Melancholic, wistful thoughts of someone. I thought perhaps his wife Una, the line "she doesn't live here anymore", doesn't seem to tie in with that however. Some true words in these lyrics. I think many people do have just "one special friend", "one true love", and reject or "lose everyone else in the world". The opening verse about denying "any other way in the world" also seems accurate. I can closely relate with some of the lyrics in this song. I bought the album 'Wild Mood Swings' this was from and found it to be disappointing. I thought this was the only decent song on it. |

Going out on a Saturday. I actually think this is their, (The jam), best song. For me it evokes a thought that the 'kids' described are under 18, somehow. Despite the fact they are going for a pint. Driving around in cars they would suppose to be late teens as well, but the rest of the lyrics give me a picture of 14 to 17 year olds. 'Capstan non filters', those were the days eh? Solsbury Hill is located above the village of Batheaston, in Somerset. Peter Gabriel has probably climbed to the top at some point, and it has inspired him to write this song. "Though my life was in a rut" could express a yearning to have some success, after his departure from Genesis. I always thought he was at his best between 1973 and 1978, during which time frame Solsbury Hill was released. |
