Elton John – Writing Lyrics 11 months ago
@[rumi:47140] It goes without saying it's an autobiographical song about Elton and Bernie. The lyrics suggest that they worked very hard on writing songs, using entire weekends to write, they didn't dawdle and the line "We could stretch our legs if we'd half a mind" simply suggests that they should have taken more time to relax or take breaks while writing but they elected not to.

Willie Nelson – Pancho And Lefty Lyrics 6 years ago
The first two verses of the song are the words of Lefty. Lefty and his friend Pancho set out to live the life of a bandit, a dream of Pancho's. In time Lefty felt Pancho grew cold, hard, ruthless and cruel (skin like iron, breath like kerosene). Lefty felt he had enough of Pancho and what he had become and decided to cut a deal with the Federales by setting him up for capture in exchange for money. Lefty split for Ohio the day Pancho was captured and hung. The question is posed in the song how Lefty could have afforded to get to Ohio and that "nobody knows." Lefty got the money from the Federales in exchange for the location and capture of Pancho. The Federales say they could have had Pancho any day but the reality is they couldn't catch him and it took Lefty's help to get him but they don't want to admit that because it would make the Federales seem inept in their job and it would also expose Lefty of his betrayal if they revealed the deal. Lefty reportedly lived the rest of his life on the road, living in cheap hotels and bearing some regret over cutting a deal and betraying his friend that left a bitter taste in his mouth. But, because of the way Pancho had become he felt that's what he had to do. The Federales would never reveal the deal and is referenced at the end "a few gray Federales say..."

Steely Dan – What A Shame About Me Lyrics 9 years ago
I'm a little surprised that nobody has caught on to the fact that the second chorus is sung by Franny. It's Franny that is saying it was just a rumor about her being the next big thing and that she just got out of rehab. The narrator sings the first chorus and Franny sings the second. The song is cleverly summed up by the final two lines which is "it's a shame about me" repeated twice, inferring that it's a shame about BOTH of them. The "ghost" reference by the narrator is merely a reference that he is all but a semblance of what he once was, just as she is as well. The song is a story about two lives that took very different paths but in the end resulted in being equally unhappy. - Jim Cuccarro
