I CAN NOT BELIEVE WHAT I AM READING IN THESE COMMENTS. UNBELIEVABLE! IF THIS IS HOW OUR YOUNG PEOPLE THINK THERE REALLY ISN'T A LOT OF HOPE FOR THE FUTURE!

A young boy in middle school who's friends were picking on him one day is NOT sinister! No insult intended here but as I read through these interpretations I am appalled by what I am reading. Very violent, twisted, sick & bloody interpretations, no one saw this as innocent at all. What kind of a world are we giving to our children with all the violent media, games, music etc.. Those who play them or watch the movies, listen to the music don't even realize they are being played because the people who put this stuff out are only in it for the money. If My Little Pony sold the kind of volume the trash out today sells you'd be seeing nothing by My Little Pony type games. They don't care. The video games give kids an opportunity to act out what they see in movies and hear in some violent music They tell us it's only a game, a movie, music and has no effect on our children. Due to the type of site this is I would gather the commenters are young, from the interpretations I would judge teenagers. Here's your proof of the damage being done to our children by all the violent media. What a sad statement on the culture here in the US.

Seems like NOBODY bothered to LOOK IT UP and see if the SONG WRITER shared anything about the meaning of HIS SONG! I think I read ONE person share something even close to what the song really means. The others are simply sad, degenerate kind of thinking. Anything from guillotines, Marie Antoinette, The French Revolution, Soldiers in battle who had their throats slit etc.. The songwriter said simply the melody is based on the Disney song Whistle While You Work and it was just about being picked on in middle school. He said most of his songs were written from personal experience. Sinister? LOL!

Example, they all honed in on the "following the pack all swallowed in their coats etc..". Lets keep it simple. Have you ever seen young kids who's parents bundle them up so much they can't even put their arms at their sides? That's all he is talking about. Kids walking in line, all bundled up against the weather, walking in the snow. One slips and skins his knee. Where are these people getting battle fields and heads cut off & red coats meaning loyalty to the French Government in the French Revolution. Simply UNBELIEVABLE. Funny in some ways but in the ways that matter it really is scary!

@[herebyforever:28144] Has nothing what so ever to do with death. Swallowed in their coats is nothing more than describing the way young children look when their parents bundle them up to go out in the cold. THIS IS THE MEANING THE SONGWRITER GAVE IN ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE. It is simply about the writers experience in middle school on a day his friends were picking on him. Why did nobody think of a kid with a skinned knee. Seems like NOBODY even bothered to look it up to see what the SONG WRITER had to say about his song!

@[Sans:28142] OMG!! According to the songwriter, his songs are mostly written from personal experience and this is based on a day in middle school when his friends were picking on him. I put the link to the interview with the songwriter but here is an excerpt:

Fleet Foxes songwriter Robin Pecknold revealed to Rolling Stone that his songs are “written from personal experience,” including “Hymnal,” which was about a time when his friends ditched him in middle school. The lyrics might have been about childhood past, but the melody came from a familiar source — namely, Walt Disney. “The idea was a song like “Whistle While You Work,” from Snow White, you know?” Pecknold said. “So it started with that very beginning thing, the first kind of like, melody. And then once the verse was done, it just seemed like it lent itself to the repetition, you know?”

@[Wolfin:28141] I think you may want to take a moment to look up what the songwriter says it is about. He says it is about a memory from middle school when his friends were picking on him. The melody itself is based on the Disney song 'Whistle While You Work'. Some of these interpretations are absolutely ridiculous. I'm wondering about the age of most the average commenter here. Sixteen to twenty I'd guess.

Lady GaGa – Shallow Lyrics 6 months ago
About par for Lady GaGa. Guess I'm just from another time when music had more meaning (Woodstock was AWESOME!). Saddest thing was after what many thought to be his most memorable performance Jimmy Hendrix was dead almost a year to the day later.
Today we get 'stars?' of this calabre. Very sad. Since I gave my age away is there anyone else of my vintage out there who understands what I'm saying about a time when you could tell what band did what song just by hearing the song, even if you'd never heard THAT particular song before (If you're from my generation, think of Boston......heard one of their songs, you heard 'em all but there was ever a question about what group recorded the song? ELO, The Stones, The Beatles, The Mama's & The Papa's, Rod Stewart, The Who, The Guess Who, etc., etc., etc.. Groups had an individual style back then. Today they all sound the same with lyrics which are just meaningless babble.
