The Strokes – Last Nite Lyrics | 10 years ago |
it's about premature ejaculation and/or impotence |
Stone Temple Pilots – Black Heart Lyrics | 10 years ago |
This song is about the mind and thought process of a serial killer. If you really searched for a metaphor in this song, you could make a case for it being about a guy who's a major player ("ladykiller") but that's a big stretch. |
Fiona Apple – Across the Universe (The Beatles cover) Lyrics | 21 years ago |
I am not a Fiona Apple fan, and I always like the original version of a song better. HOWEVER, her version blows the Beatles' version away. This is such a soothing song to listen to her sing...when you listen to John Lennon sing it, it sounds like someone has been inhaling helium which grates on my nerves. As far as the meaning of "Jai Guru Deva Om", I found the following on several websites: "All together it means, "I give thanks (victory) (salutation) to Guru Dev (or heavenly teacher), om" I also found this: "Jai Guru Deva Om" refers to that inner, living God within every person. Jai = "Hail" or "Praise," Guru = "knowledge-giver" but in this frame of reference it means "the giver of the Ultimate Knowledge" (which is that realization of God), Deva = "God," and Om is a holy word because it symbolizes the first sound of the universe. This relates to the entire song Across the Universe because this song is about meditation - specifically the Hindu method of meditation upon the inner, living God (which is directly related to the art of yoga). "Across the Universe" refers to the universe of the inner being. Through their studies during their sojourn in India, the Beatles deeply assimilated the spiritual philosophies that have been the essence of Indian culture for 5000 years. This assimilation is reflected in their song." The latter seems to do a good job of explaining the song's meaning. Chelsea, that is sooooo sad about your friend, but it is very touching and I'm glad this song has such a special meaning for you to remember and honor your friend. |
The Lemonheads – Into Your Arms Lyrics | 21 years ago |
A bit egocentric and sensitive are we, Lorna?? I hate to burst your bubble by breaking this to you, but my original post wasn't even directed at you. I posted my thoughts on what the song was about, stating that it was simple and need not be overanalyzed for any deep hidden meaning. I didn't even read your original post before today. Having read it, your reply was brief and to the point, just like the song. Good job. Feel better now?? |
10,000 Maniacs – Cherry Tree Lyrics | 21 years ago |
It's about an illiterate person who wants to learn to read. The person is scared to do it and so embarrassed that they are holding themselves back, but if they can muster up the courage to learn, they will never take that ability for granted. |
10,000 Maniacs – You Happy Puppet Lyrics | 21 years ago |
This is about someone who is so dumb and devoid of thought, he lets others determine his life and actions, and does so willingly. The observer is wondering, "how did you allow yourself to be so brainwashed that you can't function without the direction of others...?" |
10,000 Maniacs – What's The Matter Here? Lyrics | 21 years ago |
At first, knowing how liberal Natalie Merchant is, I thought this was an overblown statement of spanking and calling it child abuse...however, when you get to the line about "instead of love you've given him these cuts and sores that won't heal with time or with age"...i start to think it is about a truly abusive parent, who beats the kid so bad he gets not only cuts and bruises, but emotional scars that will last forever. |
10,000 Maniacs – Lilydale Lyrics | 21 years ago |
It's about a walk through a cemetery; a person who finds it a peaceful place to visit. |
10,000 Maniacs – Don't Talk Lyrics | 21 years ago |
It is about a woman in love with an alcoholic who is drunk at the moment. She is trying to go to sleep and avoid confrontation with him, and trying to protect herself from falling for his empty promises about giving up drinking, as well as avoiding being a target for his verbal abuse. Basically, she's trying to tune him out while he's drunk, and will talk with him later when he's sobered up. |
Natalie Merchant – These Are The Days Lyrics | 21 years ago |
The first 10,000 Maniacs song I ever heard...and loved it immediately. It's about loving and appreciating life and all its glory, and how every day is a miracle if you let it be and can see life that way. One of the many great songs written by 10,000 Maniacs. |
Natalie Merchant – Where I Go Lyrics | 21 years ago |
One of the few songs that leaves little room for interpretation...it's meaning is clear as can be. I know a river that fits this song's meaning. It is the Crystal River as it runs through a little town in Western Colorado called Redstone. In this little mountain town of 92 people (according to the sign last time I was there in 1997) that sits along the river, you can walk out of the door to any cottage or business in town, and hear the cool rushing water sound. The town is an old mining town with few businesses...a hotel, a couple of restaurants, and a few small businesses...it is about as peaceful a setting as you could find. And to sit at some of the picnic tables by the river, and listen to the waters rushing by, the stresses of the world are just gone. I loved this song the first time I heard it, and it made me think of the Crystal River in Redstone, CO...and it still makes me think of it today. |
Natalie Merchant – Cowboy Romance Lyrics | 21 years ago |
I love this song, although it is really about 2 pathetic white trash people from the old West. He's a drifter, and she's a tramp...add alcohol into the mix, and they are in love, or so they think...under the influence of alcohol, he says he might take her with him, and she wants to go too...she says she'll be all his if he takes her with him, and asks if he can be happy drifting, but drifting with her as company. Then, when he wakes up and realizes where he is and sees her as she really is (without the beer goggles on), takes off and leaves her behind...it's so realistic and pathetic, but Natalie sings it so well, it is really a beautiful song. |
Concrete Blonde – Joey Lyrics | 21 years ago |
Turtlefreak, that's an interesting take. However, I think it is about a man and a woman who can't seem to make their relationship work because they've both been hurt in the past. The song takes place after a recent fight where they ended their relationship, and she's had a little time to think about what she's losing and doens't want to lose him. "Detours, fences...i get defensive"...she is afraid to get her, so she backs off the relationship at times. He's been hurt in the past too, and still hasn't resolved all his issues."I know you've heard it all before, so I don't say it anymore I just stand by and let you fight your secret war" is about him not letting go of his past which is keeping him from a future with her. "But if I seem to be confused, I didn't mean to be with you And when you said I scared you Well I guess you scared me too"...both of them scare each other off because of their pasts. "But we got lucky once before, And I don't want to close the door" meaning that they have meshed together well at times, and she doesn't want it to be over. I think the whole reference to the drunk and passed out thing is just an indicator that it was a recent fight, and he's probably out drinking his sorrows away. "But if it's love you're looking for then I can give a little more And if you're somewhere drunk and passed out on the floor Oh Joey, I'm not angry anymore"...she's saying that if he wants to be involved with her, she wants him too, and will give more of herself to make it work. She got angry and said some things she didn't mean, and I'm sure he did too...she knows it was a mistake and wants to work it out, and hopes he does too. At least, that's my thoughts on it...and I could well be wrong. |
Coldplay – In My Place Lyrics | 21 years ago |
Ioracle, I really like your take...not one I would have thought of...I've seen other posts make reference to the lyrics saying it's about a person wanting another person to fall in love with them, and using the justification that the lines say "how long must you wait for him"...that is not the lyric...it is "how long must you wait for IT"...last time I checked, him doesn't have the letter T in it... There are typos in the lyrics posted above. Here are the corrected lyrics: In my place, in my place, Were lines that I couldn't change, I was lost, oh yeah. I was lost, I was lost, Crossed lines I shouldn't have crossed, I was lost, oh yeah. Yeah, how long must you wait for IT? Yeah, how long must you pay for IT? Yeah, how long must you wait for IT? I was scared, I was scared, Tired and underprepared, But I wait for IT. If you go, if you go, Leave me DOWN HERE on my own, Well I wait for you. Yeah Yeah, how long must you wait for it? Yeah, how long must you pay for it? Yeah, how long must you wait for it...FOR IT? Sing it Please, please, please, Come back come sing to me, To me, me. Come on and sing it out now, now Come on and sing it out To me, me Come back come sing it In my place, in my place, Were lines that I couldn't change, I was lost, oh yeah. Oh yeah. Anyways, this board is really cool because we all get to post our take on song meanings...but the important thing to remember, is that while a songwriter might have a particular take on a song when he/she writes the lyrics, a song's meaning is different for everybody. Simply put, whatever it means to you, that's what it is about. The images a song invokes in your mind is what the song is about to you. My personal feeling is the song's lyrics are vague and generic because it was intended to be about more than one potential cause for regret...a mistake made in relationship, and regretting it wanting the person to come back...or it could be about life itself, and mistakes made that have sent this person down the wrong path. It could even be about a person who was in an accident and is now in a coma, and knows that the life support is going to be cut off and he will die...wanting the family members to come back and talk or sing to him to keep trying to bring him back...unlikely, but possible. gingerphish2002, you shouldn't get used to it...move on to someone who appreciates you and won't take you for granted. |
Tonic – Sugar Lyrics | 21 years ago |
Not much to analyze here...the song is just a good old-fashioned love song, that you can listen to over and over again... What's funny is that we all have different parts we like; mine is: "You're looking like you need a rescue Underneath the southern moonlight Where only I can find you..." AND "I could give a thousand reasons I could give a thousand lives I know I would always meet you Underneath a summer sky So come on tell me love is glory Come on tell me love is real Show me what your heart is made of Show me what I need to feel" I mean, WOW...there is nothing that could be done to improve this song...it was written and performed to perfection. |
Guns N' Roses – Civil War Lyrics | 21 years ago |
I think the meaning is pretty clear...an anti-war song, directed especially at, as the name states, civil wars. I find this all to ironic, since Axl Rose has done everything from bash a female neighbor over the head with a bottle, to co-writing an original G N' R song, "One In A Million" off the G n' R Lies CD, where the lyrics read: "Police and Niggers, that's right...get out of my way..."?? Does anyone find this hyporcrisy as ironic as I do??? Doesn't this (these statements) suggest that they contribute to the social displacement (racism, hatred, separatist ideas) that leads to civil wars? How hypocritical!!! Not to mention, these guys have had all sorts of problems with drug abuse. So what the message behind this song says to me is this: "we've screwed up our lives on drugs, and we preach lyrics about hating law enforcement and minorities, but take our advice on how to shape your views"...I don't think so. |
Genesis – Home By The Sea Lyrics | 21 years ago |
In the absence of a better explanation, I think this song is about a schizophrenic having a self-aware moment and trying to silence the voices in his head, only to hear the voices say more or less "we're here to stay and you're not going to get rid of us..." I base this on the lyrics "Sit down, sit down, 'cause you won't get away for the rest of your days, sit down...as we relive our lives in what we tell you...let us relive our lives in what we tell you". It's like the voices are saying, don't try to silence us, let us relive our lives in your head, listen to what we say". The images the song evokes in me makes me think of the movie "A BEAUTIFUL MIND" with Russell Crowe, and his character's struggle to quiet the voices and people he saw and heard. Perhaps the character in the song is in a mental institution, The Home By The Sea. In the first part of the song, the chorus goes, "Help me someone, let me out of here...then out of the dark was suddenly heard...welcome to the Home by the Sea". The man is saying to the voices that he doesn't want to hear the voices anymore, and to his displeasure a voice says "welcome to the home by the sea". The lyrics "Images of sorrow, pictures of delight...things that go to make up a life...endless days of summer longer nights of gloom...waiting for the morning light... scenes of unimportance, photos in a frame...things that go to make up a life " seems to show the variety of emotions and types of "personalities" of the different voices/people the schizophrenic sees. But, one alternate theory came to mind, although I doubt that it is correct; the song could possibly be about HELL and what a man might see in HELL..."shadows but no substance, in the shape of men, round and down and sideways they go, adrift without direction, eyes that hold despair, then as one they sign and they moan". I doubt the latter theory is correct, because the title doesn't make much sense then. Home by the Sea in Hell? Unless it's an obscure reference to the Lake of Fire, I don't see the Hell theory as plausible. What do you think? |
The Lemonheads – Into Your Arms Lyrics | 21 years ago |
This song doesn't have any deep meaning behind it, it's pretty straight forward. Just a good simple song to enjoy. Don't overanalyze it. |
Dishwalla – Somewhere in the Middle Lyrics | 21 years ago |
that should say above: "but WHO says SHE DUMPED HIM?" |
Dishwalla – Somewhere in the Middle Lyrics | 21 years ago |
charredpunk raises an interesting question, but there's one flaw with the theory...if he's trying to get her drunk, why did SHE buy the drinks? "so I asked you if you'd join me for a single last call drink so YOU turned and BOUGHT US 2 and you didn't even blink"... I agree with most of the above assessments that it is a post break-up song; but says who SHE DUMPED HIM? An alternate theory on this song's meaning: HE DUMPED HER BECAUSE SHE IS A DRUNK, and that's not how he wants to live his life. He loves her and wants to be with her, but at the same time he knows she’s bad for him and is trying to do the logical thing. (“well I find it hard I always tried to find the sane life but I don't like the way things are”). He runs into her at the bar, and she starts a fight with him, presumably because he dumped her and didn’t approve of her drinking. But, with a few drinks in his system, he's feeling a little lonely, lustful and uninhibited. He gives in to his feelings for her and asks her for a last call drink...which SHE eagerly buys without hesitation. She wants him drunk so he'll leave her alone about her drinking and get him to accept her alcoholism and just be with her because he wants to. He obviously loves her, and sees the things in her that are good, especially her looks. But he knows she's bad for him ("had the look that of an angel..such a bad disguise") because she's a drunk ("you..bought us 2 and didn't even blink") When he's drunk, he gives into the side that wants to be with her, but he's trying to cut her loose. He knows he’ll regret this later; he's trying to let her go, but he still wants to be with her at the same time. He's wrestling with doing what's right and what's wrong, and can’t commit to making the choice. And that’s why he’s “somewhere in the middle…” Just a thought to throw out there…. |
The Cowboy Junkies – Cowboy Junkies Lament Lyrics | 21 years ago |
This song may be the best cowboy junkies song of all...what does it mean? Well, the short version is this: a lamentation is an audible expression of grief or sorrow; reading through the lyrics, someone is on trial and is going to be convicted and sentenced to death, but they don't want to die/they don't want to go. They go back and forth between just being ready to die, and wanting to live. Their ability to dream is giving them hope they might just live after all... That's the best I can come up with on short notice. |
