I believe it's addressing to Satan, as in "Get behind me, Satan" This song takes Devil aspect of Satan figure, that is "the divider" Divided mind produces subject and object, the inner dialogue, the separation of ego from the world. First verse means that's there is no evil or sin in Devil. One of most basic divisions is male and female, with their eternal attraction to each other. Face of a lady is that eternal Other, and love is that attraction. That is "I really need a friend" - someone to talk to, an imaginary listener to one's thought as it is expressed inside one's mind. Chorus: "Get behind me" is quote from Bible about Satan, bending the ear may refer to both internal dialogue and to temptations of Satan. "Not to go back there again" refers to unity, nondualism, the undivided state of the all-present God, the Atman. Reaching out beyond us in out dark times is human desire to seek salvation, shelter for our weak souls. Electric proud brother here is most likely the fallen angel, Lucifer, another name and aspect of Satan. Unlike him, Man didn't entirely lose his way back to salvation through humility. The last verse is very direct expression of desire to return to Nondualism, to the Whole. Each beloved we encounter is just a shadow of the original dividing, and each love is a shadow of that great bond that pulls us back together into original, ideal form of God, desired yet unreachable |
