This song sounds like it's telling a life of a young man who has it all. A war comes up, probably the Great War, and he dies fighting in it. I will present some claims and some evidence to back up my arguement. 1. "He went to fight war, for his COUNTRY AND KING". In the First World War, the only kings on Earth at the time were: *Germany's King *France's King *Russia's Tsar (King) *Britain's King *Ottoman Empire's King *Serbia's King *Austria Hungary's King The US had a President, which is not considered a King. In many movies, games, TV specials, and other forms of media, one can always hear a British or French trooper say "I am fighting for (my) country and King." They are not referring to the God of their Religion (actually some might be, but you get the point). It is a strong (either) direct reference or a symbol. Another thing is the lack of modern technology. In the song, they don't say "He had Ferrari's, and Bently's by the score." (Actually, that sounds like a funny parody line). They say "White Horses". Back in the start of the 20th centuary, if you had a White Horse, you were considered extremely rich. It meant you don't work on a farm, also meaning you don't need to spend money to earn money. Cars were just starting to be mass produced, but, as one might think, only the military was finding widespread use of them. It also says: A bullet had found him His blood ran as he cried No money could save him So he laid down, and he died. In World War I, the most common death was by a bullet (or soemthing man-made). Sticking to our analagy, In the trenches, you didn't have Medic's and Hospital staff available. You couldn't. If you did, they would be immediately destroyed by artillery fire. To have "no money" means that he probably couldn't get to a hospital, and soldiers weren't known for having wads of cash on them during a trench fight. So, that's what I think the song is talking about: A young rich man (probably inherited the money from his parents), went off to fight in World War I, and died in the combat. Thanks for listening! |
