This song can be interpreted in many different ways, but what striked me the most was the use of haunting metaphors, which gave me the sense that the song is about feeling like a ghost. By this example, she is describing the feelings of despair, feeling ignored, feeling misunderstood. If this is the case, the song really has a meaning of depression or anxiety. Depression and anxiety are often compared to feeling haunted, which could be why the use of these metaphors were majorly placed as the key symbolism of these lyrics. The lines that stood out to me the most were “open my mouth, all that comes out, is white noise and imcomprehensible sounds, and all you ever do, is turn me down”. This details a sense of misery, like nobody hears you or understands you. She then goes onto describing how a ghost feels, or how she feels inside of her mind in the chorus; “I’m watching, I’m waiting, I’m aching, suffocating. I’m breathing, I’m speaking. Can you hear me?” These lines are just some examples of what stood out to me as a ghostly metaphor for depression or despair. |
