The song appears to be an appeal for someone to be sent to the protagonist as she goes through a fairly rapid graphic and time limited process of self-destruction, in the end, to her all-consuming demise. We get almost certainty that she’s passionately wanting to be sent a person, an improved or upgraded man. The woman in the cage is strong, proud, and confident, but she’s also frustrated, disturbed, and seemingly angry, deliberate, and past caring. Later in the song we get a clue that she’s singing about a replacement for someone who is currently not doing it for her. She wants someone who is stronger, a leader etc, and “someone breathing”, which could also be referring to reciprocal passion (for example, “out of his mind”). She’s also not just wanting a replacement man; she’s wanting a replacement soldier, someone whose mission it is to “get it”, get/understand her. One wonders if the song as a whole, as do a rising number of other songs recently, also infers a complaint about a modern dilemma about the trend for women to be promoted as warriors, tough, and indestructible, where there’s also an inevitable price for this so called independence, thick exterior and bravado. The superficial dream of having it all, is of course a relentless contemporary trap, one which is seemingly consuming many who subscribe to wanting to find politically defined success versus self-defined internal stability and happiness with someone else who can love us for who we naturally are.
