It feels like a separation of two friends under uncontrollable circumstances and years later there is a reminder of the friendship, be it a dream or a photograph that floods the memory. The person can never forget and wishes the best for the other. He is alone and saving his love for this ghost from the past. He has a reality check and wishes for the key to his heart back so he can save his love for the future. A positive blues that will heal your heart. Very understated and subtle for a hard rock band of this era. Brilliant!

The optimistic interpretation is that the girl has to move on from the relationship to have a better life and that her location and "friend" is holding her back. Her friend is very sad but understands the situation and trys to move on. The pessimistic version of the song is to dark and personal for me to comment on because I have not experienced the pain that the writer has seen. This is why I love song lyrics.
