their own expense and is reminding the singer to respect themselves. Maybe the joker was someone who has a lot of "influence" over the singer and subtly shames them in front of their crush?\n\nDue to past abuse, this person can\'t really function in a relationship healthily. It\'s the cliche of a person who thinks they have to "trick" the other person into a romantic relationship. At the end of the day the guy is crazy for "her" but the singer is just cycling through their old coping mechanisms that were great for surviving abusive jerks but highly confusing for this wonderful guy. Thus, the "but you don\'t want, want my hand".. conveniently ignoring all the attention they are receiving from them. It\'s an overly dramatic "will they or won\'t they" entirely due to low self-esteem. \n\nThe part about "proving" refers to how people with relationship trauma may need excessive levels of reassurance to even begin to "trust", often secretly testing their partner\'s "loyalty" by "acting out". \n\nOne song sung from the other person\'s perspective is Moody Blue as sung by Elvis Presley. Much more straightforrward than CT of course. \n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCNfVmbBXHQ |

I think this song is about homophobic violence. Specifically in a rough part of town, perhaps where the youths are free from adult supervision and free to assemble. Queer kids tend to find each other, even if they aren't otherwise safe enough to come out--they find safety in each other, all knowing what it means to be different.
I think this implies that gay love is often more authentic because the stakes are inherently higher:
"You have never been in love
Until you've seen the sunlight thrown
Over smashed human bone"
Growing up in a repressive social climate, queer kids are bullied whether they are publically "out", or not. Depending on how much social support is available, too many gay kids end up dead/suicided/dead inside & repressed. Gay kids are more likely to know someone who died, and obviously it's worse because it's almost always due to a lack of real support because of hate against human sexuality.
Also Hector is dead, probably because he hooked up with too many of the repressed kids in his neighborhood. They couldn't deal with how their body responded to Hector and they took out their violence on him.
It's all there in the song. A gun is a gun is a phallus. |
