Squeeze – Annie Get Your Gun Lyrics 4 years ago
I may be wrong, since Chris Difford claims not to know what the song was about, but to me it reads as being about the morning after pill or about an abortion. "Annie", a male singer's girlfriend, gets the medical results she wants after having found out via test she was pregnant. She decides to rid herself of the burden, and the singer (Glenn Tilbrook probably) reacts. Phrase words like "leaking", "medical", phrases like "don't pull the trigger" and "she wants drinks for everyone" strongly suggest a probably Seventies abortion as the storyline. Glenn is ambivalent because it's "unexpected" and "shoots that singer". Eliminates him and his seed.

Again, I may be wrong, but that's what it feels like.

Elton John – Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Lyrics 6 years ago
Bisexual boy Bernie Taupin temporarily fed up with Reginald Dwight's flamboyant antics and the overall excesses of the gay life, and threatening to run away home. That's what it is and that's all it is. Gayness completely nailed, only things missing and not mentioned were poppers and decorative wall masks.

Steely Dan – Jack of Speed Lyrics 10 years ago
@[thedurable1:4466] Nailed. Former meth user here, hooked for its weight loss and aggression properties. Sadly she delivers on both, which is how she hooks you. I'm clean now but this song absolutely nails it. Fagen's not mincing words in this one. Meth does make you think you're productive at first, and tricks you by making you the antisocial person scared of other people suddenly social and no longer scared; but there is a heavy price. God help the ones who have the addiction gene because they can't hear their brain's and body's alarms warning them something's seriously wrong, and escape Tina early. I do not posses the gene and heard the alarms and got out.

Today I can see how Tina could have seduced me. I'm sad I have to do without now and can't be as slickly social anymore, and I mourn it's not QUITE as easy to stay stick thin without her (though she stays in your system forever and you will eat less after having used her awhile - ED folks stay away, do not see this as an endorsement), but rather that than become her drooling slave hiding behind lowered blinds, shut curtains and paranoia. When Fagen sings "He's changed - in a thousand little ways, he's changed" BOY does he ever nail it. You do not realize how drastically and fully crystal changes you unless you're lacking the addiction gene and can keep your sanity and objectivity afterward, and until you're miles away from the shit.

Trust me, the Dan, despite being unrepentant cokeheads both, nailed speed on this song.

Envious perhaps because our high is 3x better and costs 10x less? :D

@[milhous451:4461] Metal is also Don's dry smartaleck flipped bird to the heavy metal listeners who make up a disproportionate amount of meth users. But not all. I was one and am a jazz fan and Dan head.

@[fuzzbox22:4460]

Verse you had better pay close fucking attention to:

"You maybe got lucky for a few good years
But there's no way back from there to here"

No further commentary needed on that one. Fagen is preaching truth on it.

Final note here: Donald uses coke. If he, a coke user, is warning you not to touch meth, perhaps the wise among you HAD BETTER PAY ATTENTION.

Tina makes coke feel like baby powder.

BEWARE AND STAY AWAY

That's what this song means
The End

As a former meth user, I can confirm Jack of Speed is about a woman dating a crystal user, and it's one of Steely Dan's clearest and most obvious drug use songs. I get chills listening to the final chorus, where Fagen warns the girl, "He'll be calling out your name... don't stop." Ironic a cokehead like him criticizing us - but oh well. Here's the deal:

I was lucky in that I don't possess the addiction gene and was able to quit meth cold turkey the moment I noticed it was buying up a little too much of my time and self-control. Haven't touched it in four months and absolutely clean so far, as well as frankly uninterested. Having danced with this particular devil, though, I do want to contribute the opinion that Donald Fagen must have been in close observation of a meth user while composing this single, because his statements and conclusions are absolutely 100 percent spot-on.

I've heard here and there that "God invented meth users to teach cocaine users a much needed lesson", and it seems valid. Meth is Better Coke with a Stronger Effect for Far Less Money, which at the onset makes meth users seem pennywise and smarter. Not true. The substance is the devil - and if you don't lack the gene, it WILL destroy you. Fagen's commentary is vague but smart, and if you listen to him, you'll be wise. Even if you're using, take his advice given to the nameless girl in the song and run, and run fast, from this drug.

Crystal meth delivers every high coke promises, and 90 times cheaper and easier. That's the danger. Soon Tina will control every decision you make. I am the one member of my family who, for whatever genetic reasons, didn't inherit the addiction gene. I was able to drop it in a single hour and walk away.

YOU WILL NOT BE THAT LUCKY.

Take the song's advice. This drug will transform you into a monster. Walk away.

Walk away NOW.

Signed,
A Steely Dan Fan who yes danced with this devil
