I think this is more about the idea that we need those people who will fight for their causes, fight for things to be better. But it might be better to be the guy who figures out that somethings can't be fought and are better left to someone with a more noble fight for it.
Sure, the angry young man ends up bitter, but I think he's fighting for every cause under the sun rather than those that he can actually affect. |

I have to say I strongly prefer the original album version. The timing is waltz-like, and lends a dance quality to the tune that I think is incredibly fitting.
What do Venus and Jupiter have to do with eeach other? In this context, I don't think they do. Jewel said at one time that the painting 'Venus' by Modigliani was her inspiration for the song. The painting was a reaction to (and mocking of) Botticelli's 'Birth of Venus', and the style of that painting, which was a romanticized and unrealistic portrait of a woman.
The song is from a woman who does not want to be idealized and worshipped (take these stars from my crown).
Her use of Jupiter as her lover makes sense as he was the god of the sky, and the Ides (the midpoint of the month, with a full moon) was sacred to Jupiter, because on that day heavenly light shone day and night.
But the rest of the song, I always felt, was sexual. 'Lay me out in firelight, let my skin feel the night' is an obvious line, but I always looked at 'swallowing the moon' a beautiful picture of a woman in orgasm. |

Bear with me...I came at this from the end of the song so it makes a little more sense (at least to me).
The ship sounds like a metaphor for the church or, since this is from the album America Town, a metaphor for the States, the U.S.
The captain's hat, where his dreams were kept, has a hole in it, so his dreams are escaping. The captain represents leadership in one form or another, which has lost it's way. There is no clear goal, or he's giving up. The captain could represent political leaders, church leaders, etc.
The infantry (where we defend ourselves) is leaky...the excuses for the leadership or the collective failings are flawed and don't make sense anymore.
The hull, where we sleep, where we're at home and looking for salvation is cracked. We might be able to make it if we paddle hard enough, but the rest of the song basically makes it feel as though we're sinking and doomed.
The little monsters could be infantry or leadership. Could the infantry be turning on us? Or turning on the captain?
Anyway...sounds like a 'state of the union' song to me. Of course, we ARE just off the 2016 election débâcle. :) |

My problem with the vampire theory is that 'Here comes the sun again (to see me through)' sounds to me like the sun is helping him get through. So it seems like that doesn't work.
I'm leaning towards addiction of some kind...alcohol, drugs, etc. It makes more sense cohesively. It sounds to me like his addiction is getting in the way of his relationship with his girl. |

I mean, in the video, he dies and she is left behind, eventually committing suicide. But the song doesn't actually have to be about that. It could be a broken relationship (why didn't we see the signs...how did we get here?)

Some of the lyrics of "Bring on the Night" were recycled from the song, Carrion Prince (O Ye of Little Hope), which was written by Sting for the band, Last Exit.
The title Carrion Prince (O Ye of Little Hope) was taken from Ted Hughes's poem, King of Carrion, and is about Pontius Pilate; however, after reading The Executioner's Song, Sting felt that the words fitted Gary Gilmore's death wish, and says that since then, "I sing it with him in mind."
So it wasn't written for or about Gary Gilmore, but is simply very fitting. |

I really love Alexa Ray's voice. I'm sad to find so few of her songs on here and so few comments.
I hope it's because they are pretty self explanatory. This one is about her reflecting on her desire to show the world who she is, to be seen for all that is inside her. I think we all feel like the world only sees pieces of us, and often what they think they see isn't truly there. We all just want to be understood, I think. |

He's either asking for others to join him in trying to make the world a better place, or he's admitting that he's just as afraid of the rest of us.
