Hole – Violet Lyrics 2 years ago
I don't think she's talking about the real sky in the beginning. The purple color and the "stars look just like little fish" is from blacking out or almost blacking out. The author was hit... hard.

The words are about violence, sexual violence.

I think "violet" is a play on the word "violate".

In the end the sky is all violence. The author gives the violent more violence (fights back). I don't think she sees herself as a victim, more of a participant.

She ends up on top (one above and one below) and gets what she, wants, and never wants it again.

Jack Off Jill – Vivica Lyrics 4 years ago
I think this song is about an old woman (Vivica) who is living in a nursing home in Florida (humid hell) The old lady is in bad shape, likely semi-comatose, and she will not ever get better (no tender scar or twist of fate can save you now)

The writer of the lyrics (perhaps the old lady's granddaughter) thinks she is beautiful. The "he" perhaps the old lady's husband does not say she is beautiful. He has given up on her. He is vague, will never change, and really not present.

The writer feels the opposite.

The Black Keys – Little Black Submarines Lyrics 5 years ago
No doubt in my mind that "little black submarines" refers to the once popular drug once called "black beauties". In their highest dose they are all black oblong capsules that look for all the world like little black submarines. The drug is biphetamine, two types of amphetamines bound I side one capsule. It is similar, tho not the same as, the drug commonly called Adderall. If you get addicted to them, as many truck drivers and soldiers did, it will totally wreck your mind. We are talking about strong speed. Biphetamine T was an even more addictive version that contained qualude as well. Talk about voices getting lost and out of time. I'm not sure if the narrator of the song is talking about a profession like the military or trucking (put me back on the line) bot these professions abused black beauties and used the term "operator", or if the narrator is just talking about being addicted to black speed pills.

They always do. Gavin writes poetry, it's always about something. This song is about writing poetry (lyrics) on an old manual typewriter, which I'm betting he does. Little Things is about being a junkie. Btw people are always interpreting his lines wrong as well. In Little Things he says "Turkish sequestress" a Turkish female kidnapper, that's what a sequestress is.

Heroin.

Bush – Machinehead Lyrics 7 years ago
As I've written before on here you are all wrong. The machine head is a manual typewriter, or more specifically writing on a manual typewriter without overthinking.

Breath in breath out, is sitting waiting for inspiration.

Tied to a wheel, my fingers got to feel. The wheel is the paper roller that changes the lines of text. Fingers on the keys.

The next line is actually bleeding through its arcane smile. Arcane means mysterious, old, secret. Look at the front of an old manual typewriter, the letter arms are arranged in a smile, bleeding is a common metaphor for good writing. Bleeding on the page. Bleeding through the smile.

I turn on a whim, loading another sheet of paper. I slide to the right, pushing the carriage over to the beginning of the line. I felt you like electric light. Inspiration, an idea, the light bulb over the head.

It's about poetry. Poetry from the heart (and how rare good poetry is these days) because, writers lean on their conscience wall, over think the words instead of letting them flow on the page.

Again the bleeding on the page metaphor, like being intoxicated.

Blood is like wine, unconscious all the time. If I had it all again I'd change it all.

Gavin writes concise vivid poetry. The songs are not random. They are not "jumbled of words". The words mean things, even if we all haven't figured them out yet.

Fu Manchu – Mongoose Lyrics 7 years ago
OK, now I know, it all makes sense. Tom McEwen, the "Mongoose" just passed away. The song is about one of the legends of drag racing, and is likely referencing the first drag strip in America in Santa Anna, orange county California. (in the 1950s,a dirt town). The Mongoose flies. It's about drag racing.

Bush – Little Things Lyrics 8 years ago
It's probably been covered already, but I think he is saying "my Willy is food". Cupboard is empty is a reference to drugs as food, a necessity, and I think this is another one. Drug pusher =candy man in slang. Candy man=Willy Wonka. My willy is food. Just a guess.

About drug addiction. I want to point out the line "I took it some questions" should probably be "Turkish sequestress" sequestress being a female kidnapper, Turkish being the source country. Basically heroin addiction.

Bush – Machinehead Lyrics 8 years ago
This song is about writing, writing from the heart (bleeding on the page) on an old fashioned manual typewriter. (the machine head)

"breathe in, breathe out, breathe in, breathe out
Breathe in
Breathe in, breathe out, breathe in, breathe out
Breathe in"

Sitting, thinking.

"Tied to a wheel, my fingers got to feel"

The wheel is the roller, fingers on the keys, waiting for inspiration.

The next lyric is often misquoted. It is "bleeding through its ARCANE (meaning old) smile, just look at the front of an old typewriter, you'll see the smile.

What the heck is tar decay, LOL?

Bleeding is common metaphor for writing real feelings.

" spin on a whim, I slide to the right"

Loading blank page, sliding the arm over to start a fresh line.

"I felt you like electric light"

Inspiration, like a light bulb over the head.

Got a machinehead, it's better than the rest
Green to red machinehead
Got a machinehead, it's better than the rest
Green to red

Machinehead is the manual typewriter to writer's head connection. Writers who use manuals are proud of their specific machine (better than the rest). Green to red is the correcting ribbon, black and red type. Look at one, the black looks shiny and dark green.

"deaf dumb and thirty
Starting to deserve this
Leaning on my conscious wall
Blood is like wine
Unconscious all the time
If I had it all again
I'd change it all"

Getting old, writing in a contrived way, not being authentic, having writers block, relying on your conscious rather than unconscious. Blood is like wine, true inspiration (bleeding on the page) is intoxicating, comes from somewhere deep, unconscious. Wishing you could get back to inspiration, good writing.

Bush has some of the coolest, deepest lyrics.

Awesome, rock on.

Monster Magnet – Space Lord Lyrics 8 years ago
This song is about a baby, more precisely about the birth.

"stuffed in your pocket..." pregnacy
"don't get my bath..." Ya know, pregnancy is tough, and the little bugger takes it out on the slaves.
"grease up your baby for the ball on the hill..." ultra sound.
"polish those rockets..." get those breasts ready.
"swallow those pills"... Take your vitamins.
"There's a car in the field now in a column of flame" the birth, head crowning, pain
"With two doors to choose but only one bears your name,..." the birth

And so on.

It's about a baby.

Someone is a funny MF.
