Paul Westerberg – Love Untold Lyrics 7 years ago
Agreed with others about the topic of this song. A few lines that are important that no one has brought up:

"They were going to meet on a Rocky Mountain Street..." is the start of the verse about excitement, fantasy, and unrealistic expectations. The following verse is talking about anticipation and the routine things we have all experienced before meeting someone who they are interested in.

"They were going to meet on a crummy little street..." is the start where the character comes to face reality that he still hasn't found his true love and this date won't amount to anything. The "spark" that the character in the first verse was hoping for, "never came to be."

However, the most important part of the song is when the fadeout starts and it he changes, "They were going to meet..." into, "We were going to meet..." which indicates that we have all had thoughts about meeting someone, sweeping them off their feet and living happily-ever after, which is obviously unrealistic.

@[whatchamacallme:6015] Tweedy will do them in his acoustic sets every so often, but I haven't heard Wilco do a full band Tupelo song since the 90s

Wilco – How To Fight Loneliness Lyrics 8 years ago
@[trasta:5571] it's saying people will associate you with whatever you make them believe. so, if you are bob pretending to be happy, you'll be known as "bob, the happy guy" ... no matter what the situation, how you react will be how you're remembered.

Elvis Costello – You Tripped at Every Step Lyrics 8 years ago
There is something about drinking going on in this song... tripping at every step of the 12 steps of AA.

"It's not just the lipstick drawn on crooked" - she's so drunk she can't put her makeup on correctly

"Only you drank that potion, and went out of control" - drank too much

"In another world of gin and cigarettes" - obvious, the gin is a type of booze

Who is the cartoon mouse that he is referring to? Mickey mouse? i don't get that part..

Elvis Costello – 13 Steps Lead Down Lyrics 8 years ago
Agreed it has something to do with AA.

Paper and glue are used to try to construct destroyed lives back together and scissors represent booze that's shredding them apart.

He says, "13 steps leads down" 12 times in the song, to represent the 12 steps. The 13th step is relapse.

Elvis Costello – Watching the Detectives Lyrics 8 years ago
It's written as if someone is watching a movie about a murder. I'm pretty sure it's a movie about a guy's infidelity and cheating on his wife. Then, the wife finds out and kills the husband and the girl he was cheating with.

She's filing her nails while they're dragging the lake" means the girls fingers are dragging on the ground as someone dumps her body into a lake.

Then, the 2nd part of the song, Elvis is putting himself in the movie, and he becomes the killer. It changes in the last verse that starts, "You think you're alone until you realize you're in it."

i also love how the last chorus changes to the first person.

"Oh, he's so cute" changes to, "Don't get cute."
"They beat him up until the teardrops start" changes to, "I get so angry when the teardrops start."
