This is my absolute favorite song of all time and I love the message that is sends. I believe it is advice to kids and those who feel like they have to grow up right away to slow down and enjoy everyday to the fullest because wanting to get old won't make it come any faster. He says "slow down you crazy child you're so ambitious for a juvenile" meaning that even if you have dreams and aspirations for the future, enjoy where you're at right now because you'll miss the simple times once they're gone. The lines " you've got so much to do and only so many hours in a day" are a way of saying that you have so many experiences ahead of you but life is short so you just grasp every opportunity in the present. The main part that is repeated really hits home with me where he says "when will you realize, Vienna waits for you" Vienna is a city in Austria nicknamed "the city of dreams" so by this Billy Joel is saying that all your hopes and dreams are waiting for you in the future but that doesn't mean you have to get there right now. The lines "slow down you're doing fine, you can't be everything you wanna be before your time" are a message that that at a young age you don't need to have everything figured out. Another one of my favorite lines in "take the phone off the hook and disappear for ahwile. It's alright you can afford to lose a day or two" which is a highly relavent statement in Joel's time and even more so now to take a break from technology and enjoy the real experiences of life because a couple days off social media or technology won't hurt you but not living life to the fullest can. Hope this helped but literally every line of this song should be listened to and analyzed because they are all so good. This song is a beautiful portrayal of the speakers unconditional love and loyalty to someone but Somehow I don't find it to be just cute and happy. The feelings that the speaker shows for her love prove that she is completely and utterly attached to this person and nothing could stop her from loving him forever. I believe this is what makes the song sad because at the possibility that he were to leave or they couldn't be together it would break her to pieces. She says "how long will I love you? As long as you want me to. And longer by far" this shows how even if he were to stop loving her she wouldn't stop loving him and it would take her much longer to get over him because she saw herself with him forever. All of her comparisons show that she is in this love for the long haul. Therefore the idea that he might leave her or that her feelings are much stronger than his exemplify a sense of one-sided love that can tear someone apart. Not sure if this is right or if it is just supposed to be cute and happy but this is what I relate to right now so this is what I get from it |

This song is pretty self explanatory but I think it is about her trying to deny that her feelings for the man who broke her heart are as strong as love. She says " I tell myself you don't mean a thing" and "I tell myself I don't care that much" but as she continues to reflect on their time together she realizes that she was madly in love with him and this is the reason that his absence has caused her so much pain. The chorus line "only love can hurt like this" means that she didn't understand just how strong her feelings were while they were in a relationship but now that he's gone she just now realizes that what she had was love and that's why she can't get over it and she's in so much pain. The lines "But it's the sweetest pain. Burning hot through my veins" I believe to mean that she is actually somewhat happy to now understand that she experienced her first love. The memories of the good times and knowing that it's love make her smile but also sting because she knows that it's over. Also "love is torture makes me more sure" again shows that she is more sure that what she felt for him is love because of the torture she's in. |
