I can't help but think this song is about Chris Cornell (RIP(<-- That's always gonna hurt...)). It seems like the only person who hasn't been mentioned here (not that I've read every comment...) And the fact that he has to leave makes me think it's because of his addiction.. He has to leave to get his fix. Personally I think they've both referenced each other in quite a lot of their work, kind of a professional rivalry type of thing. I'm sure the dogs CC talks about it Rusty Cage and Outshined are the guys from PJ. I'm not up on my Mother Love Bone, but there seems to be lots of dog references about that. This song is genius. The drug innuendo is obvious, but the vinyl reference is heavier, it beats it. To me, this song is about someone who has dealt with a heroin addiction, but now finds the joy in the music. He wants you to think about smack, he compares it to music, using the same metaphorical writing as a heroin song. This line clinches it for me: "I'd rather you than her." Could be talking about choosing drugs or music over a woman. But I think he's preferring music over heroin. Heroin gets referred to as a woman in a lot of music. Then there's the tempo of the song.. It's a bloody celebration! This is someone who's conquered addiction and is rocking hard! Awesome! |

Sun = the high from heroin. Snake = syringe (obvious metaphor) note that it gets mentioned twice the first time it's in his eyes (like a proper hardcore junkie, shooting into his eye) that's why it's the black hole sun. Second time it gets mentioned, he's talking about withdrawal (time is far too long for snakes = too long between hits) The high from heroin washes away the rain, heroin takes his emotional pain away. Research other Chris Cornell songs on this site, heroin comes up far too often to be ignored. He grew up in a heroin epidemic, he lost friends to it (all my friends are skeletons, spoonman).. Accept it.. But it doesn't mean the song is awesome.. It is truly an amazing piece of art.. |

In heroin circles a "mother superior" is a veteran junkie, because of the length of their "habit", it's a thing, I'm not making it up.. Erg.. Awesome song, but yes, if you're a heroin addict at a shooting gallery, the spoonman is going to save you (with his hands). His hands are also going to "come together" (rubs hands greedily), and you're going to be together with his plan, because you WANT to buy his drugs.. Also all your friends are skeletons because they've died from heroin overdoses, and all your friends are brown and red because heroin is brown when you buy it, and then red just before you shoot it (in the syringe, as you pull back, just before you shoot). Brown and red gets referenced again in the day i tried to live.. (blood and mud), with all goes other pigs (shooting gallery).. Wake up people.. |

Nice.. Given the whole heroin thing, as others have commented on with slaves and bulldozers and burden in my hand. This would appear to be about a heroin dealer telling the addict that, A, I have no heroin for you (addict throws his arms out...) or, B, I'm not selling heroin anymore (addict throws his arms out...) Staring at me like I'm driving the nails.. I'm not making you shoot up.. (nails represent syringes) I sell the drugs, but it's your fault you're addicted. Would it pain your more to walk on water than to wear a crown of thorns? = From other posts on this site I believe every reference Chris makes to water is about heroin (that's what it looks like in a syringe), so to walk on water, is to rise above the heroin (the addiction) and to use it. Most dealers only sell to support their own habit. I just wonder if this stuff is written from a 3rd person perspective or from real life experience.. From what I can see, the vast majority of soundgarden songs are about heroin.. I still love it all though.. |
