I know what this song is about but i wonder if [maybe too early in time] but the person has a drug habit.They refer
to monkey on your back to a drug habit I think heroin.
Tis term is rarely used in alcohol addiction.He fears the money and doesn't want to get that habit so hes bookin!
I can tell that Walter's addiction to heroin and other things but mostly smack,was bad and deep and he knows alot about the street lingo ,so he was there.So much reference
that it takes one to know one, but Walter says it brilliantly and forget about Mr. Becker. Walter was genius in no uncertain terms.The best reference which is not so obvious like Time Out was Walter's Medical Science.What a song it is!! I have been listening to both Walter since inception which is about 50 years. I am devastated to put it mildly of Walter's Death. I love Donald to death but as song writers they are both very different.Walter is my favorite as a solo artist ,but again they are the best songwriter and players in my world bar none except Pul and John- the beatles of course. |

All the heavy novel readers and interpreters of the WALL. I saw that movie before moat of you were born! This song has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE WALL! So, let´s put it to bed when i was young i used to thing Pink Floyd were all these tripped out intense people where like most rock stars stars they´re nice normal guys who play good music. Roger Waters was doing a gig somewhere in Philadelphia at the Spectrum or Veterans Stadium.He got sick during the gig ,he had fever, his hands as he played bass felt like two balloons, he didn´t think he could continue playing the gig.They had a doctor with them and the doctor gave him a shot of medication not drugs but actual meds .He said the shot hurt like hell but it made him feel better so he would finish the gig and as they say in the Good-fellas that´s that!.THAT IS WHAT COMFORTABLE NUMB IS ABOUT PERIOD.I HAD MY MAN ROGER IN AN INTERVIEW SAY EXACTLY THAT. I THOUGHT IT WAS ABOUT A JUNKIE THAT GOT LOST IN DOPE SINCE I WAS ONE, BUT NOPE, IT´S ABOUT WHAT I JUST TOLD YOU |

youre right about the guitar solo. There are so many.i met, have photos with me and Roger Nichols ,grew up near Walter and have been with them from the beginning.,and seen them live in early 70´s and way beyond.Walter´s death has crippled me as i am typing this at 64 4:30 in the morning.i have searched everywhere to find anything like those two and i do no think i will see it in my lifetime. If there is such a thing as a true Fan it is I..Please listen carefully many many times with headphones to CIRCUS MONEY. I am not sure but i think the guitar sols were both Larry Carlton and Walter or larry played Walters written parts. |

I am a Hugh old school not my old school Steely Dan fan and an ex real bad drug addict and professional musician.This one puzzles me and i love all the interpretations! Time out of mind is obvious.
Chasing the dragon you can inject or smoke dope& you can sniff as well.They have eluded to shooting and smoking in this song.
Biscayne Bay is not a place where heroin was prevalent .maybe in the real old days but more cocaine and it was the Colombians not the Cubans who brought it in.In those days heroin came from Asia.I do like the interpretation about Donald and Walter going to Dr Wu in Washington to clean up . better yet i want to hear someone´s interpretation of Darkling Down by Walter who i miss very much and it may take me the rest of my life to get over his death,as Steely Dan is no more.Never will anyone be like them.i am happy that Donald is still alive and i love all his Cds except Morph the cat. However i do like some of the cuts on the record.Walter´s Circus Money is incredible and Sunken Condos became very addictive to me.My interpretation of Darkling Down is about a degenerative Gambler.Also Walter sings very well.What a tasteful and talented musician.Been Seeing and listening to them for 37 years with headphones so i miss nothing! |
