Emerson, Lake & Palmer – Tarkus Lyrics 6 years ago
The armadillo is actually progressive rock, ELP, and Keith Emerson himself, and the song is actually a paranoid foretelling of his own future downfall. As the progressive armadillo, ELP overcomes several enemy genres of Rock (country, metal, and disco?), but is finally defeated by the Mantichore of Punk Rock, which makes him look Passé. Seriously wounded, the ELP Armadillo drifts away down a river to a fate of unknown oblivion, since the Artists couldn’t be bothered to disclose what became of him. You get the feeling they were more interested in doodling around than telling a real story. As for the Mantichore, since it was probably The Ramones, it toiled in obscurity until it finally got a modest amount of cash. Then it promptly died. But its battle songs were used in commercials until it became posthumously revered, unlike the poor armadillo who is having a hard time aquatically drifting into the Hall of Fame. Even the monstrous form of the Donna Summers beat out this modest beast.

Sex change, but the evil parents slip in a Lobotomy as well, so he can't date men after his sex change. They did their parental duty, they defended society against their ungrateful viper of a son who had the abominable notion to become a girl. So they made him a Vegetable Girl, they stuck a secret caveat in. His brain was cut right after his junk was. He is now a she, but she will never have sex again. Or even move her head again. And she will never, ever Tell what was done to her. The Doctor saw to that.

Familial betrayal and hatred of the different. Your family is angry that that the neighbors are laughing about their son who wants his stuff cut off. So they tell the Doctor to chop up his brain too, so he won't date men after the operation. But they don't know that the Doctor secretly hates gays with a livid fury, and they wouldn't have much cared if they had known. The Doctor spitefully paralyzes his neck as well. He is sued for malpractice, but he is happy. The creature in the wheelchair says nothing any more, but it's face is a frozen rictus of fury over its Betrayal!

@[kassie1124:16001] Now it could be that the Doctor gave him a sex-change first. Then his parents sprung their surprise on him, and the Doctor followed this up with an unexpected lobotomy. The guy emphatically was not down with this unexpected development, but he was in no condition to complain about it afterwards. The Doctor was a maniac, something went wrong. Not only did he make no complaint, he never moved his head again. His parents wheeled him, uh, HER, around in a wheelchair with an odd smile on their faces. They had done their parental duty! The Doctor probably got into big trouble, he got a little too avid in his brain-cutting. Maybe he was a Homophobe! Aha! It was the Sixties, after all!

This is what the song means. The dude wants a sex-change operation. But his parents really hate him, they think he's crazy to want that. So they slyly pay the doctor to give him a LOBOTOMY instead. Imagine his chagrin! The climate was extremely hostile to such operations in the Sixties, not at all like now.
