@[TimMiltz:20650] Regarding Steve Miller's Jungle Love I actually DO think he wrote the song TO a jelly fish- 'met you on somebodies Island' - STING ? written on the back of skin - oh yeah - AND the natives call jelly fish stings Jungle Love. Ok so I made that part up but don't believe EVERYTHING you read HOWEVER, this song HAS a choo choo in it - train ? I'm going with underground railroad. Grandfathers clothes ? eh - still carrying the identity the grandfather had - and let's face it Lincoln was still pro slavery- he just didn't want the South to have slaves to have any power - Lincoln not ONLY promoted slavery in the North - he OPENLY stated blacks should have MOST rights, but no the right to vote etc, in addition Lincoln was offering $100 per person to leave the US to Liberia. Lincoln was NO NO NICE GUY - perhaps the lesser of two evils but listen to Lincoln's speeches and debates he didn't believe blacks should have ALL the same rights- no right to run for office for example. I don't like Lincoln on that PARTIAL dignity he fails to bring ALL people. PLUS his $100 a person LATE NIGHT get on the boat and get out of town - cash pain once we leave dock DEAL - was pretty shifty - and now look at Liberia. United States should donate 500 BILLION dollars to FIX Liberia if you ask me- and the UK ? 500 BILLION to fix Sierra Leone - but hey - people like Dick Cheney LOVE to REWRITE history- and somehow Lincoln managed to be something he wasn't. This song is about a choo choo - perceived freedom - and uncertainty if the trade for the North was ANY better of a deal. Colder, better money but STILL treated as LESS than anyone else- and to think the MODERN DAY Republicans ACTUALLY ROOT from this HOLE called The North that somehow THOUGHT treating people based on skin color DIFFERENT - was justifiable - even TO THIS DAY this nightmare lives on. I HAVE been to the mountain and the VIEW IS FANTASTIC - you can see for miles and miles and I really need to get some sleep- age 49 ? up 30 hours ? this can't be good :) |

This song popped in my head the other evening. It somewhat was catalyst for me to think in shock - oh my - this song is about adoption- they're giving up their child. However reading the lyrics today, twice, I am thinking this is POV of an African American slave family, and they are heading north either pre or post abolition - likely post. Baltimore IS a big part of Byrne's home I think - I remember that line about what's that smell- it's ONLY the river and I did smell that river one day but ANYWAY - I have a hunch Baltimore here is a clue - this family is heading North POSSIBLY the underground railroad - first lines 'conductor says' - certainly plants train in my view. So that's my take- a song about a former slave family moving north to be free. Eh- I also thought Steve Miller's Jungle Love was about 'Jelly Fish Island' this island in the Pacific, that one was a FAR FAR reach but they DO use mango's to treat the stings from this rare lake where millions of Jelly Fish exist, and there IS that line about I brought you a crate of mango's. Again FAR REACH on Jungle Love, LIKELY far reach on this one. HOWEVER Jelly Fish Island is a very neat place- and there IS A tide such that all the jelly fish come in and out - I even researched to see if Steve Miller visited Jelly Fish Island ! |

I'd say on first review Sounds an affair One person - TWO alone - YET? Three together in this mix. The song starts off arpeggio on A Minor for god sakes Let's take consideration on that alone. It's A Minor - C Major - G Major - D Major On the plus side I LOVE anything that starts on the second of the scale - however - that is USUALLY Reserved for major - and MANY AMAZING songs START on the Major second - this song - starts on the minor second. think about it. It's an affair and how it destroys BOTH sides now - enough on Judy THANKFULLY it's a VERY SHORT piece. PAINFULLY SWEET in melody and harmony. confusing to anyone on the outside. |

I hear Jesus and Elvis are the top winners post mortem in sales, I think Elvis was 119 million last year. They don't let ya go even after yer gone.... daaaaayem... Like Phil Collins said when he moved to Switzerland: "Drumming destroyed my body, the music recording industry is corrupt - leave me alone" Of course, I don't think 'burning' when I think Swiss Alps either. The paradox is Phil Collins couldn't write a song about how COOL it is to not be writing songs anymore. |

POSSIBLE allegory to Elvis here ! Regarding the B sides reference. heh- I'm going LONG on saying Elvis burned himself out being used to pimp B side records, but Elvis for one - did burn and burn out- the drugs killed him. I never got into Elvis that much, but what a nightmare- EVERYONE wanted a piece of him, he had NO privacy in the end, no peace. Well in THE end, sure. |

Well let's see... The first two verses being out of Jack Kerouac's On The Road? I'd argue this song is about the trade off you make when you tour. No doubt anyone that tours- IS burning- paying a price for it. No time for B-sides... WE ON TOUR BABY. NO STUDIO TIME HERE. Could be wrong, but in that the first two verses are FROM "On The Road"? Gee - how much of a hint does one need? I think On The Road would have worked for this piece. Tim Miltz |
