Peter Gabriel – Here Comes The Flood Lyrics 7 years ago
Interesting. I somehow have the feeling that this lyric is also connected in some way to the book ``The Crysallids`` by John Wyndham. If you red the book you´ll see what I mean.

Just my thoughts on this , but if you think back to ``return of the great giant hogweed`` and connect this with John Wyndhams novel ``day of the triffids``, then (just for fun) look at another novel by j. wydham which has nuclear war and a telepahic new race as their subject... Apart from the possible connection, its a great book.

The question for me here is why the title ``counting out`` time ? Time is valuable like money ie you can count it out ? Any ideas ?

@[TyrantSun:15010] definately a cosmic game being played here. As further proof , look for the insertion of IT in the story text of ``the Lamb``. ``It`` is very carefuly placed throughout.

@[Gezzer53:15006] Yes , this is an interesting Interpretation, especially given the direction gabriels own life would take following this album.

Genesis – Back in N.Y.C. Lyrics 9 years ago
After living with ``the Lamb`` since its release all those years ago, I have only recently listened to it again and given it some deeper thought. It is an incredible piece of work by any standards and holds up today extremely well. The music , concept, story and lyrics all work together to produce a ``musical`` which, for me, is up there with Sondheim.

And there is so much conjecture about meanings etc - the wonders of the internet ! So much love of this album, and very creative responses from fans from all over the place.

My own thoughts revolve around the instrumental which follows ``Back in NYC`` , and more tellingly, its location at the hairy or not so hairy heart of `` the Lamb``.

For me it seems to mark a turning point. The track ``Back in NYC`` seems to boil down to an internal dialogue – ``go the route which will put one back behind bars`` , or ``go another route which will unite one with the rest of humanity `` ( counting out time , carpet crawlers and 32 doors ) as opposed to the lifeless ``grand parade`` view of humanity he has held to date. For me, the heartfelt ``32 doors`` could almost have been the end of Rael´s story – listen to the beautiful final tinkle of Tony Bank´s piano.

This could be the end because, after very many listenings, the second record now runs parallel in my head with the first ( er um , am I making sense doctor ?) , kind of ``looping back`` to this very point. The first record seems to be Rael at the upper level of his mind, while the second deals with his deeper drives . On disc two his ``mum and dad`` ( seemingly absent on the upper level) , for me at least, loom very large from a psychological perspective . My somewhat potty notion is that these figures affect the events on the first record rather than following them in a linear fashion. Outlandish I know, and probably the result of my over active imagination ! But pretentious fun nonetheless.

I really like Tony Bank´s ``drunken organ`` at the end of this song - captures the alcoholic subject matter very well. But how did Banks do this ? Phil Collins is in his element in this closing instrumental passage - very powerful.

In the carpet crawlers Rael is recruited into the human race. On the other side of record 1 he meets only people without lifeblood. Just a thought !

Genesis – I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe) Lyrics 9 years ago
Yes you have a good point there. An alternative life of crime with lots of Armaney in his wardrobe !

I think the lyrics of this early 70´s period were built as ´´poetry´´ to have many meanings all at once - you know, to entertain and keep things interesting (even decades later ). PG´s were in my opinion, very well crafted in this respect and could be a lot more amusing than his contemporaries. That´s what makes them great – they are stuffed full of bits and pieces from all over the place.

My own fire-escape trade related idea simply came from noticing the ``Fireman`` on Foxtrot in close proximity to the ``Farmer``. Interestingly somebody from the distant past once used the term ``fire-escape`` as a description of western religion, but this maybe just a coincidence !

@[EnduringChill:9075] I agree entirely - note : `` you think i´m a tough kid , is that what you
heard ?`` subtext = ``your wrong, I am not `` This song shows him slowly revealing his other half IMHO.

Genesis – The Battle Of Epping Forest Lyrics 9 years ago
The comic voice describing Harald Demure is the narrator´s , not Harald himself . Harald is simply an arty-type, demure ( ie quiet and unassuming) and the only non-violent character in the song. This is interesting if you think about it - the narrator is putting on the camp voice rather like a child making fun of someone. When gabriel is the character (eg the reverend) he sings with the funny voice in the first person. I think this song is lyrically brilliant and, like a lot of PG in this period, not quite what it seems at first. Ponder this notion - the guys in this battle are all real UK characters from history or otherwise . Georgie is footballer george best, billy wright was also a footballer and funnily enough also a historical pirate ! The bethnal green butcher is jack the ripper, sweetmeal sam just might be diarist samuel pepys ( who frequented the bluebell tavern in london ) and liquid len was a lighting guy at rock concerts in the 70´s. That´s as far as I have got to date . Seems to me PG threw a whole lot of ``real people`` into this battle !

Genesis – It Lyrics 9 years ago
Just a thought, but has anyone else noticed - `` look across the mirror, before you choose decide.....it is here , it is now `` One could read this as `` look a cross, the mirror `` in other words religion versus self-examination as the means to enlightenment - its up to you to decide your own path. One of the many themes within the Lamb , I think.

Genesis – I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe) Lyrics 9 years ago
I`m new to this site, so I thought I´de add my take on this catchy little ditty. I have a horrible feeling that this song is about the demise of the central character Jacob ( who according to legend was a Genesis roadie who over- dosed ). I reckon that the chorus is actually sung by the cosmic lawnmower - not by Jacob ( Gabriel´s live intro to the song was `` its knocking-off time for the cosmic lawnmower``) I have the feeling that the lawnmover sharpening his blades, is the grim reaper himself , albeit with modern equipment. Jacob goes through life from a child ``tidy your room`` , to adolescent `` time he was out on his own``, there is a romantic interlude ((lovebirds) and then Mr Farmer ( the God figure from Supper´s Ready ) calls him ( on a Sunday) to ``come up`` to town . The fire escape is Heaven ( the fire is in the other place ). The chorus is also very close in sound to ``I ´mow` what I like...``. And the wardrobe ? Its a wooden box containing the late Jacob. Or a portal to a ``better place`` like the one in Narnia ( hence the Mr (CS) Lewis reference.) A macabre take I know, but not a million miles away from other songs such as ``harald the barrell`` - an equally musically bouncy number with dark lyrical subject matter. The ``supernatural anaethetist`` from the Lamb also features the figure of death.
