Tom Waits – The Ghosts of Saturday Night (After Hours at Napoleone's Pizza House) Lyrics 8 years ago
More great lyrics in this song alone than some other artists whole albums (or careers for that matter). I particularly love the alliteration that bookends the song - 'the solitary sailor who spends the facts of his life like small change on strangers' and then the 'cracks out a carpet of diamonds across a cash crop car lot filled with twighlight Coupe Devilles'. So atmospheric.

Bruce Springsteen – Point Blank Lyrics 8 years ago
Springsteen's best ballads, like this one, are impossibly good. His delivery is so unassuming, and the lyrics so plain, that logically it should not be that emotionally impactive, yet it is. The section comparing the reality of the situation to his best memory of her is so wonderfully plaintive - he is singing (pleading) to her but he knows she will not listen and change.

I agree - a perfect song. It sneaks up on you... just seems to be about a guy who is passionate about his hobby then it builds and develops to an achingly melancholy and redemptive ending for him and his partner.

Paul Brady – The Island Lyrics 8 years ago
I discovered this by accident whilst revising for a promotion and it stopped me in my tracks. I love the dynamic going on between heartfelt sensitivity to a partner yet getting distracted and drawn back into the troubles of the world.
