To me it's about getting emotionally involved with someone and then finding there are many things that you don't agree on.
Romance is a risk (You lay your bets and then you pay the price). It can become an on again-off again relationship (You think you're gonna break up, then she says she wants to make up). The solution is to realise there are differences and accepting each other for who they are (A compromise would surely help the situation. Agree to disagree but disagree to part). It's about compromise for the sake of love. |

I look at it quite literally.
He goes to dance with someone close but feels guilty about an indiscretion(s). He recalls movies with sad endings and this is where this relationship is going. He wants to pretend nothing happened but guilt means he can't dance with her the way he used to.
Someone has talked about what he's done and although they haven't talked about it, she's probably heard about it, or at least smart enough to sense something's wrong. The music is too loud to talk but it would go badly if they discussed it.
He realises his actions were a mistake and he will pay a price for it. His reputation is affected as no one else will 'dance' with him. He wants her to forgive him and stay but at the end of the song he says she's gone and accepts rightly so. |

I have never used drugs but do drug addicts think they're immune to the stuff? I took it as sex addiction, which someone likes to think hasn't got a hold on them. Either way, being in any addiction is to be strenuously avoided because as the song says "your will is not your own". |

It'a about an insecure man who thinks being tough and harsh is manly. He was also too proud to admit he could ever make a mistake. Now the relationship is over, he regrets how he behaved and that he didn't value the relationship.
He promises f he catches up with her again (she's obviously moved on), he will do it right. Will he? Depends if he has really changed. Anyway, he realises it will be a miracle if she does come back, presumably because she is now with someone who treat her right. |

The song has three parts to it. My take is:
1) The sadness the captive Jews felt when reflecting on the desolation of Zion (Jerusalem).
2) The Babylonian captors mocking them by requesting they sing a song which back then would have a been a song of praise to their God. The captors would have felt their gods gave them victory but the Jew's God had failed in protecting them.
2) The captive Jews felt they couldn't sing such a song in view of their circumstances.
3) They then appeal to God, asking that he see their plight and accept their prayers and thoughts as acceptable to him. In this they must hope he will turn his attention to them and deliver them.
The Bible makes it clear that the Jews being overrun by the Babylonian armies was due to their corrupted worship, not God's inability to defend his people. Point three reflects they understood that and sought forgiveness reconciliation.
The Rastafarian movement probably applied it to themselves as some sort of prophecy of restoration to Africa. |

He says with mutual love it will work out well and reminds her of her promise to always love him. For most of of the song the man reassures the woman of the depth, quality and enduring nature of his love. He also explains he is sensitive and his heart can be broken easily. |

He is frustrated by her cruel and uncaring ways so he wonders if she realises how much he loves her. He complains that he will eventually be worn out by the conflict of the physical love and bad way of treating him. This he calls jive talking, her insincere love that cannot be trusted. Despite that, the loving holds him to her. |

They either had a relationship that ended unilaterally (or she never let it start). He cannot break it off in his heart so watches her performances out of sight. He blames Broadway and her fame keeping them apart. |

It seems to me about someone who fell deeply in love and trusted that person. That trust was broken and while the innocent partner wants to get back together, they realise it will only happen again if they do.
They now feel such emptiness inside now they are apart because the love and faithfulness they crave so much from that person will never happen. They just wish they could fly away with a carefree bird and put this sadness behind them. |
