The Staple Singers – Respect Yourself Lyrics 2 years ago
@[flagstaffphil:40874] \r\nI think you\'ve got this completely wrong.\r\nMore like do not let people put you down. There\'s nothing in this that I think says to disrespect others just to have respect for yourself. Its asking people to respect one another.

The Beatles – She's Leaving Home Lyrics 2 years ago
@[SkaSong:38126]. Her parents say "we gave her most of our lives" - surely that indicates she is an adult?
Also "She's leaving home, after living alone, for so many years" - the phrase so many years would imply to me that she is an adult.
That's the great thing about song lyrics - they can be interpreted differently by us.

Sam Baker – Orphan Lyrics 6 years ago
Like a lot of Sam Baker's work, Orphan tells the tale of ordinary folk and their lives. This tells of an outsider when a child - a straight hair kid in a house full of curls - whose mother had no time for her and was happy to marry her off to the local jock to get her out of her hair (no pun intended). The song tells of a series of drab, failed marriages and ends with her stuck in another apparently lifeless and loveless marriage.
Sam's sparse lyrics and sparse music contrast beautifully with the melodic female voice that sings parts of the song. The use of swing low, sweet chariot evokes an atmosphere perhaps at odds with the apparent misery of the girl's life.

The mother's reaction to her daughter is selfish and introspective. She should be questioning what made her daughter feel a need to run away but instead she berates her daughter for the pain she brought her. Totally selfish. I actually think that is one of the points of the lyrics - showing the mother's inability to see beyond her own needs.

The Beatles – She's Leaving Home Lyrics 7 years ago
She's leaving home because her parents are over-protective, smothering her individuality, preventing her from living her life without their shadow hanging over her. She is an adult but living at home with the pressures of living under her parents' roof. Even when she leaves, we can see this because her mother doesn't ask why her daughter felt the need to leave - she only sees it as a punishment and from a purely selfish, introspective point.
She needed to escape and when she does her mother's reaction shows again why she needed to escape.
Very sad but so well written. Clever, clever song.
