Elton John – Candle In The Wind Lyrics

This used to be one of my favorites, but I haven't been able to listen to this song since October 27, 2009. On that morning I heard it on the radio and for some reason the lyrics about Marilyn being found in the nude after she died really stood out for me. Hours later, I had a call from my Mother's landlord saying that he found Mama dead in her apartment! Like Marilyn, Mama was nude at the time. Since then, I turn the radio off when this song comes on. It just brings back too many bad memories.

The J. Geils Band – Centerfold Lyrics

Hate to be a "Debbie Downer" here, but this is one of the few 80s songs that I don't like. The tune is okay, but as a woman I don't relate to the lyrics at all. This song is definitely more of a guy thing. Or maybe not. I read a tweet from a guy on Twitter this morning who also dislikes this song. The tweet said "Oi! J Geils Band! Your angel can do what she wants with her body. Stop objectifying her you selfish, whiny butt-hurt prick." Despite my dislike of the song, I'm curious about how the J. Geils Band came up with the lyrics. Maybe one of them really did have a crush on a girl who later appeared in a centerfold. Who knows, maybe this happened to one of their groupies.

R.E.M. – Orange Crush Lyrics

This song is about the herbicide known as "Agent Orange" that was used in Vietnam. Like so many other aspects of the Vietnam War, and really, military life in general, both the civilian public as well as the military soldiers were lied to about this. When I was in the Air Force in the 1980s, I remember hearing Vietnam vets talking about the health issues they experienced after being exposed to this stuff. To add insult to injury, the military denied that these vets had anything to do with Agent Orange when they tried to get medical treatment through the Veterans Administration (VA). This is where I came into the story - I would make copies of their records (usually performance evaluations) showing that yes indeed, they did handle Agent Orange, usually every day they were in Vietnam. Hope that my copies proved that the vets had a case. God knows our veterans have done so much, it breaks my heart to see them lied to and stabbed in the back!

Madonna – Oh Father Lyrics

@[that_sullen_girl:2000] - I've always thought that I could have written this song, if Madonna hadn't done it first. My late Father was not physically abusive, but he was often mentally cruel. I really don't think Dad intentionally meant to be mean, but he was brought up by an abusive man and did not know any better. The lines in the song that go "You didn't mean to be cruel/Somebody hurt you too" never fail to break my heart, as they hit real close to home.

John Mayer – Heartbreak Warfare Lyrics

I read somewhere that this song is about the end of his relationship with Jennifer Aniston. Supposedly, the lines "Drop his name/Push it in and twist the knife again" are about her relationship with Justin Theroux. I liked Jennifer Aniston when she was on Friends, but it doesn't surprise me that she might be someone who kisses and tells. One person above says that the line is about Brad Pitt. Could be. I did get really sick of hearing about Jennifer and Brad breaking up back in the day - the tabloids went on and on about this subject. Granted, the news media does over-hype stuff like this - any time two stars get together or split up, it's big news. But I wonder if Jennifer had something to do with all the publicity. I think that she spent more time talking to reporters about Brad than any of her movies. If she had been smart, she would have discussed the films in more detail. A lot of them have bombed at the box office.
