Earlier I saw a comment (Made by quietdoll on songmeanings.com) that described multiple parts of the song, however he did not cover every single part. He also stated that he was a atheist, and he would like for someone of the christian faith to share their thoughts on the song. Well, as a high school sophomore studying in theology, I figured I could give a interpretation as well as any other. "There's a reckonin' a-comin', And it burns beyond the grave" Obviously in reference to the judgement seat of Christ (God), 2 Corinthians 5:10. In both the Christian and Jewish faith, there is the belief of every single human standing before the judgement seat of God, where God then goes through all of the things you have done in your life. Where the beggar, Lazarus, was sent would be Abraham's Bosom, a part of the Sheol (Grave) that prophets and others were sent waiting for Yom HaMelech (Day of the King, Coronation of the King, etc.) Lead inside my belly 'cause my soul has lost its way In reference to Roman culture, as this was in Rome, after all. Roman Patricians (Roman Nobles) had the habit of using lead syrup (Sapa) in their foods, especially in their wine. This verse is most likely to show that the Patricians used their wealth on frivolous, nonsensical things instead of helping the poor in their community. And doing so quite literally killed them. Oh, Lazarus How did your debts get paid? Oh, Lazarus Were you so afraid? The first part, while not actually happening in the bible (The Rich Man and Lazarus talking), was able to show the characteristics of the Rich Man. The first part is him asking (not begging just yet) Lazarus how he was able to pay off his sins and make it into Abraham's Bosom. I am not quite sure about the second part, but I believe that it is not the Rich Man asking him for a legitimate answer, but he is trying to make a bit of small talk to try and ease Lazarus into giving him an answer. When the fires, when the fires have surrounded you With the Hounds of Hell comin' after you I've got blood, I've got blood on my name Both the fires and the Hounds of Hell are pretty explanatory, both are referring to hell. The second part is there to show that the death of Lazarus is on the Rich Man's head. When the fires, when the fires are consumin' you And your sacred stars won't be guiding you I've got blood, I've got blood Blood on my name Now that the fires are consuming him, his damnation is present. Sacred stars is in reference to star worship (Astrolatry), which was present in both Hellenistic (Greek) and Greco-Roman religion. Not a spell gonna be broken With a potion or a priest When you're cursed you're always hopin' That a prophet would be grieved In reference to Luke 16:30 with the prophet verse, however the first three are in reference to biblical curses/spells in general. No spells/curses in the Bible are weak. All of them take great effort to remove or apply, and generally require some sort of effort made by God. Oh, Lazarus How did your debts get paid? Oh, Lazarus Were you so afraid? Repeat of what I said earlier. However, the shouting begins to show just how desperate he is starting to get. Can't you see I'm sorry I will make it worth your while Made a dead man's money You can see it in my smile In reference to all of the wealth he had, but he never used it for anyone and kept it to himself. The 3rd line reinforces this fact, that many people died due to his selfishness. It also shows how desperate he is, once again, by the 4th line. He is basically pleading to Lazarus, "You are right. I am scum. But lives are at stake here! Don't you care?" Oh, Lazarus How did your debts get paid? Oh, Lazarus Were you so afraid? Once again, used to show how depraved his mind is now, to the extent that he is so desperate he is mad. When the fires, when the fires have surrounded you And the whole wide world's comin' after you I've got blood, I've got blood on my name I already annotated this line, however I am going to re-annotate it to point out that this line fits Cain rather well, more so than the Rich Man. When the fires, when the fires are consuming you And your sacred stars won't be guiding you I've got blood, I've got blood Blood on my name Already mentioned. It won't be long 'Til I'm dead and gone Shows that he knows he is damned, and that he will stay there for eternity, never to be seen again. It won't be long 'Til I'm dead and gone Watch the fires rise under my skin Down to the bone Scorchin' my soul Mentioning hell pretty much destroying him, to the extent of "scorching his soul". Nowhere to run Nowhere to run Nowhere to run Stated three times to show that he is damned, and that there is no escape. When the fires, when the fires have surrounded you With the Hounds of Hell comin' after you I've got blood, I've got blood on my name When the fires, when the fires are consuming you And your sacred stars won't be guiding you I've got blood, I've got blood on my name When the fires, when the fires have surrounded you And the whole wide world's comin' after you I've got blood, I've got blood Blood on my name All three of these stanzas already annotated. |

| @[quietdoll:25101] I am going to be leaving a comment and making references to all verses in the song. The reason I am leaving a comment on yours is because you said you would like a response from someone who was religious, and the people I know consider me so, so I figured you would want a response. | |
