Well, not sure about this one. Really clutching at straws, but i believe this is describing being in relationship that can't happen. Probably being with someone who is cheating on their other half. But this is how i see it; In the end, it's stronger than I know how to be And I can't just spend my whole lifetime wondering - The relationship is stronger then he originally thought, and he's wondering what it would've been like if they were able to have a relationship that they didn't have to hide anymore. I fell in love with the sound of my heels on the wooden floor I don't want our footsteps to be silent anymore - This is where the perception of cheating plays it's part. He grew to love the rush of the cheating aspect, tip-toeing around to not get caught. But, he's had enough of that now, and wants more out of the fling/affair. He's wanting to not hide what they have anymore. Want them to be in the moment Storm clouds are closing in - Again, reiterating the fact he wants to be together in the open, and in the current moment. Storm clouds are closing shows that he knows it has to come to an end or even an ultimatum for the girl. In the end, it's gone, and there's nothing left to do But I'm still not certain just how I'm gonna feel - This is where the girl chooses the other guy. There's nothing he can do about it now, but although he's ended an affair that is obviously wrong, he still has under-lining feelings for her and he's split between doing the right thing, and what he actually wants. |

@[Factoryrecords:5491] Also, a lot of comments are stating it's a proper love story about 'love and lost' etc etc. Give me a break. As if Alex Turner is that soft (Ok, a few of the songs like this). But this is a song, where the guy is so pitiful, desperate and just plain weird that'll he go searching for any girl that resembles the girl he has lost. So much so, that it drives him to enquire a prostitute for her services. Please don't let slow beat and sweet harmony fool you. |

First things first, the last two paragraphs i believe strongly link to a prostitute. Here's my perception of it; I saw your sister in the cornerstone On the phone to the middle man When I saw that she was on her own I thought she might understand First of all, Cornerstone is the only pub/bar that hasn't got a link towards pirates, which is metaphor for reclaiming something you've lost. And working 'on a corner' is heavily linked to prostitution. The Sister part here meaning it's a spitting image of the girl he's lost. 'On the phone to the middle man' is showing that the prostitute is on the phone to a pimp etc. Middle man is slang for someone who deals with this sort of business (drug dealer for example). Saying that ' i thought she might understand' is basically the guy telling the prostitute of the story of what happened between him and this girl (this is where she probably takes pity). She was close, well you couldn't get much closer She said I'm really not supposed to but yes, You can call me anything you want Probably one of the most potent Alex Turner lyrics, i see this as, the guy is telling the prostitute if he can call her name. Although this is frowned upon (prostitutes don't want guys to become too attached), hearing his sad/depressing/desperate story, she thought she'd make the exception. Just my opinion, but please remember, Alex Turner deliberately write lyrics to conjure many different opinions, greatest example is 'My Propeller'. |
