| Crosby & Nash – Mama Lion Lyrics | 2 years ago |
|
This may be a song about Joni Mitchell, with whom Graham Nash had a relationship at one time. There are various clues in the lyrics. Some refer to Joni's song, "I'd like to see you sometime," and there's a reference to her song Banquet from the album For The Roses. There are other clues in these lyrics, surely, and maybe some Joni fans might be able to spot them. The lyric, "hole in my destiny" may be that he and Joni were not meant to be as a couple. The live version of this song on an album called "Crosby-Nash Live" (1977) is really great and high energy! |

| Tanya Tucker – Delta Dawn Lyrics | 5 years ago |

I was intrigued to remember this 70's song when I recently heard an instrumental version of "Big Country," a bluegrass recording by Bela Fleck and others. Reminded me somewhat of Delta Dawn and the c.1841 "The Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond," so... I wanted to look into the meaning. At first the song meaning provided here and on Wikipedia sounded legitimate, the woman with mental illness etc. But I just now saw an online video interview of one of the writers, Alex Harvey, about this song. It's at YouTube. Search for "Story Behind the Song: Delta Dawn." He gives an almost entirely different take, only partially explaining the song, which puzzles the commenters over there on YouTube. Meanwhile the Wikipedia backstory for the song is poorly sourced. I may do some more research on this later. I don't see anything citing the story of the supposed "Delta Dawn" woman with any authority. What a pretty melody though! |

| Gladys Knight and the Pips – Midnight Train To Georgia Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| As many times as I have heard this old song, I find it can still turn on the waterworks. It has a sad component--his failed dreams--but her reassuring and unhesitating move to go with him no matter what is so inspiring, and speaks to the meaning of true love. It's also a fun song (especially the ooh-ooh's) but something of a tearjerker if you let it. | |
| Aretha Franklin – The House That Jack Built Lyrics | 7 years ago |

I submitted a lyric correction. The entire meaning of the song as Aretha sings it is that she "toyed with love" and now she's sorry. I hear the lyrics this way: This is a house that Jack built, y'all Remember this house! This was the land that he worked by hand It was the dream of an upright man There was a room that was filled with love It was a love that I was proud of This is a life and a love that he planned Of a love, the same old love Of the house that Jack built. Remember this house! There was a fence that held our love, There was a gate that he walked out of This is the heart it is turned to stone This is a house, but it ain't no home This is the love that I destroyed On the day that I toyed with love, In the house that Jack built, I'm gonn' remember this house! Oh oh what's the use of crying? You know I brought it on myself There's no denying But it seems awful funny That I didn't understand Until I lost my upright man Up on the hill Everything stands still In the house that Jack built I’m gonn' remember this house Listen! I got the house I got the car I got the rug And I got the rack But I ain't got Jack And I want my Jack back! I turned my back on Jack He said he wasn't coming back I turned my back on Jack He said he wasn't coming back Oh, Jack You oughta come on back Oh Jack You oughtha come on back To the one that you built It’s the same one that that you built You oughtha come on back I didn't understand until I lost an upright man Come on back Jack It's such a great song, a real perfect track! |
