Amos Lee – Highways and Clouds Lyrics 8 years ago
@[BeeSea0601:19132]
Your warning did not go unheeded by me! As a traveling musical reviewer, I follow troubadours as my chosen profession. I must also keep passion for their art apart from romantic yearnings, which could leave me a jaded shell of a human being, and put my music reviewing, career at risk to boot. Though I may be covered in 14th century jousting armor, troubadours and traveling musicians are well known for their ability to bypass protection in order to get a little squeeze at those throbbing organs inside our chests.

Yes. It's easy to see that Adele met her lamb over 10 years ago in Nashville, details of their long term relationship can be traced. Even the resemblance of Amos 2012 to her current husband is unmistakeable. Such an accommodating husband is confusing when listening to the lyrics of her first 3 albums. She was his Sweet Pea. Clear blue eyes was for her when after her youthful expectations of a relationship and its list of requirements flew away with Sam Smith, who can be heard singing his hopes of love dashed. Musical scores, tinkling pianos, guitar virtuosos traveling around making beautiful music together, is the project everyone follows morning and night. All you have to do is read the lyrics his lovers wrote to know whether or not you want the same. You can look to any lyric from anytime to know what to expect.

Sam Cooke left a trail of broken hearts and fatherless children. And did many others, when their lifestyle led them out. But Bill Withers, John Prine, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan (father figures to Amos), appear in his songs as well. "Give It All Up For You" is an ode to Bill Withers. "Stranger" has John Prine's Paradise contained within. (I was there when John Prine handed Amos his guitar to sing his song Paradise on stage. A precious song about the care a father shows his son.) I could go on and on. All this pondering in search for his own real father, as they all sing into the sunset, is what we can expect from the him and all his friends.

Here on the Internet, we have responsibility to record the truth! When I was in the war, I promise you this, the worst thing that could happen to man, was to be called a liar. My devotion to my wife is real, and I hope I'm not ever swept up in the turmoil of musical storm, hearts ripped out of chests to be eaten with glee. Clouds carry thunder and rain, and highways take me away daily from my loving wife. But the temptation is strong, to throw it all to the wind just for a spin, if ever I heard the call. Just kidding Lois, keep the fire burning, I'm coming home!

Amos Lee – I'm not myself Lyrics 8 years ago
Alright, that Ricky Martin interpretation was almost too much for this Americana, Heritage Folk templar to bare. Just plain strange -if you ask me [shaking head in dispair.] So here I am again, having to clear things up.

My role as a music reviewer makes me privy to "behind the scenes going ons" in the folk music arena. I was there when Amos Lee serenaded the Governor, Jim McGreevey of New Jersey and his exotic Portuguese-born, second-wife, Dina Matos. This song is Gov.McGreevey's first wife, Karen Schutz "grieving." Mrs. Schutz-McGreevey truly was unaware of "The Honorable" Governor McGreevey's nocturnal persona - that overtook him completely, until a full confession to the press was necessary. The backstage rumor, the night that Amos played for the Gov.of NJ, was that his first wife had followed him to the skinny-dipping approved, Gunnison Beach, NJ. Gunnison Beach was where she discovered her husband's business trips, with his manager, were actually extracurricular, marital excursions. This was an embroiling discomfiture to the young balladeer. Penning this verse was his correspondence of sympathy to the Govenor's wife, who was said to have been overtaken with confusion and heartache.

Amos Lee – Better Days Lyrics 8 years ago
Yes on the surface the song appears to be a song about self discovery on a man's journey through love relations. But an experience listener knows that Better Days actually chronicals the relationship between Jim and Tammy Faye Baker in their hey day. The ups and downs, the depression and the soulful commitment despite the changes in physical appearance and corrupted, inner countenances, mistakes made requiring deception, depraved cravings toward unlawful activities, unrestrained drives for power and greed, vibrate through every chord.

Tammy Faye filed for divorce from prison, but before the papers where signed, their turmultuous love affair, held our hearts aghast as they weathered every storm.

The song is a duet of Jim and Tammy singing their truth.

"When the lights go out, all I can think about is how we've seen better days." Neither Tammy or Jim could ever really let the lights go out - because the thought of better days was too much weight. Tammy televised the last days of her life, while Jim currently televises the end of days.

The depths of Tammy & Jim's discomfort threatens them throughout the ministerial couple's relationship. The songwriter parades his ability to observe the world, conjure the past and impact the future in 3 verses. A credit to his tradition, Lee reminds us where we've been and unveils the unspoken and unseen.

Amos Lee – Sympathize Lyrics 8 years ago
This song is not about the Bilble, nor is it about 2 different women. It is in facts depicts and honors the revolutionary artistry, of Edouard Manet (a cowboy artist) who flew by instict, and his favorite model Victorine Meurent. As a part time professor of art history, I am floored at the elegant simplicity in Mr. Lee understated expression which showcase's the artists mind, capturing the mood of the era and in modern times.

" The sharks in the tank
Oh, the man in the bank
he wants my money to loan
I can't understand
What the hell is his plan?
he ain't even got a home
Ain't got a home":
Well connected from birth, Manet was considered an aristocratic painter. He had private income. He was able to indulge in leisure and recreational activities that other artists could only dream of. This could be the reason he was able to buck the academic system of the time which put value in photographic painting. He is said to have been the man responsible for the transition between Realism and the more instictual, emotive Impressionsm Movement.

Refusing to take a regular job as his parents wished, he pursued what was important to him. The above verse is Manet's feelings of isolation. It seemed he was alone at times with his understanding of the brevity of life. The impact of his onfusion at white collar pursuits, and the general population's emphasis on money, instead of examining life.

"Girl on the street
with holes in her feet
looks through the eyes of a clown
She don't look a mad
She's feeling kinda sad
so i just walk around":
Introducing Manet's favorite model, Victorine Meurent. Young and poor with parents who are artists. They say Manet met he on the street, while she was carrying her guitar. She inspired the great work of art titled: Street Singer. "Holes in her feet" or "Holes in her shoes" says Manet thought she was looking for wealth. An embarrassingly male way of thinking about women which leads us to harbor resentment, toward independent women, (which Victorine was) "She just wants my money." Victorine is said to have dispised this depiction of her and stopped talking to Manet because of it. Ms. Meurent was said to have to endure more than Manet's perception - that she was an actual prostitute.

"I reassess
She's down on her luck
She's reading a book of lies":
Manet HAD to reassess because Victorine was admitted into the salon with her own paintings. She was poor, but not following well known artists around because she wanted their money. Even Manet fell victim to "common" thoughts about the female sex.
"She's reading a book of lies" refers to her attraction to realism and academic painting at the admonishment of Manet. The salon refused Manet certain years, while hanging her work instead.

" I don't know when
I'll be coming home baby
but I sure sympathize
Can sympathize
Can sympathize"
Manet was married with a son. His artistic indulgences and leisure activities kept him away from home. He is known for not recognizing his son, painting him, but never really seeing him.

"Angels spread the wings
on all the dirty things
that you
do"
Angels, goddesses and muses are often interchanged in poetry, art and song. Such as in Paul Cezzanne's (Kiss of the Muse / Dream of the Poet) as well as Goethe's poem: "Muse's Mirror".

"She drops to the floor
Her heads by the door
Her bible is by her side
Heaven is calling
The new world is falling
and she ain't got a
single person left to confide
No one to confide
No one to confide
Ah, to confide"
Victorine died of natural causes in a house that she shared with a friend. She was also a model for Degas and other well known, male artists of the time. She had a front row seat and clear view of popular male behavior. She is said to have reached financial independence as an artist, and never lived with a man to support her, thus the Bible by her side, or the story of life. Manet was known for being supportive with her artistic pursuits, even helping her with her career - they are said that their conversations led to 2 of Manet's most famous paintings: Olympia and Luncheon on the Grass. Artists being Victorine's confidants - they died before her. With so few like minds - she was bound to a life of solitude - "No one to confide" Manet could sympathize. He couldn't have a conversation with his parents, his own family, the salon and most of the world's population.

I sympathize

Can sympathize

It ain't no jive
I was burnin' alive (Manet died at 51 in 1883 from complications relating to syphilis, then incurable)
whenever you walk in the room
It happened so quickly
I was feelin' so sickly
like a lover who lost his muse

Hats off again and again to the masterful Amos Lee for bringing the folk back home to our artistic roots.

Amos Lee – El Camino Lyrics 8 years ago
OK SeaBee, lets put your industry fantasy party notions to rest. This song, by a modern Americana's finest, deserves respect and reverence. It brings solace to those with hearts and souls who have gone on before them. Those who know the the Country Outlaw spirit, knows El Camino is in fact a haunting ghost story, sung through Willie Nelson and Mr. Lee by The Great Johnny Cash.

"Well all my friends treated me so well"
Mr. Cash had more friends than stars in the sky

"You know I'm headed out to that Mission Bell
Gonna wash my soul, gonna get it clean"
This speaks of Johnny's knowledge of where he was headed.

"Heading down the border road called the El Camino"
The reference to touring "On The Road" here is pretty clear. El Camino translates into "The Road" - "On the Road Again" was Cash and Nelson's #1 hit "what they loved was making music with their friends." And this will go on and on in the great beyond.
Johnny is staying on the Border Road.

Well I've been a prince,

"you know I've been opposed
By a barb wire fence and a murder of crows"
Nelson knows Cash has been opposed. He was locked up 7 times. He was also fired by his label, even black listed.

"I believe in all I've loved and all I have seen"
You don't actually have to know Cash, as Nelson did to know that line rans through the marrow in his bones.

"Heading down border road called the El Camino
Heading down border road called the El Camino"
A fear of flying would've prevented Cash from flying up to heaven, and his fear of snakes kept him out of hell. Instead he's going on touring waiting for his friends to join him.

"Yeah my hearts grown sick"
Johnny had by-pass surgery.

"I've got a shepherds crook as a walking stick"
Later in life he had a coveted hand carved cane.

" And I'm heading on."
To the eternal border road, neither above or below.

"Yeah my hearts gone blue and I've done wrong by you
I don't know what to do"
The accidental death of his older brother when he was young, plagued Cash his whole life. He felt guilty for not being able to prevent it. This yet again identifies Cash to Nelson.

"But I'm moving on, yeah I'm moving on"
To the great touring road in the beyond.

"One and one is two",
Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash

"two and two is four"
turn into 4 with the Super Country Outlaw Stars know as the Highway Men, with their hit album: "The Road Goes on Forever" with fitting songs

"I'm walking back and forth cross your cracked tile kitchen floor"
Mr. Cash's ghost walks back and forth between Mr. Lee and Nelson to give his advice to prepare for the road. Little joke here to remind Nelson how they partied. Not your regular industry party, their parties had them passed out drunk on the kitchen floor.

"With the orange juice"
Dexedrine was the addiction of choice for Mr. Cash. Juiced up on little orange pills.

"and the sun that shines"
Sun Records, with the bright yellow label and the energetic rooster...

"It really breaks my heart leaving you behind,
It really breaks my heart leaving you behind"
Little joke here, it's always best to be the first one to go.

"All my ships have sailed away"
There comes a time in every mans life, who lives long enough, that they have to watch the women move on, including his heart and soul, June Carter Cash who passed away just before he followed in 2003.

" The price of this politic",
Keeping up with the public eye keeps you home studying religion. Johnny, The Man in Black, penned a novel about the Prince of Peace titled, "The Man In White." He had a deep relationship with God and his son.

" That there's plenty of time to pray".

"Plenty of time to waste away."
"Pack only the most important things," he says to his friend. "And get ready to hit the road with me, playing the music we love with the people we love, our heart and souls, Forever on the Border Road between the silvery ocean and the dry dessert."

"Well to all my friends, that I've loved the most"
Johnny had many friends including his fans, but this song is to the friends that he loved the most.

"You know I'm heading out to that other coast
Gonna wash my soul, gonna get it clean"
Rocking Gospel music during the in between.

Gonna wash my soul, gonna get it clean"
Rocking Gospel music during the in between.

Heading down the border road, called the El Camino,
Heading down the border road, called the El Camine

Amos Lee – El Camino Lyrics 8 years ago
OK SeaBee, lets put your industry fantasy party notions to rest. This song, by a modern Americana's finest, deserves respect and reverence. It brings solace to those with hearts and souls who have gone on before them. Those who know the the Country Outlaw spirit, knows El Camino is in fact a haunting ghost story sung through Willie Nelson and Mr.

Amos Lee – Colors Lyrics 9 years ago
I think going down the soap opera commercial break is the wrong path with this song of Americana history. Here we truly see a blue blood song writer at his finest.

In 1998 American was riveted by a scandal that rocked the nation. The 42nd President of the United States, Bill Clinton, and a brave American woman, Monica Lewinsky.

"Yesterday, I got caught up in the circus,
feeling like such a mess."

Clearly is what was going on in President Clinton's mind on January 21, 1998 when the story hit mainline press. "

"And now I'm down,
I'm just hanging on the corner.
I can't help but reminisce"

President Clinton is sitting on the corner of his desk, remembering the details of his press conference, addressing the lurid details.

"Cuz when you're gone,
all the colours fade.
When you're gone,
no new years day parade.
You're gone,
colours seem to fade."

Ms. Lewinsky has been taken in for questioning and the colors are fading from the American flag. This is not a time for celebration.

"Your mama called, she said,
that you're downstairs crying.
Feeling like such a mess.
Ya, i hear ya,
in the back ground balling.
What happened to your sweet summer time dress."

"You're Mama called" is speaking about Linda Tripp numerous phone calls with Monica, where she revealed to a Ms. Tripp (an older confidant of Lewinsky's), everything that had been going on between she and President- which of course might make her cry.

What did happen to her sweet summer time dress? A blue, light-weight number that has been forever burned into the mind of every American.

The rest of this political song is pretty clear cut. Secrets and "faults locked in vaults," makes perfect sense here. Maestro Lee has woven a political intrigue, history and the gut wrenching aftermath of political scandal into a song that will entertain and educate far into the future.
