| The singer is reminiscing about the subject of the song who is in the past. Past romance the singer lost. Hence the subject is a beautiful swan in photo only. The singer was the active party full of desire, but the subject was not convinced. The singer could only get partially through to her through the cracks. The singer does not want to slave or con the subject, hence encouraging her to do the "right thing" which in this case mean following her feelings. Her feelings took her away from the singer. The singer feels the pain of this decision, but still stands by his choice of encouraging her do follow the path of her feelings because her going with him would not have been a long term solution in any case. He had lost the race from the start. He only wanted to stay with her if he knew it was for good. But they both knew it was not. | |

First off hearing the chorus on radio it felt like a breakup song about relationship gone bad "what about all the broken happy ever afters" - a fairytale princess & prince reference and wanting to let go. Similarly at first "may break these bones" sounded like a reference to broken heart or similar. Obviously there was much more to the lyrics, and other commentators have listened the song longer than few seconds on radio. "We came when you called" and "may break these bones" illustrates American soldiers volunteering to fly off to far away places for their president in illusion of being peace makers and liberators only to face angry locals going at them with no end. These weapons are pointing to the "stars" (= US states) and asking the question from the politicians and government of the states/stars "what about us"? "We are problems that want to be solved, We are children that need to be loved" can also describe soldiers who more often than not come from difficult background. From poverty, minorities, uneducated young men who believed their (politicians) lies and promises, ready to sacrifice their life for what they thought was their country. But it wasnt. Rich, white and educated rarely go to army and sacrifice their bones or life for the president who wants power and oil. When did you read rockenfeller, trump or koch boys get hit by a bomb in Iraq? Who sold them boy soldiers out? River too far. |

Following an experience earlier this month the metaphors and symbols of the song are clearer to me. During out of town work trip I met this fantastic woman, and the connection was instant. We started the first stage of falling in love in Saturday morning walks, and hours of twilight talks escaping the rain in doorways of her town. Exchanging pieces of our soul for brief moments of closeness. What we shared in those few days was profound, beautiful and intoxicating. We both got scared of the strength of the draw we shared to each other on all levels. We didn’t have time to get to the routine or meaningless fights, and thus some depths of the song do not fully relate. We never talked about it, but she knows I have a wife and family, and would be too comfy and scared to ditch them. As self protection she told me not to keep contact I left town, but surely this is more secure for me as well. She is single, attractive and intelligent. This separation left me little sad and empty in my hopeless desire to get to know her better.. silly hope of exploring where that road could take us, and if there is gold at the end of the rainbow. I felt this ended too quickly hoping for more time.. “What's wrong and right.. Is where you'll find me hiding waiting for you” For the forbidden affair people this is the most powerful part. If we would’ve continued we would’ve needed to make compromise with our morals, and corrupt our souls if not relationship conscious of the sacrifice. The only way for me to keep anything going I would’ve needed to move in the shadows to explore my relationship with her. “The wicked lies we tell to keep us safe from the pain” Same theme as above. The affair needs to be kept secret to avoid one or both sides having big issues in their “real life”. “hope we don't take this ship down” is also part of avoiding other people finding out the truth. “The rain that falls.. Splashed in your heart.. Ran like sadness down the window into your room” Typical DMB symbolism where possibly fragments of the truth got out, and hurt the other party who is married. The acid rain filling the bleeding cracks of her heart, and poisoning her feelings for him.. and the closeness they share. “You cannot quit me so quickly…could squeeze me” The desperate call to get one more piece of the closeness you shared earlier.. usually it is the “single” party to the affair who has all the time, as the “cheater” is engaged in daily routines and cannot be waiting for long. This first part of the song establishes disparity between the lovers. The narrator immediately demonstrates his desire for all sacrifices to convince the other party to re-establish the connection. “Will I hold you again” points to the same direction. The other party is in full control of the relationship, if it still exists.. Could someone help me with this part: “Where you're smiling high..Is where you'll find me if I get tickled” |

In place of jumping to the obvious conclusion lets consider whether the song is : 1. Dialogue 2. Monologue The first singer (male/female) of the couple wants more from her/himself or the couple. Meaning this is the dynamic person in the couple who wants to move in, get married, get children or get a career for him/herself. Always moving forward and trying to reach the next level in relationship, personal life or career this driving person has been trying in vain to get them both moving forward, but he has failed ("not on the list"). The active person in the couple is exhausted in trying to move on. The reply comes from the passive person from the couple, who is happy with the "status quo" and stay as they are. Just kissing or in physical contact without further commitment or actively developing the relationship (or holding back the personal development of the other). Becoming something more (different) is not what the second party wants. She doesnt want to go beyond this stage of couple or personal development. The second person is not ready to "unroll" Clark Kent and become Superman, as she is too comfortable in her current situation. Like a caterpillar turns into a butterfly, she is not ready to transform herself or the relationship in something different. The next level is not for her. She doesnt want to "risk" moving together, getting married or taking that new job or moving to a new city/country ("where you wanna go"). She is not fit to be superhero who tries improve herself or the relationship. Physical "kissing" and status quo is maximum she can do. She is the passive one who is dragging the couple and the first person back both in the relationship and at personal level. Have you been the first (active - pushing forward) person in the relationship, or the second one who is not ready to commit, not ready to move, not ready for transformation (caterpillar / butterfly)? Both of them are exhausted in the relationship due to the difference in pace, timing and effort put in making it work. Which one are you? |

They meet in hotel bar because this is where the girl hangs out for work with her friends. She was a spoiled daddys girl in Boulder with life coming easy for her, but now she`s faced lives tough reality. The song writer bittersweetly dedicates this songs to "all the girls in boulder". This easy life girls ends up working girl, and thus the boy doesnt want to see her friends again. These girls hang out and find their prey in the hotel bar drunk. You dont look pretty in hotel bar for nothing. The girl is either nostalgic of meeting him or in desperate need for money and thus starts sweet talking him about old songs etc. In her line of work they end up at the back of the car owned by her employer the pimp. She doesnt have money for that type of car, and he notices it or even teases her about it. So they are both broken hearted to find her in that situation, and he specially down from her leaving him still. He may have hidden sadistic pleasure of her having stepped so low as she was the one who broke up. She being the rich girl with easy life, and then ending up like this. |
