Tears for Fears – Standing On The Corner Of The Third World Lyrics 10 years ago
This is such a great song! To me, it seems to be getting across about someone who had been ahead in life, but has recently and slowly been delving into the third world. Of course nothing is mentioned about how this person has ended up in the third world country, but the reason I think this is because the writer sometimes references the others in the country as "them" and sometimes as "us" or "we", acknowledging that they are one with the people of the third world country, yet sometimes separating themselves from them. When the lyrics are "Dreaming I was safe in life" could possibly be the person thinking back to when they were in a secure living situation. I find the lyric "Hungry men will close their minds/Ideas are not their food/Notions fall on stony ground/Where passions are subdued" interesting. Personally I see these lines as comparing first world countries to third world countries. People in first world countries will think up any silly idea that others are willing to buy if it can make them a buck. They keep their minds open to things that could be ideas. In the end, their ideas are virtually what is putting food on the table for them, giving them an opportunity to live a little since they have a chance to do so. However, in this third world country, food is food. They aren't thinking up some scheme to make money, they are working for the necessities, for example, food, water, shelter, etc. I think in the end the writer knows their fate which is, he is dying. He cannot survive in the conditions and knows it is a very real possibility that he could die at anytime, later, tomorrow, a week from today, etc.

Such a wonderful song. Really makes one stop to think about their life from where they stand. I love the intensity of the music at the end. It almost seems as if the narrator in the song is dying right then. Just superb! Fantastic as always Roland!

Tears for Fears – Head Over Heels Lyrics 10 years ago
@[zaWARUDO:8164] Hey, sorry for a reply many years later, but I thought the EXACT same thing as you! When I read Roland's comments on this one, I didn't quite know what he meant. I listened to it and the "gun in your hand" lyric made me think right away about suicide. I thought maybe suicide or, as odd as it sounds, the writer contemplating even killing the girl he is singing about. One thing that made me think that was the part in the video when Roland pulls the comic gun on the librarian and instead of the "BANG" having an exclamation point after it, it had a question mark. Could possibly mean him considering what he should do. Not sure if that was what was intended or not, just something I observed and seemed to fit with possibly what was being said in the lyrics. Either way, Roland is amazing and I think Tears for Fears always mastered having an upbeat tune with lyrics that are actually very gloomy.

Japan – The Other Side Of Life Lyrics 10 years ago
I can't believe nobody has commented on this wonderful piece of music! This one has to be one of my favourite Japan songs. The interpretation I get from the lyrics are two people, a man and woman, who have a very strong, undeniable connection with one another. I see it as a close friendship, not so much a romantic relationship, just two good friends. They were friends when they were younger "Then we were young", however, time has brought them apart from one another. Perhaps they just led different lives, and grew apart from each other. Regardless of why they were apart, the writer has had a hard time moving on from this separation "Some particular places/Remembered so well/Are hard to forget". The girl has moved on, and seems to have had an exciting life "With fantastic stories/You present yourself/In different ways". One could even say she lives on 'The Other Side of Life' from him, the exciting side of life. He knows how she feels and what a great life she is having because they occasionally see each other "These single occasions/We seem to share". When they do meet, the connection is gone "Well it's been a long time/How should I feel?/What can I say?" These meetings they have simply don't feel like they used to, hence the lyrics "Stumble and fall" after mentioning the occasions when they meet. This separation from the writers friend has taken such a toll on him he almost feels dead, and he wishes that "If you could remember to wave/A sign of life my way". That is just how I see this song anyway.

Not sure if that was the intended meaning behind the song, but regardless it makes me love the song even more. This is almost identical to a situation with myself and an old friend of mine. Unfortunately, in that situation I play the role of the writer.
