@[timothy102:45325] I might be personalizing this a bit but I always took it to be that high school football was "a boy's last dream and a man's first loss," meaning that in the eyes of a now older man who is experiencing loss in his current life, he remembers when that last high school football game ended. Being done playing the game (perhaps his dream as a boy) may have been his first loss as he finished high school and became a man. Now, in the throes of loss in his later life he is viewing a high school football game and remembering that he first learned about loss when his high school football career (and childhood) ended.

A simple song that tells the sad story of a poor country boy trying to survive in the city and yearning for his Kentucky home.

I don't think so... not exactly. I think he helped her out. He didn't report that she was prostituting herself so that she wouldn't get into more trouble. Now they are together. It's a simple love song if you look at the lyrics.

Drive-By Truckers – Loaded Gun in the Closet Lyrics 8 years ago
I think all of this stuff about something sinister going on is off base on this one. I understand there is quite a bit of that kind of thing in DBT's work but that is more true in Hood's songs than Cooley's. Cooley's lyrics are often about looking at everyday ordinary things to see the complexities and beauty in the simplicity of it.

This song is all about the beauty of a secure, established, (albeit mundane to most) relationship and the security and peace of mind that it provides.

"He" and "she" in this song are simple people who are more than happy living their simple life. Both crave security, hence their lack of ambition. For her it is the ambition to go out and face the world and for him it is the ambition to get out of the job he cusses about and go do something more with his life.

The loaded gun is symbolic of this security, the security she provides to him by being there and taking care of him everyday and the security he provides to her both by going out and earning them a living as well as providing the loaded gun for her literal protection.

@[uvicstudent:7559] - possibly referring to the susceptibility of North American pronghorns to interrupted migration routes caused by construction of roads in the west, also infections from bacterial and viral diseases wildlife tends to increase with warmer temperatures and mild winters. Take a look at Sonoran Pronghorn and Saiga Antelope. The antelope may be troubled by human progress just as the buffalo were. Maybe it is a stretch but that is where my mind takes this line.

Shouldn't "those 5'8" bastards" be "those 5A bastards"? As in division 5A? It seems unusual to refer to a football team as 5'8" bastards.

Ryan Adams – Oh My Sweet Carolina Lyrics 8 years ago
I tend to think Carolina is a woman and not a place that he is referring to in this song for a couple of reasons. 1. He specifically mentions Kentucky and his family together which would imply that Kentucky is his home state and he misses it. 2. Carolina as divided into North and South in the 18th century. It seems he would refer to North or South if he were referring to a place.

No, I think clearly it is 52% love song, 38% anti-war, and 10% conservation... just kidding... great comment. I agree totally.

Anyone have any thoughts on what "the air smelled like snakes" means? The rest of the song seems to be pretty literal. Is this line referring to something real and specific?

Isn't the second line of the second verse supposed to be "with my fishin' pole and my Field & Stream" referring to the outdoor magazine?

I think there is a whole lot of buried meaning here hidden behind a story of a family reunion. I am sure a lot of it is just my interpretation but I suspect McMurtry had a second meaning in mind concerning just about every line of this one.

@[jestering:5588] No, jfoxx is right, he definitely took the shot, hence the lines:

"I let out my breath" - a common practice immediately before pulling the trigger, aids in accuracy
"I couple with death" - he embraced the act of killing

Nice... I had the same thought... the first "picture", the one in his pocket, being a literal picture and the second "a picture of me" meaning a metaphorical version of himself at another time, when he was different.

Drive-By Truckers – Little Pony and the Great Big Horse Lyrics 8 years ago
Little pony and great big horse went out in a great big trot
Great big horse could trot real fast, little pony he could not.

When we first have kids they slow our lives down... they can feel like a burden.

Great big horse could run so fast for so much of his great big life,
Great big world he was runnin' in was getting smaller all the time.

Then soon you realize that it's nice to slow your life down a bit...

But, little pony still saw the great big world just like it was,
Big and funny, lookin', lookin' through big horse's dust.

You start to see some of the wonder in the world again, as a child does... something you often forget to do in the fast-paced world of adults..

When little pony caught great big horse he said "what is this I see?"
Great big horse said "I don't know, slow down you, follow me."

At some point you realize your kids are growing up so fast... they are going to pass you up soon... you are not sure you are ready for that... you have more teach them before they go off on their own...

Great big horse said "over there's a hill I used to climb."
He took little pony up to the top and they looked down at the lights.

As your child becomes in adult you see some of the challenges and experiences they are facing and start to share some of your experiences to help guide them...

Great big horse said "I ain't seen these lights in so dang long,
I'm sure glad that they're still here, I'd hate it if they's gone."

You some of those adolescent experiences your kid is having and realize there are some things you have left behind in adulthood that you still appreciate...

Little pony snorted and jumped strait up into the air,
Great big horse said "settle down" even though he did not care.

You preach to your kids to approach adulthood with caution and maturity... even though you know sometimes they will not...

Climbin' all those hills made little pony's legs so strong,
He could get to the top 'fore the great big horse knew what was going on..

Before you know it your kid is mentally and physically superior to you... they are approaching adulthood and their lives are busier than you can keep up with anymore...

Great big horse he blinked his great big brown eyes once or twice.
By the time he blinked and saw again, little pony was out of sight.

Before you realize it... in the blink of an eye your child is grown and gone and you are not a huge part of their life anymore...

Little pony and great big horse went out in a great big trot.
Great big horse laid down to rest little pony he did not.

Eventually you die... your child lives on granting you a bit of immortality.

Drive-By Truckers – Zip City Lyrics 8 years ago
@[WeR138:5366] Hmmmmm... interesting because I love both songs. But I feel The River is about the bittersweet acceptance of how choices made as a kid got a 30 or 40 something man to where he is in his life. Zip City is about a kid who refuses to go down the road that the guy in The River has gone down.

Anyone have any thoughts on the "can't get the red stains off of my socks line"? The obvious thought is the red clay referenced earlier in the song has stained his socks but I feel that there is more to it than that. Also "behind the trailer my dessert"... is that the red clay or the 14 yr old girl?

Drive-By Truckers – The Righteous Path Lyrics 8 years ago
I think it is one man, speaking about his own life and how he has everything that an American man in his 30's is supposed to want and yet he feels like he struggles everyday to keep it all together. He is comparing himself to his friend from back in high school who made all of the wrong decisions, is viewed as failure at life by society in general, and basically has nothing. The lyrics detail the differences in their lives and lifestyles and similarities in the internal struggles that they face each day regardless of their respective lots in life.

What appears to be a character story on the surface is actually a commentary on the life of typical American men in their 30's.
